I had a ticket to see Covet opening for Dance Gavin Dance (who I don't care about) like 2 years ago but I ended up going out of town and had to miss it So I've never seen them live, but I bet they're fun!

Huh? Nah. I just forget about them for six months at a time, then randomly revisit. I suppose I just felt they were under appreciated. Not that they weren’t popular.

not that I'm one to give a gently caress about genre labels, but I think we can safely quarantine the lovely new single by one of the only remaining arena-scale "bands" produced by Max Martin with a video designed to go viral via tiktok filter to the pop music thread then again, their taste is high enough it'll still get laughed out of there too

But they are still a "rock band" of some sort, which basically disqualifies them from the Pop thread because rock bands aren't cool by default

Modest Mouse has some good songs, but they’ve always been a one or two song per album kinda band for me. I appreciate them, but could never listen to an album through.

speaking of people who straddle the line between pop and indie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzUtvC4FDNg Aly and AJ finally dropped their album yesterday, their first full-length in almost 14 years. when they first returned to music they were making a lot of glimmery synth music and while there's definitely still synths in this one it's got a nice beach rock vibe. probably my favorite album so far this year. I don't think I would have guessed when I was watching Phil of the Future as a young teen that I'd be listening to one of the leads almost 2 decades later

At the very least I don't think he's being dishonest, but it's just kind of generic boomer rambling. Gotta pay those bills I guess, since most of the analysis stuff gets demonetized

Every Beato video I've clicked on just seems kind of rambly and meandering. Like I'm hardly a music theory expert myself but I don't think you need 25 minutes to explain why Coldplay's "The Scientist" has a catchy chord progression. I like Adam Neely for theory nerd stuff, the videos are well-edited and his research goes into some really interesting historical and cultural contexts. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFWCbGzxofU

Neely is great even if he does go out if the way to be esoteric but I very much enjoy his work. Also came across this guy recently who has a lot if more practical theory... https://youtube.com/user/MusicTheoryForGuitar He is guitar, but his approach is pretty generalized.

The latest Neely video where they re-harmonize the John Mayer song from a few TikTok clips is really great and fun. Mayer's been absent, I wonder if he'll catch wind of that little project Neely and the girl who started it. They really nailed what I think Mayer was going for in the first place, but who know since no one's heard the song. The guitar line just nails the style he'd go for a track like that too. I think oddly enough he's going to be taking a lot of inspiration from Paramore's After Laughter which was his top Spotify listen and something he was going towards with New Light. Mayer's weak spot is obviously his lyrics so doing something like that made the cheesy lines somewhat fit. It's also the closest thing he's had to hit in a while. It'd be an interesting trend to see more musicians "finish" songs when an artist drops a teaser video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A71rBlN8pag I'm really not into this latest Billie Eilish song, to me it's really bland, and I'm the one who loves Lana Del Rey. I admit I like the trajectory Aly & AJ are moving to. I really liked Billie when Ocean Eyes and those few early songs were out but the music from the albums haven't really ever done anything for me. The visuals/style was nice, given her new look I wonder how she'll fit. I'm kind of just not that interested in her but interested if it'll change any of the pop landscape. girl in red seems to have taken the spot, really sick of hearing her on the radio, loving song is everywhere.
