It's been out for a few months now, but if you're a Mountain Goats fan and haven't yet listened to The Jordan Lake Sessions, get on that immediately. It's a positively joyous reprisal of a broad swathe of the band's work and, as much as I love the lo-fi aesthetic in a lot of the early albums, they're glorious in hi-fi so long as you have a decent set of speakers. Volumes 1 and 2 are out now, 3 and 4 are recorded and yet to release. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YcrDgsveJwQ

Well probably dating myself here but back in the halcyon days of the early 00s amidst a wash of "indietronica" (boy that's a gross word that they eventually spinned into "IDM" ugh) a Norwegian dou of erland oye and sondre lerche had a band that was maybe a tinge late to the "neutral milk hotel / american analog set" party and too early for the "Appleseed cast" post emo slow core drone stuff called "kings of convenience". They split and did side stuff that wasn't bad bit went about as far as Travis Morrison records (read 0.0 on pitchfork). They got a new record coming out. https://kingsofconvenience.eu/#! It's like sad.norweigan bossa Nova or something. But great on a dreary morning and a hot mug of whatever.

Was just looking at a recent vid from The Weeknd and had a flash back to ... like... 10 years ago? And some goon posted him in either this forum or maybe it was a torrent forum back when they existed. And they said "here's a new guy... y'all watch out he's gonna be big." They weren't lyin. Also his super bowl show (despite a lovely mix) is loving awesome.

Sylvan Esso is $107 for two tickets in my area. I’m pre-outraged at how expensive tickets are in 2021, but at the same time I’m willing to pay whatever to see live music again.

I've picked up a bunch of tickets that are mostly reasonably priced - paid around $20-30 for Oh Sees, Arlo Parks, and Black Midi The priciest one right now was 50 something for Glass Animals, they're playing a big outdoor venue but not quite as large as a stadium/arena

The new St Vincent is out today. I'm generally a big fan, even if her last tour absolutely sucked for playing to a backing track and not touring with a band, and barely moving on stage. The new album is just okay so far. None of the singles released really blew me away, and listening to them now in the context of the whole album, they all sound a little too alike. It's like she found one song from the early 70s that she wanted to find inspiration from, and said, yes, I want the entire album to sound like this specific song, no variety. Also, still a little weirded out by how she's marketing the album as a celebration of her father coming home from prison for doing white collar crime. It'd be one thing if it was just her being happy that he's home, but given that she is actually marketing it about that, she is surprisingly defensive when asked about it in interviews so far, and seems like she thinks the fact that he was sent to prison for so long was silly.

The discourse around all her album releases is weird and generally just best ignored. Even if it is her fault.

You’re not taking the NPR tax into account. I would be a little surprised if there isn’t a class of artist/promoter/venue who will try to recoup for last year with ticket prices this year. Maybe not.

Ticket prices are really wild right now. I saw that Rina Sawayama is gonna tour in early 2022 and looked if there was a show in Chicago, which there was, but GA ticket prices on the after market were minimum $150 a pop. Then I looked to see if there was a show in Minneapolis and there was one in a venue roughly the same size and they were selling tickets for like $25. I get the feeling that direct sales are gonna be cheap and the second tickets sell out they’ll be 5-10x markup for even the cheapest shows

So one of my favorite artists, Nick Rattigan, is dropping an indie film tonight, with a vinyl pre-order tie-in (as well as cassette and CD). You have to buy a ticket to be allowed to stream.
