Fired up my Q2 for the first time in a few months bc I was craving some Superhot and was bombarded with 'tracking lost' errors, and now even though they've gone away following a few reboots it's still horrendously nauseatingly wobbly. I was worried that it had somehow developed some kind of hardware problem in the time it's been sitting unused but a quick search on Reddit suggests that v27 and a bunch of other upgrades have introduced, fixed, and re-introduced this nasty wobbly tracking problem and god jesus christ. Factory reset time maybe I guess?

The tracking on mine also went to crap recently, but sorted itself out in a few hours of use. I had thought it was because it got dropped and took a while to re-calibrate; maybe it was just updates.

Tracking cameras are definitely spotless. I'll give it another try and see if it spontaneously improves with use. Seen people elsewhere suggesting that too.

I remember back in December-ish there was a firmware update that introduced a bug where it was about 50:50 that coming out of standby would make the tracking completely freak out and go into slo-mo stomach churning drunk mode, and the only thing that fixed that was a factory reset, and that was a giant pain in the dick, so hopefully I can avoid a repeat.

Still, though, how does this stuff get through?

Some people reported better results by deleting/resetting the guardian area.

Clearing all my guardian data didn't do anything, but resetting experimental feature settings seems to have done the trick. I was pretty much resorting to trying poo poo at random at that point. Oh well, at least I just lost a couple hours of my evening off instead of damaging furniture/hurting myself due to guardian drift, like I saw a few people reporting while I was hunting for solutions.

Anyone have fps issues with Halflife Alyx? I have a 3080 and i5 8600k, and while it runs fine almost all the time I occasionally get drops down to 40fps. Happens on both Rift S and Quest 2, and doesn't seem to matter what quality settings I run it at. I've never really been that fussed, but just read a tech performance review that says a 2080 gets 180fps n never drops a frame. fpsVR has my cpu n gpu both running about 60%.

Earlier Chromecasts had bad interactions with the original Quest, which were apparently not fixable on the Quest side (I don’t recall the specifics). A more modern one might well work better.

drat that owns. I actually gave NMS another go with AirLink a week or two again to check out performance and it was ok but DLSS should significantly help. I had a few hiccups when making quick turns looking around.

Or maybe before as to compare.

Just got an email from Amazon that Oculus are apparently doing a recall on Quest 2 facial interfaces due to irritability if your Quest 2 was manufactured before Jan 4th 2021

https://support.oculus.com/1504463656600795

I've been using a silicon cover for the last couple of months because I assumed it was in fact my face that was broken.

edit; Requested a replacement facial interface, looking forward to getting banned from the Zuck Universe because my Facebook name doesn't match my real one 👀

Now they just need to fix the garbage VR flight controls and that game will be amazing in VR.

The entire VR UI could use another pass. It’s… not great. I need to dig in the settings to see how much of it I can tweak but the default options in terms of hud and looking/moving around where trash. In addition to the inventory and crafting UI not being fun at all in VR.

I wanted to mention, if anyone picked up Subnautica: Below Zero and was sad they dropped VR support, it's been added back in with a mod and is better than ever.

Subnautica was my first real sitdown longform game on my CV1 and I'm so happy I can play the sequel in VR as well.

I’ve been playing BZ in VR and the experience is roughly on par with the native support in the original (although some of the QoL stuff from VR mods in the original is missing and loss-of-control animations like when you open a door haven’t been stripped from VR mode like in the original).

As a game though, I think I prefer the original at this point. The story is narrative driven (as opposed to “oh gently caress I’m all alone and my ship just blew up”) and in general the horror aspect feels severely lacking.

Performance is much better and I haven’t noticed any pop-in problems. Hopefully they backport the new engine to the first game.

Yeah this is awesome. I guess other than Valve, Hello Games are one of the higher profile VR devs? Either way its nice.

NMS is also a game not originally designed for VR so it'll really help the performance, compared to games designed for VR where it'll just be more nice to have.

NMS in VR really is great, it's my most played single player game at 50 hours in VR. I should pick it up again, I'm behind on lots of patches. Just a ton of fun to get high and scoot about. I never had any issue with the controls - the flying is arcadey but it works fine. Little things like coming in for a landing and killing thrusters while you pull the nose up a bit just feel so good.

The Subnautica UI is really badly integrated (i have to close one eye sometimes just to focus on it), and having to look directly up to swim to the surface quickly starts to really be a PAIN IN THE NECK HA HA because you do it all the time, but the immersion still feels really cool. I'm pretty resilient to VR giving you strange feelings, and the flat game when i played it didn't have as much of an effect as it seemed to on other people, but it's probably the strongest heebiejeebies i've felt from a VR experience yet

There was also a swim up/down that I think was unbound by default in Subnautica, just add them to the bumper buttons which seems to now be the default control scheme in Below Zero.

I'm playing Below Zero in VR, it's been absolutely fantastic. The mod devs have been updating the mod steadily as well, recent updates allow you to set the PDA distance via a slider in the options and you can also change it's position using: home, end, page up and page down.

So I installed that mod and tried to play in flat, the PDA is way tiny and I absolutely can’t find any such slider. I basically have to uninstall/reinstall the mod to switch back and forth.

Where’s the slider for you?!

e: I guess my brain shut off and I just stopped reading before the part about keybinds for it. I feel like a dingus now. Thanks, though!

You can also make two shortcuts if you switch between modes frequently. One with launch flag -vrmode none for pancake and one with -vrmode oculus (or OpenVR) for VR.

Although the Quest v29 list of features from the blog doesn't seem that interesting (at least, if you don't have an iPhone), it has a pair of extra things not mentioned in the blog, like the (virtual) controllers now show the dots battery indicators, instead of being on the universal menu, and it seems they have unlocked the 120hz in both Link and AirLink.

We also have not commented how it seems ads are coming to the store. First in the mobile app, but eventually will come to VR itself.

Tomorrow Yupitergrad will have an update, 10 new levels in time trial, and 120hz for Q2.

So subnautica in vr is just playing with regular FPS controls on a regular controller but you can look around with your head? Is this what RE7 and that hitman vr implementation did?

I do not get the hype for that kinda thing. The physical interaction is what makes vr really work imo. Like I have seen so many comments saying RE7 was the best vr game ever and it’s clearly a game that was retrofitted with vr support. Even something like Tetris Effect, people hyped up the vr component but you really don’t lose anything at all just playing it on a screen. In that case I’d argue the sound is more important than the visuals, I enjoyed it more on my stereo speakers than my vr earbuds.

Meanwhile I completely get the appeal of vr with a normal (or hotas) controller for flight/space/driving sims. It adds a lot to those games imo.

Oh I'm with ya there, for sure. It's a constant struggle to play the game because of that, but man it feels rewarding. VR just makes it so much more immersive and provides an inescapable sense of scale, even if it's not complete VR.

But yeah, I think one just needs to judge it on the right metrics. Would I recommend Subnautica as a VR experience? No. Would I recommend VR as a Subnautica experience? Oh hell yes.

He's soooo dreamy...

Yeah, I think at some point the question stops being "is this a good showcase for VR" and starts being "is this the best possible way to experience the game" and that's how you get people saying things like Resident Evil 7 is an amazing VR experience. No, it doesn't do anything unique with VR as a medium, but it's a game that relies heavily on immersion using a piece of technology that greatly increases immersion, so the end result is still an absolutely fantastic experience that does precisely what it sets out to do. Tetris Effect is a similar story: it's all about zoning out to the visuals and audio and getting completely immersed by them, so something that blocks all outside distractions is going to work wonders for it even if the game functions identically to its flat counterpart . Hell, the question of "why Tetris Effect in VR?" is practically the same question (with practically the same answer) as "why Tetris Effect at all?" since most of what's notable about the game is purely aesthetic rather than mechanical.
