walking into the h mart the doors slid, rather than swung, open, a feature common to many rich east asian architectural cultures -- though here glass has replaced rice paper. in a feat of subtle whimsy the doors are moved as though by an unseen hand as you approach, reflecting the animist traditions of the region

There seems to be something wiser, more ancient, more mystical about this sanctuary. We could learn much from these people, just as we teach them the ways of the modern world.

Of course, Hollande, like most people outside the uk, knew jack loving poo poo about English law relative to the presse and lowered his head, ashamed, instead of answering proudly "no actually, DSK told me on the phone yesterday that he wished we had the same bullshit newspaper laws as England so he could silence the whole story in the french press with a single phone-call to a judge!"

Undoubtedly a step down in prestige, but Bruenig never really seemed to fit on opinion pages. This "Ideas" section might be a better fit.

She's more of a features reporter with a political point of view. Opinion writers are usually ... I dunno a lot less enterprising than reporters. Most of them seem to just poo poo out 700 words on the topic of the day 3 times a week (or make their research assistants poo poo out 700 words 3 times a week).

I suspect James Bennet has something to do with the mass exodus. Bruenig posts she was devastated by him resigning at the Times. He's not at the Atlantic at the moment, but he ran the place for a decade.

I remember reading something about how Dominique Strauss-Kahn was about to set the IMF on a path towards a currency and economic shift that would've been the biggest change since Bretton Woods

And then he got hit by the charges a week later

That was a crack ping

Bruenig had a different job description than anyone else in the Opinions section. I think she was either Opinions Writer or Opinions Reporter, and so her pieces were, as you say, reported features that were typically longer than a column. The death penalty piece she did, for instance, was based on months of research and interviews. Columns, on the other hand, may have original research but typically do not (and they aren't fact checked, lol). Bruenig was actually the last person with her job description working for the Opinions section, which makes me wonder why she was even hired to begin with. Bennet had some kind of weird vision.

Yeah, I've worked at a few places that had "enterprise reporter" positions, where the reporter is free of a daily beat and allowed to conduct long-term investigative reporting as they see fit. Those are vanishingly rare jobs these days. Seems to be what they were going for? Doesn't make a ton of sense in Opinion.
