I recently found an app that automatically detects panels and displays them one at a time. Haven't tested it out yet, but add some text-to-speech and a slideshow mode and you've got a lovely but accessible motion-comic!

Marvel's Ultraman comics are interesting. If you don't like Ultraman you won't care about them because they're very boring and forgettable and don't have any good characters or fights. But if you do like Ultraman then they'll also make you angry.

I've really been enjoying the IDW TMNT comics, even though the current Sophie Campbell run is starting to wear thin on me because it's mostly a bunch of animal people wearing hip clothes going to punk rock concerts and dishing about boys. I mean it's good and there's still a lot of action and monsters and ninjas, but at times it feels like a furry webcomic that occasionally incidentally features the ninja turtles. I really want them to get the gently caress out of mutant town already.

A ton of crazy poo poo has happened in the series up until then but all you really need to know is summed up on the opening page of her first issue.  I guess the one piece of context that's important is the new fifth turtle, who's pretty central to the run. She's a foot clan assassin who got turned to the light side by Splinter and then turned into a turtle by a combination of exposure to raw mutagen and a life saving blood transfusion from Leonardo. Sophie Campbell really gets into the emotional side of the characters and builds a really interesting community in the newly formed mutant ghetto with all these fun supporting characters. And she's a great artist too. It just feels a little.. downbeat, compared to when the turtles were going to space to fight a war against hundreds of alien soldiers, or when Shredder killed a million men in hell.

I wish comics were cheaper but I don't think cutting the price in half would lead to comic sales doubling. There were a bunch of other factors that lead to decreased comic sales today versus 1955. A large one being people don't have a need to impulse purchase short reading material anymore since everyone has a smart phone so if they know they're gonna be sitting on a bus or waiting in a lobby they can just look at that instead.

I recently wrapped up reading a TPB collection of the first six issues of The First Kingdom by Jack Katz, which is a weird, obscure sci-fi/fantasy comic about a postapocalyptic world and the civilization gradually establishing itself in the midst of horrible monsters and meddling gods. It's done in a very sword-and-sorcery art style, there's a poo poo ton of nudity to the point that it loses impact, it's just that in this world nobody wears a shirt. Katz didn't have a letterer so all the dialogue/captions are in type. Between dense art and very solemn dialogue it can be slow going but it has a good epic feel. The biggest flaw is that Katz's panel layouts are often confusing, I sometimes have to go back over a page to figure out what the sequence is. Overall an interesting story, kind of a fringe work.

The coolest line in the series, possibly the coolest line in fiction, and they cut it! I wasn't fond of the adaptations but I was still excited for the third one just because I wanted to see that scene and that line in live action, and they didn't do it! "You can't shoot someone when they're singing a song." And they also cut his less cool but equally important to the character follow up line later, "They can shoot you when you're singing a song." I’ve only read The Left Hand of Darkness, The Lathe of Heaven, and the first 3/4 of The Dispossessed, and I would recommend The Lathe of Heaven. It gets into its story pretty quickly and, unlike Left Hand, doesn’t make you feel like you’re reading a JRPG codex for the first half of the story. I’m also liking The Dispossessed, it’s pretty dense for sci-fi and spends a lot of time analyzing anarchy as a legitimate political ideology and discusses physics in a way that’s very sci-fi without being technobabble. There is one weird element that happens about 2/3 of the way through that hasn’t been built upon to the point where I am, where the main character sexually assaults a woman. It’s very jarring and doesn’t quite fit the rest of the character, but again I haven’t finished the book yet.
