what sort of weirdo enlists in the marines after graduating from Harvard

Either some kind of psychopath or adrenaline junkie.

I personally know people who left careers as lawyers/phd's/etc to do a few years in the military to jump out of planes and shoot stuff. And then went right back to whatever they were doing before.

I'm willing to bet we have fusion reactor designs that are similarly situated and capitalism is stopping us from The Good poo poo

hell forget fusion, we've got a bunch of good fission designs that could be done Right Now but have been pushed back against by fossil fuel interests

also that paper on the computation problem is a good read, sure a million variables isn't enough but consider the datasets google and Facebook work with, and even a trillion variable system wouldn't be terribly difficult

They were working on it for a few years, Moderna and BioNtech both had a ton of open projects. The issue is the capital isn't really there when it's a vaccine that'll maybe work on a virus that's not of particular note in the US, or when it's one of a million different cancer therapies, so things just move slowly. These companies were also diversified in doing poo poo like gene therapy, which is riskier but has a more obvious payoff.

A year from virus ID to functional vaccine is unheard of and can only happen with incredible investment.

The CIA pretended to vaccinate children against polio in order to pretend to sequence their genes to look for bin Laden in order to hide the fact that Pakistan handed him over in 2006, so it's absolutely precedented.

It's so incredible, surely the polio vaccine is dirt cheap being that it's patent-free that they could just have used the actual vaccine instead of saline solution and it wouldn't have cost barely anything more.

I can't overstate how much we suck at funding science worldwide, the US is among the best and we're still trash. Academics are fighting for scraps and industry has to make products that sell. We take people who want to cure a neglected disease and have the ability to do so and force them out so they end up on a project to make a better dick pill or become a McKinsey consultant
