Oh, they didn’t know it was gonna be the final season? That’s a shame.

Yeah apparently they didn't know until after the season had wrapped production so they had to mess around with the editing on the last episode to make it less opened ended. I really wish there was more or they would have at least known during the filming so they could have added more closure to some of the storylines and characters but like I said in my other post life doesn't have closure on everything so the ambiguity isn't necessarily bad.

Ed Helms just isn’t a lead. He’s great as a member of an ensemble, but his energy is grating when he’s a major focus. Rutherford Falls is a good example of this.

Just finished the first so if Shadow and Bone and... it’s pretty good? I did see it has an 86% on RT beforehand and read the premise on Wikipedia which preempted my inevitable questions about why there’s all these random Russian references.

The different story lines converging at the end wasn't all that satisfying IMO. Now I know that it's because they are completely different stories from different books being shoehorned together

I finished Jupiter's Legacy and there's some good ideas in there but overall it was a waste of time. Some bad casting, terrible costuming, lousy acting and very unimpressive special effects.

Michael is terrible and keeps being terrible, but I am still surprised by how well that show holds up having never watched it before, and also how prescient it is in a lot of ways. There are definitely a lot of Trumpisms in that character, and also it shows just how blatantly and nakedly Corporate just doesn't care about people and how it continually ruins lives. The little arc about the mom & pop paper company shutting down because of their corporate espionage was heartbreaking to watch, and it was SUCH a small aside. That's the kind of stuff that elevates it for the modern day, I think.

When it gets into big weddings and babies and and has to have its sugary sweet sappy moments it's less tolerable for me at least.

The problem with Michael is the same problem that I have with Barney on How I Met Your Mother. We're supposed to be horrified by his antics, but every so often he does something redeeming and the audience is expected to forget all past wrongs and just chuckle and say, "Oh, Michael (or Barney), you rascal." And that intensifies in later seasons, when the antics get more and more ridiculous and self-centered.

I have spent a lot of time in the hospital over the last six months and during that time I've probably seen almost every single episode of The Office on Comedy Central, and my takeaway is this: Essentially every single character on that show is an absolutely terrible person with almost no redeeming aspects. We're supposed to--ostensibly, at least--cheer for at least some of these characters, but deep down they are all monsters. The only people exempt from this I guess are Holly, Erin and ... yeah, I got nothing.

This reminds me a lot of the later years of Californication.

As it relates to The Office, I think I saw Jim becomes a dick in the later seasons (again, I'm early in 3) to where he becomes akin to JD from Scrubs in that he loses his likability?

This is partly why I like the late-season 5 story arc I mentioned to you above. Part of it is a completely new character enters the office setting, and from this blank slate immediately perceives Jim to be this immature weirdo fixated on childish pranks. And Jim knows that it's not entirely wrong either so he can never really dig himself out of that hole. It's one of the reasons I really like that arc.

Big Mean Jerk
Jan 27, 2009

Well, of course I know him.
He's me.
Watching Jim’s bullshit as an adult makes it really clear that he’s just as much of a piece of poo poo as Roy. He’s selfish and impatient, and after he confesses his feelings to Pam in that early finale he immediately throws her perfectly rational and valid rejection back in her face with a pithy “sorry I misinterpreted our friendship” line. And then he just forces the issue anyway by kissing her a few minutes later. This poor woman is literally in the midst of planning her wedding and doesn’t want to risk blowing it all up for a guy that she’s work-friends with, but he doesn’t give a gently caress about any of that.

gently caress Jim.

That show; in my opinion; was the muderporniest of the murderporn shows like csi and ncis etc. It is at its worst when they do their meta-plot arcs because they're very soap opera x tom clancy nonsense. Meta-plot is probably the wrong term for character advancement.

I liked it overall, but it was much too slow. There was no reason for them to spend so long on a boring flashback origin story, especially not when the present stuff wasn't much better either.

I’m about halfway through Jupiter’s Legacy and i’m also not a big fan of the Watchmen: Depression Era melodrama.

Maybe if they had spent one episode on Not Adrian Veidt and his pals’ origin stories, it would’ve been fine, but yeah, i’m much more interested in the present day plot.

Yeah I was so thoroughly bored I skipped to the end halfway through episode 2. Not claiming that gives the show a fair shake, but the ending looked just as boring as the rest of the show.

Prodigal son has been canceled at Fox. The quality per episode was drastically varied, but for a trashy show about serial killers and profilers it was definitely fun. Kind of sad about this one. It was the perfect show to catch up on a Saturday after skipping it for a few months if you were bored and cleaning the house.
