I just watched Mirai, the latest film by Mamoru Hosoda (The Boy & the Beast, Summer Wars, Wolf Children)

It's not my favourite of his but it was a fairly enjoyable light and fluffy magical realism story about childhood, with a few standout moments:

- The scenes involving the human version of the family dog. I laughed so much when he was giving a pompous monologue about jealousy then got distracted by the squeaky ball.
- The end sequence with the nightmarish train station and the shinkansen from hell. That was something else :stonk:

Hosoda's next film, coming out this year, looks fuckin great:

Plot description:
"Belle" follows Suzu, a 17-year-old high school student living in a rural village with her father. For years she has only been a shadow of herself. One day, Suzu enters "U," a virtual world of five billion online members, and she becomes Belle, a world-famous singer. Belle soon meets with a mysterious creature with whom she embarks on a journey of adventures and love in their quest of becoming who they truly are.

I am so fuckin stoked for this film :h:

Watched the Ms vs the Ms. Absolutely loved it. For the first part I was actually dreading the robots turning up because the family drama was so good and I wanted the movie to be just that but when the robots did turn up it was so good.

Also they really milked the dog/pig/loaf of bread joke for all it's work but somehow it got funnier every time.

Really loved this after watching it. I want to see all the short films that Katie made, like Dog Cop 4, Dial B for Burger, or Fear and Loathing in Central Michigan.

watching onward

so far it's pretty solid, and barley is a great character (jock D&D nerd is a great dynamic), and corey is good too (she's also animated really well)

also even though it's another pixar 'people go on a journey' movie, it's kept within a smaller range than the average animated film so the set pieces are more interesting because they're localized... so one set piece being an applebees, another being a gas station that leads to a motorcycle chase, gives it a different adventure feel

also all the physical comedy with the dad is great. and the mom does crimes!!

only negative was they felt like they had to have minor drama ("you think i'm a screwup?") that ends up being immediately resolved. although i think it's funny that they did soundalikes for songs like anyway you want it (when the dad dances)

e: dang that was a good movie. all the good pixar movies have a clear personal connection to the director

I probably enjoyed it more than Soul if I think about it

"Oooh, got a little too serious. You okay there, little buddy?"
Watched Son Of The White Mare ( Fehérlófia) 1981 last night and loved every frame of it. The bold, unblended colours contrasting with stark black are so vivid. The voice work is really evocative, especially for the villians. And some of the character designs are really unexpected and cool. Every part of a scene is constantly moving, warping and changing colours it's such a mythological, dreamlike trip. The only thing I've seen I think had a similar feel would be Belladonna of Sadness, but kind of only in a tangential way.

If you're a fan of animation you should really make the time to watch it. What a treat.

One positive/negative about this being a Netflix release is that I would probably otherwise have waited to see it in the theater as my first post-pandemic movie, but I guess it'l be another small screen weekend.

Movie theaters are fantastic and the only way Mitchell’s would have been better is if my first time seeing it was on a giant screen with a bunch of people laughing at the jokes with me. Are you all not sick of sitting on your couch and watching new releases after 18+ months of that?
Finally was able to get the family to align to watch MvsM and it was of course amazing. But I still wish I could've seen it on a big screen.

I've had to confront some harsh realities this week that while I'm fully sick of being in my house, none of my Zoom rectangle co-workers are. I thought we were walking toward the light at the end of the tunnel but a lot of people want to live in the tunnel.

I like Onward more and more as I think about it and rewatch parts of it. Barley's unresolved feelings toward his dad are incredibly relatable and lift up the movie on rewatch. Compared to Soul's "hey, life is interesting, smell a flower dude" which I have trouble getting a lot out of.

Yeah, turns out I love having a 0 minute commute, the freedom of being able to prioritize assignments as I see instead of having to try and get 7 things done at one time because reasons, and not dealing with people.

If they could fix it so I worked from home 80% of the time my mental health would be In such better shape.

I watched New Gods: Nezha Reborn, it was good but felt like it was ripping off so much style from final fantasy 7 so weirdly specifically. However, it made a reasonable and thought out reason someone would wear weird metal shoulder pauldrons with giant hollow bolts on the shoulders. So I give it some good points for stealing a style then thinking it out more than the thing they stole it from.
