I liked playing as Mexico, it became a survival game as you attempted to piece together enough of an army to fight off the eternal gringo hell wars until hopefully you managed to push back enough they couldn't fight a war anymore. or more likely you just accepted that first big loss and then picked up the pieces.

I'll probably roll France for a first game, they're large and powerful enough to be forgiving of mistakes with room for expansion and the obvious goal of knocking those arrogant Anglos down a peg. Good enough for learning the game, plus I have a soft spot for their geopolitical position.

Also just checked out the Vickynomics pamphlet and I'm kinda excited for something that hasn't been talked about much - trade fleets. V2's magical "if a good is produced anyone in the market anywhere can buy it" economy always suffered from that particular weakness and I look forward to a world in which a naval arms race matters because you're trying as hard as you can to protect your trade fleets and raid those of your enemies in the event of war, and in which industry needs to be devoted to shipbuilding to increase the scope of your economy and bring in more imports while selling more exports.

I did the same and started with Wallachia for some reason. Russia bailed on me in my independence war because the UK was allied with the Ottomans, but I just barely squeaked by because they had a horrible tech game.

I really like the fact that certain techs can seriously impact power dynamics (machine gun), but I hope they have some time delay before they take full effect in Victoria 3. A little power spike that builds to represent a period of rollout, adaptation, and iteration might make sense, without burdening the player with gun variants or other HOI-ish details.

My most memorable game of Vicky 2 has to be playing the Swiss in a multiplayer game and managing to remain neutral in every single war over the game (except for the last 20 minutes to just see how powerful I was). I stayed a secondary power the whole game and had the highest prestige, and most educated population in the world and had the largest % of pops as craftsmen.

I was mostly playing sim city obviously, but in my test war with Italy at the end I crushed them,.

I think my favorite runs in V2 were my Bavaria -> Great Power -> Germany route where I had to massively invest in my art and culture to keep up my GP status, and play the balancing game in between Prussia and Austria; and my Punjab -> India game where I spent years developing and evading being sphered by Britain long enough to launch multiple wars against the British Raj in order to create a unified, Great Power India.

So I'll probably redo those!

After playing through a game of Vicky 2 what I'd really like in V3 is for ideology to play a larger role than simply deciding policies. I want to feel the threat of a communist or fascist league of countries and they should generally try to invade or at least hinder liberal countries.

I think many players do stuff like that and it’d be great if the AI did as well. At least on a basic level where they become more sympathetic towards countries with similar ideologies.

Yeah. And the ability to impose worker's paradises on the defeated decadent imperialist capitalist powers would have been a nice touch.

That playthrough was also fun because I backed socialist France and we got stomped by the coalition of UK, Germany, and Russia. In part because I'd focused entirely in industry and culture and let my military tech, esp army tech languish. After the humiliating peace I invested much more heavily in military tech and in the next great war USSA troops occupied London.

It'd better make some sense, not just be something that AI does. For example fighting to defend a country of your ideology or imposing a specific ideology on a country should make some of your POPs happier, maybe jingoists and those who like the ideology.

The only deciding factor for being a GP is "can you enforce your will on other countries"

gently caress "guess Brazil has the best painters so we have no choice but to sell them all the coal"

The US didn't suddenly start respecting Mexico's sovereignty because Frida Kahlo painted good.

Mexico lost all their prestige from losing to a bunch of yokels in Texas. They needed a lot more painters imo.

Also, cultural hegemony is a thing. If Mexico were to be a cultural phenomenon that had influence over the whole of Latin America because of their cultural output, would that not be a great power?

I mean, by those standards Rome and Greece were great powers right up to WW1.

I really appreciate that there's a way to stay relevant as a mid-sized country in V2 by pumping your prestige and the trade-off seems pretty obvious: you can pile up nice paintings but then a mid-sized power declares war on you, tears through your obsolete troops, and takes half your country in the peace deal.

Give me the libsoc commune socialist America. This is a natural extension of the Enlightenment ideals that underpin our government! Liberty is paramount, and liberty can only be achieved when want, debt, ignorance, and oppression are destroyed. And if these loving slavers want to try and create a definition of unalienable rights with a "BUT" in a yes/no question, then we'll just go ahead and create a definition of reality where they're all loving dead.

What I always had a lot of fun with, too, was trying to turn the Ottoman Empire around. It's doable, it's just also a lot of work, and you have to be constantly pointing sharp sticks at Russia, Austria, and Britain so they don't tear strips off your hide before you can get your population the nice things.

I think it's not supposed to be that nations will abstain from trade barriers, but that individual producers will want to sell their goods to prestigious places because people seeing their furniture or whatever in a museum will make them want to go buy similar items.
