Do you owe it to the parents to hand over the browsing history of their kids? I'd try to avoid doing it. A blanket statement like "we operate a robust content filter and haven't received any alerts for this user" would be fine, but I can't see any reason to hand over a list of sites that a teenager has been viewing to their parents.

I would stick to the spaces you manage. Taking the local browser history from a machine seems to be out of scope. I am a tad confused on how these systems are managed though, because how they are managed might put you in a weird spot both legally and ethically.

Sickening posted:I am a tad confused on how these systems are managed though basically not at all, they're not on our domain and the kids/families have local admin rights. here's the rundown: we order computers on behalf of the families, charge them the cost per unit and the computer is considered their property. we place the order in like, july. ordering them earlier in the year is apparently a complete impossibility because our budget rolls over during the summer and carving a chunk out for pc purchases in the spring is the most insane idea anyone has ever heard. they usually arrive about two weeks before school starts. i spread out 10-12 at a time in the school library and get to work with my flash drives. each one takes about ten minutes so if i'm running them simultaneously i can get a lot done in a fairly short amount of time. then once they're all imaged i go through them one by one and set them up for the kid they're going to--logging into microsoft services, making sure their licenses are working and doing all the post-login config that i could automate if our endpoint manager setup wasn't totally hosed. (i have never been clear on why this is but it makes any kind of gpo/remote deployment stuff a complete non-starter. i'm sure i've already complained about this itt.) then on the first day of school the incoming sixth graders get their new laptop and it's ready to use as soon as they open the lid. my goal is to approximate as closely as possible the ease of setup of a chromebook, since we are the only school in town that doesn't use them. i'm pretty much hands-off from that point on unless the kid comes to my office with a specific problem. we use meraki for filtering but in my opinion their filter lists could really use some work. not sure why nintendolife.com is blocked under "games" but nintendo.com is fully accessible. anyway. i know it's a bad process but i have such limited tools available to me that this is my only method of managing the fleet in a way that isn't a pain in the rear end for everyone else everything i do at work puts me in a weird spot ethically because it's a catholic institution, but then i get that vatican gold direct deposited into my checking account

I can't imagine any reason at all that a parent should be in a position to ask a school IT person to look at their child's browser history. If that's a necessary function of the school, then a tool should be in place so that the school administrators can handle that problem and not involve IT in any way other than questions on how to use the tool or assistance if it breaks.

if you're really lucky you get to integrate 25 new pieces of EdUcAtIoNaL sOfTwArE with your SIS every semester because each department just decides it wants to use NEW SHINY THING and IT is gonna support it and there are no checks and balances to confirm IT has the resources to support NEW SHINY THING before the contract is signed and once the contract is signed you can't say no because "we spent all this moneyyyyyyyyy"

I outed a kid who was downloading scads of porn because 1) he was using lab computers to do it. 2) he was storing said barnyard porn in his student folder. 3) He was using some virus ridden torrent software to do it and we had to flatten and reinstall every computer he touched.

I'm going to try and knock out my A by the end of next year, then just sit whatever test I'm feeling every 3 years to keep it current. That, plus IBM starting AIX and power certification again gets me very well positioned for my goal of hitting contract to contract in the next 5-10 years.
