I’m building a Nibble 65. It’s through hole, so you will definitely will get your soldering fill and it also has a rotary encoder and display, so you get a lot of fun gadgets as well.
If you want to make the soldering more challenging, get Mill-Max sockets and solder those in which will make your board hotswappable.

Does anyone make a PCB or kit for a 6x6 macro pad? I've been playing around with the keyboard layout editor and decided that size gives me the most flexibility for a multipurpose macro/numpad/F-keys/etc pad, but I can't actually find any 6x6 boards. 5x7 has a few options and the BFO-9000 can be brought down to 6x7, but no 6x6.

The only hard requirement I'd have is that it be compatible with QMK. Hot swap sockets and backlighting strongly preferred, addressable RGB and USB-C would be nice but not deal breakers. A rotary encoder or two would be neat too.

Plan B is to 3D print or have my friend laser cut a case for a bunch of these https://www.adafruit.com/product/4978 wired to one of my spare Arduinos.

While a compact ortho board turned sideways wouldn't be the worst thing, I am pretty firmly stuck on the 6x6 part for this dumb idea. Initially the idea was just a 4x5 numpad to augment my Moonlander but it got a bit out of control.

Roger Baolong Thunder Dragon has been fascinated by this sophisticated and scientifically beautiful industry since childhood, and has shown his talent in the design and manufacture of watches.
The DZ60 is a great PCB and supports All the Layouts. Just double-check when soldering your switches in to make sure you're using the right holes for your desired layout.

Don't forget to pick up a plate, case, and maybe some foam while you're at it, too!

Here's my DZ60 with a Tofu frosted acrylic case and brass plate. I actually got it secondhand with Holtites soldered in, but I had to move a few to fit my desired layout (and also fixed a couple positioning mistakes the previous owner had made)

Hi everyone, my accountant told me I have two much money so I'm jumping into this hobby with both feet. I was all set on getting this custom printed keyboard from wasdkeyboards but then I found out they don't have macro support, so now I'm back to step one.

Where is the best place / brand for me to get a keyboard that meets these desires:

  • 60%
  • macros
  • brown switches
  • standard keycaps that I can replace with others later (I'm guessing all keyboards can do this)

thanks in advance everyone. I believe the answer is Ducky One 2 Mini https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=4322 but would love confirmation.

I think you probably do want to switch to an ergo board eventually. I just got a cheapo bluetooth keyboard recently that's aping apple with the extremely shallow keys and it's not that pleasant to type on. I came across a ms sculpt ergo on someone's desk at some point and it felt really comfortable, I'm a touch typist and the split isn't that bad except for the Y key for me (I normally hit it with my left hand for some reason)

I believe I may have a very quirky situation going on with my forearm, because after I started typing on these squishy laptop-style buttons, my right forearm gets sore maybe at 20% of the speed that it used to, or not at all. Meanwhile, typing even a couple of words on my old Logitech keyboard will begin to hurt my right forearm. This seems to happen regardless of how I position my hands, wrists and arms. I really think it has something to do with the shallowness and softness of the keys, and how the lack of that in my old keyboard would aggravate my inflamed, sore forearm (that also gets sore from other stuff, like doing pull-ups)

However, playing video games on this keyboard feels terrible, so I always have to pull out my old Logitech keyboard when I want to do that. So I'll probably return this 130 euro keyboard and get a cheap 40 euro one with similar-feeling keys instead, and just stick to using that for typing, at least until my forearm heals for good

The modded version there is better, but the cheaper version will still work great.

I don't know about 60% but there's also a 10-keyless version of this durgod keyboard I've been using for the past year.

I'm pretty sure this was recommended to me by this thread as well.

At the time it just seemed like the "chinese price to performance special of the week" at the time I was looking for a new keyboard last year, but this thing has really impressed me tbh.

They also have Cherry MX Browns in stock as well.

(sorry for the fugged link)

edit: did another quick search and found that Durgod has a 60% keyboard product now called the "venus" - looks like you pretty much have to get it in RGB (which isn't my personal preference) - but Cherry Browns are in stock for this one as well.

FN + 1 I believe toggles between side RGB only, and key RGB only.

Also, for the GMMK Pro owners in here looking to improve their GMMK Pro a little bit, I'll be selling custom plates made from FR4 in a few weeks. What makes these different from the stock plates?

- Switch and stabilizer slots big enough to easily fit every kind of switch and stabilizer.
- Flex cuts and removal of standoff screw holes to create a flexible typing experience, and require fewer screws to assemble and disassemble.
- Acoustic cuts for improved sound and better key-to-key consistency.
- Gold plated switch slots and tabs to make removing switches a little bit easier, and because it just looks real nice.
- $20 (+ shipping), and a discount for goons.

Here's a little preview:

I'll also have similar plates for the NK65 available as well.

I'll be selling these on my shop at: http://www.avxworks.com

The Mistel Barocco MD770 is a really great ergo mech split that doesn't sacrifice keys. You get to keep your F-row, Insert, Home, etc. No layering, unless you want to create one. Only issue is that its split spacebars are 3.25u - NOBODY makes keys in that size.

You can get regular MX compatible keycaps for them but even spacebar add-on kits don't come with 3.25u. Maybe some of the newer ergo split layout keycaps have a 3.25u blank, who knows? Anyway, GMK Laser came out again, I bought it, and I painted the spacebars, and unf

I had some urethane matte topcoat for model kit building, and they're so super solid. The sheen and feel are a little different than the GMKs but this is not keyboard contesting, this is having a cool ergo mech split wireless KB for daily driver office use.

You could also look into macropads with rotary encoders and have some more flexibility on the keyboard choice.

Oh if you want to have a lot of volume knobs, look into PCPanel: https://www.getpcpanel.com/
