New Lord of the Rings is just like gently caress it, pack a lunch and a change of clothes because this thing is 7 hours long. No intermission. Must be in character to purchase a ticket. Theaters only. This one has 5 gollums in it and they're all played by Chris Tucker.

2 episodes in and it's pretty great, despite how dumb the leads are. Not sure how many of you are familiar with Gantz, but it reminds of that mixed with Battle Royale vibes mixed with the Purge mixed with Saw...lmao.

Finished this up yesterday. The drama/suspense started to lose steam at around episode 6, then in the finale for episodes 7 and 8 I ended up not being as engaged—likely because I didn't really care about the characters in focus at that point and the lead being such a wet blanket of a protagonist. Still though, overall I thought it was good, but it definitely finishes on a whimper. The mystery behind the premise is very solid through to the end, so I'll likely check out season 2.

MODOK is good actually. It's got funny jokes, real heart, and lots of fun stop motion action. I hate all MCU stuff so I didn't get any of the references but I didn't need to. It was still very enjoyable.

I enjoyed Woman in the Window quite a bit. Nice balance of psychodrama and stuff that just straight up made me laugh. It's a pretty funny movie in spots, and my favorite character is The Nicest Police Detective in the World.

Randomly decided to start The Shield as I've never seen it and I am a little over half way through S2 and this show is just bonkers. I recently did a re-watch of The Wire which I think made the first few episodes of The Shield feel incredibly jarring. The Wire is just so grounded and The Shield is just so bombastic that it took a few episodes to really gel with how they wanted to tell their story. But I'm all in now. I hear it does nothing but ramp up from here on out which has me hyped because S2 has been pretty crazy so far. Armadillo is the perfect sadistic antagonist for Vic to go after so I hope there are some more characters like that who really push Vic to his limits.

Based on my memories of reading the manga like five years ago, there's a lot of cool stuff after where the first season cuts out.

Also it has a surprisingly non-awful portrayal of a trans character?

As great as the actress for Hikari/Kuina was, I wish they cast someone actually trans. At least she gets one of the best scenes of the season I guess.

The Shield definitely gets better and more interesting as it progresses. If you're into the show at this point I think you're in for a great time. I wanted to drop the show for so many hours but am glad I stuck it out and watched it all. The thing is you can't really recommend skipping any seasons of the show because parts from the very beginning of the show continue to matter throughout the entire series.

It's fine, but as you said it rapidly loses its steam towards the end of the season. It establishes such an insane status quo and immediately has to backpedal unto it.

Premise is fine though. I'm surprised this particular format isn't more popular for adaption (as the human interaction is squarely in focus rather than action).

I am doing a rewatch now as well, its easily one of my favorite shows ever. And yeah Forest Whitaker showing up rules but the Glenn Close and Anthony Anderson season is awesome. Also it gave us Frank Grillo and Walton Goggins

I went back and forth on The Shield during the middle seasons, but the last season and especially the finale really do pull it all together. There's a lot of great actors in it, but it's still basically the Walton Goggins show for me. There's a particular line reading from him in one episode that is both extremely sad and pathetic and really funny, and I still think about it and laugh sometimes. Great show.

Also, it eventually led to this scene:

Army of the Dead was entertaining enough, as long as I don't think too hard about it. Some spoilerish notes: The robot zombies were odd, but I like when things aren't always wrapped up in neat little packages. Discussing potential answers is far more satisfying than getting one from a writer or director.

Did the zombie riding the horse feel like a Planet of the Apes homage to anyone else? I haven't read any reviews outside this thread, and haven't seen that mentioned here.

I'm not usually one to notice these things, but the wire work when the tiger attacks Martin was distractingly obvious.

And Van not noticing that bite for that long? Dumb as hell.

More the "survive death games with perverse parameters" element from the Saw movies than the gore. [edit] Although there is plenty of graphic violence.

Ah. Thanks for explaining. I don't mind graphic violence, but I never liked the whole torture porn genre that seemed to be the only horror movies released for about a decade there. Making people uncomfortable by bodily mutilation is not the same as horror, even if it is horrible.

His shoulder got dislocated, first so I'd speculate the pain would have distracted from the bite. Also supposedly slowed his blood flow which is why he took longer to turn.
