So I overheard some people arguing over "good" and "bad" Electric Wizard albums today, but I didn't catch which was what. I'm not familiar with the band much at all outside of Dopethrone, which rules. Are there any generally agreed upon good or bad parts of their discography?

Come My Fanatics, the self-titled album and Witchcult Today are generally considered highlights. We Live and Let Us Prey have mixed responses. They’ve been seeing diminishing returns with their last few, although Wizard Bloody Wizard is the only one I outright think is subpar.

Well put. Dunwich may be the most “accessible” EW track, and it still fucks.

I think some people draw a line in the sand between the original lineup stuff (and dont forget Supercoven) and the four-piece revolving door of bandmates era. As mentioned, Witchcult is the best of the later stuff, but I think they come up with at least one solid new track every time they put something out. To me they're all good because they up the chance that the band goes on tour and kicks my rear end

We Live isnt great but I think it's somewhat underrated

Witchy, catchy stuff.

I love this vein of stuff, green lung, blood ceremony. It would be so cool to play in one of these kinda bands (running around the woods in a cape, writing songs about running around the woods in a cape, etc)

So this gig was fuckin ridiculous. Psuedo Mind Hive opened and were pretty groovy, more 70s rock than anything else. couldnt really decide who they wanted to sound like but were fun all the same.

Buried Feather were next and were very good. nice mix of psychedelic/shoe gaze sounds with some groove riffs and nice fuzzy guitars.

Child blew me out of the fuckin water with a super heavy, super loud, super fuzzed out set that had the whole room shaking. really big hit with the crowd, everyone just looking at each other like 'what the gently caress man?'

I also went back to the same venue last night and caught Hekate, Lucifungus and Pod People

Lucifungus stole the show, hekate are like if Dio if Dio was a stoner band. Pod People are a bit of a relic in the music scene here but it was a bit too far down the sludge spectrum for my taste, bordering on nu-metal sludge. still fun.

This Friday Im off to see all-female act DAWN, Yanomamo, Mammons Throne

I've seen all but mammons throne before, or maybe I have seen them, I cant recall. not really into Yanomamo but haven't seen them in a few years so maybe I've warmed up to their sound.

dawn have been the heaviest Sydney band for a while and haven't played home turf for over a year so this is gonna be a good gig. I'll see if I can grab some footage since the venue is good and their newer music is way more mature than their EP release was.

seeing live music definitely is a blessing that is not to be taken for granted.

If there is interest I do have a bunch of mini clips from these shows. I usually just throw them up as instagram stories/posts. getting them from phone to postable on the forums is a bit of a chore, but my iphone does a great job in the low light and the audio is usually a bit thin but definitely passable.

more broadly I am looking to buy a new lens for my mirrorless camera and start properly filming stuff for bands. have been practicing on my brothers bands gigs for a while and despite feeling like i have no skills at all, they have been happy with the results on my fairly limited setup.

Thanks, that fuckin rules! A big regret I have is that Boris was going to be playing here with Earth opening, but somebody in the band was sick so it was just Earth, whom I like but I'd seen just like a few months earlier so it was basically the same show :(

On a cool note though, they're doing a split with Bongzilla soon and I drew the cover for it so rad, dude

I mean, I drew all the artwork for their last album but they've been doing some hardcore publicity for it so I figured anybody here would be aware of it/sick of it by now. But it's also the first time that my art has been on a guitar pedal, so I'm pretty jazzed about that.

So a while ago, I came across an album from 2012 from the band Mamont called Passing Through the Mastery Door, it's a little campy, but I absolutely love how primal and fundamentally-focused the groove of the songs are. I know they released a couple EPs afterwards, and--while I like them--they don't capture the same feeling. Can anyone recommend an album or band with similar vibes?

gently caress. That's awesome. I'm a little sad to say I think the art was the best part of Weedsconsin. I mean the album wasn't bad, and maybe I had impossible expectations, but I was a little disappointed. Art is sweet though.

Do you sell any of your stuff to normal humons?

Thanks! They're friends so I don't feel entirely right about criticizing the album, but I do feel like it could have been a bit longer, and that maybe the riffs could have been more interesting after the 16(?) year hiatus. I was happy with the art but I also relied on tried-and-true stoner art tropes like skulls/bongs/weed leaves/smoke, but that was intentional (really!). I usually try to be a bit more experimental with the concept.

I sell stuff for sure, lots of generally low-priced prints. I've done album covers for DVNE and a lot of lesser-known bands so far, but I'm working on Wo Fat's right now.

Thanks! Yeah, those guys are awesome too and James is a cool dude. They have a lot of great material -- the album "Rift" was killer, with an awesome cover by another artist whom I'm unfamiliar with. The album where I did the cover had a really cool Middle-Eastern vibe in terms of scales/modes/whatever, it was dronier but very catchy. It was a shorter album too, which can be preferable for like thrash metal but I like to hear longer segments like the end of "Stones From the Sky." That's just a personal preference though.

I'd love to be able to go to Psycho some year and see some of these bands whom I'd done art for but never met IRL. Looking forward to seeing Bongzilla again when concerts open up though. Although I like it, I'm pretty much a lightweight when it comes to weed so I hope that they don't insist on smoking me up, haha
