Everything I've seen of Vicky 3 is like, the pie-in-the-sky wishlist of what fans imagined their perfect game to be. Except it's not a wishlist, it's the real feature list of the thing they're actually making. If even half of it comes together in a way that feels like a cohesive product, it's going to be Paradox's finest game yet.

Very excited for this. I really, really hope they go back to using actual music from the era like in V1. That added so much atmosphere that was lacking in the second. Also a way to subsidize/incentivize factories you want built when you're not going full command economy would be nice.

Hopefully the game has a better economic simulation. Either they modify the way you get money for factories or they actually automate the process so that the free market truly does what it’s supposed to from a supply/demand perspective. I do not want to go through another game where instead of a thriving industry I find out every factory the capitalists build is making canned food or glass.

Eric Hobswains Age of Revolution/Age of Capital/Age of Empire trilogy is a classic - they very much defined the concept of the "Long 19th Century" Victoria plays with. They aren't the most up to date, but are approachable for beginners for a text by an academic.

Victoria II came out a bit before my time/I was way, way too deep into AoEII and then RA2 at the time, then I discovered HoI2. Anyway, I've heard all the rumblings about Vicky 2 over the years, but held off ever trying it. I am really, really excited for this.

If I'm going to be honest, even though I'm pretty sure Vicky 2 is a better game, I always did like the original Vicky/Ricky more. I played the crap out of that in high school.

What I really loved about the original Vicky was how broken it was in so many ways. You could do crazy poo poo like play Uruguay, use a few tricks to implement all social and political reforms asap, and then all the immigration from Europe came to you. Which was particularly great, because Uruguay had just one state, and in early Vicky 1, capitalists gave a a factory output efficiency bonus without stacking penalty, so what you did was build a level 1 factory of all good types, then have one craftsmen and one clerk pop in each, and then turn every single other pop you have into capitalists. So pretty soon you have a tiny country with >50M pop, with a few factory workers that each have a hundred capitalists looking over their shoulders, and the whole setup is ridiculously profitable, as you can compete with the industrial output of the rest of the world while only taking enough input products to run a single level 1 factory.

You don't even need a mod to have period music btw. Turn music volume in the game down and then find one of the appx 10 million spotify or youtube playlists for "habsburg military marches" or "sea shanties" "socialist music" or "turkmenistani folk"
