I think one of the issues with CCGs at the time were they were trying to replicate whatever the license was over being a playable or fun game. They could have just made duel games, but nope, you need get the feel of Star Trek or Wars. There was an Age of Empires CCG that was fairly good, all you had to do was put down cards for mines and farms to produce the right resources to get upgrades and units out. There was also Illuminati which was also pretty decent, but not near as good as the boxed one.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUQVA-I-aa8 First track is kinda catchy - then the thing drops off a cliff starting with "Yabba-Dabba-Do!" But there is: Betty's VO actress saying "the 8-0-8 kick" like she knows what that is, singers who might as well be singing "Can we have our paycheck now?" in "Freddy Funkstone," and a Ina Kamozie SFX sample in "Bedrock I'm really torn on if this was a wasted 33m of my life or not.

I only listened to 8 seconds of it but that sounded familiar.twistedmentat posted:Translucent electronics is still big business because they're the only electronics allowed in prisons, and because the US has such a massive prison population, they sell a ton of them. The BK Kids Club is one of those things that stands out to me because in spite of how ostensibly un-noteworthy it is, basically everybody who's in their early 30s remembers it, and not in a good or nostalgic way. I don't know what it is that makes certain ad campaigns stick in your mind and others not, but with this particular one I think the cynicism of it is so plainly dripping from it that even young kids could look at it and see it. I remember even being quite young and thinking that naming the kid in the wheelchair Wheels was astonishingly insensitive. It's just so obviously a marketing checklist - for your diversity ticks you've got your black kid and an Asian kid, with four white kids, where black and Asian girls may as well have not existed at all in the early 90s as far as marketing was concerned, to say nothing at all about fuckin' Wheels. My entire awareness of this ad campaign was that it was featured in the preview ads of a VHS tape I owned and I still instantly recognized it three decades later. All of these characters sucked, as you'd expect from something purely generated as a bad marketing exercise. Even kids know when they're being pandered to and they'll hate every minute of it like I did. But gimme that loving BK crown. 90s Solo Cup has a new favorite as of 04:54 on May 8, 2021 |

Am I mistaking it, but wasn’t one of the characters (maybe Lingo, oh Lord it was probably Lingo) deaf? Also I’m pretty sure that Jaws’ main character trait was that he really loved cheeseburgers or something like that. Like he was the glue that connected all of the other characters to Burger King. Like it was his role on the team to be like “we gotta go to Burger King after we finish solving the mystery, you guys! All these clues are making me hungry for a Whopper Jr!”

They were in commercials, or at least Kid Vid was because who the hell cares about a bunch of kids who don’t have a tv remote and cool goggles. Also, it’s refreshing to see a bunch of posts about how the BK Kids Club was nakedly cynical marketing instead of the usual “omg only ‘90s kids will understand” bullshit. Like, I get what they were trying to do but jesus humpback christ was it ever so hamfisted

Yea i love looking at the corporate diversity kids stuff from the 90s. Every time i hear some tiny angry idiot on youtube scream about Star Wars having a black person in it as forced diversity, did they miss this crap? This is forced diversity, having people from different backgounds for no other reason than to have them, and even then the characters were still insensitive stereotypes. Black kids were often on skateboards and "urban". Why can't they be the nerd?

BaldDwarfOnPCP posted:Urkel was a science geek. But that wasn't forced, it was just a character on a very popular sitcom. Oh totally. First you're not aware of sterotypes and then you are ignorant that behind the scenes most of the people in charge are going to still be white. If you were a weirdo like me and watched the news with your dad you saw racist stuff on the news, either straight up "cops in LA accused to racism" or pushing racist narratives about gangs. I probably already mentioned this but there was a serious paranoia that jimmy from the suburbs was going to end up joining the Latin Kings or something.
