Is there any ship thats really good for taking out xenon stations solo? I tried the Syn you get from the Terran storyline with plasma turrets and that works, but once the angry bees wake up I get swarmed really badly and cant do much about it. I miss X3 flak turrets... I have the XR ship modpack installed if any of those are especially good at it.

The Asgard would be the right ship for the job, the XL Laser is probably your highest DPS single weapon for killing a station ( you also get two main batteries ). Unmodded your only options for acquiring one is to either board one, or buy the blueprint from the Terran rep and build one yourself. There's a Workshop/Nexus mod that makes them buyable. The XL weapon is still reasonably short ranged ( around 8km from memory ) and the Asgard will still benefit from some anti fighter protection - when I was running the buyable Asgard mod I also took two Syn's as escort ( to be honest Osaka's would have been better as they have more M turrets ) to clear Savage Spur II. It's still a bit of a slog taking down a station ( the XL beam has a fairly hefty cooldown between shots ) but you're less likely to lose your escorts, and if you equip them with L Plasma turrets they'll make a meaningful contribution along with their main batteries. You'll only want a couple of them because too many gets into herding cat territory.

Whats the deal with unfinished / unbuilt Xenon defense stations being immortal? This was an issue in 2018 and still isnt fixed...

OwlFancier

They shouldn't be, generally they have an "invisible" (0% constructed) module that you need to blow up to get rid of them.

It is silly that they can just sit at 0% construction but it's sort of an unfortunate interaction of how the game renders module construction by spawning the module invisibly and slowly filling in bits of the textures as it completes, and presumably a reluctance to spawn them with 0HP in case your stations start construction while under attack from a fighter and they immediately pop the module and eat the resources.

I managed to destroy it somehow by letting my ships wail on it oos for 20 minutes. I have successfully vacated all xenon from Matrix 79B etc, are any of the systems particulary resource rich to build your own stations there?

Will the split rebuild after they have almost been wiped out?

The xenon have taken all but 3 sectors and I've finally got enough income and stuff going I think I can defend those ( mainly with absurd defence stations sitting on the gates)

They should. I've started defending their systems and their economy bounced back pretty quick. You can also help them by doing station building missions and building much bigger stations than they ask for.

What would happen if you attach spaceweed and other illegal productions to a requested station?

I once built a station for the Terrans that only met the bare minimum requirements and thus was literally 100% useless to them.

It still sits there, waiting endlessly for materials that will never arrive because it doesn't have storage space for it.

Good question. I'm incredibly boring and never thought of that.

It would probably run and ships leaving with spaceweed would get busted all the time.

It generally sells for a lot, but you need to do a bit of work to find buyers - you need to do the "black market" missions (that you get randomly from scanning the signal leaks on stations) that will unlock a buyer for illegal goods for that station only, and the amount they want is going to be pretty low (but they will pay a lot for it even at low quantities).

Is there a good (ideally written?) intro guide for this game? I liked Mount and Blade and Starsector, so this seems potentially pretty up my alley. For some reason I thought it was a literal 4x game.

That's pretty difficult since it's a real freeform game as well. As a start it's probably the best to just explore and fly around sectors looking for missions (if you fly through a sector and near stations you can keep checking the map screen for missions in the sector that are available)

Eventually you gotta pick what kind of way you want to follow to gain more money, but as a start its fine to just bumble around for a bit.

Yeah the thing to bear in mind about X4 is it's not really a difficult game, just slow. Being good at the game is more about being able to accomplish things faster rather than accomplish them period.

One newbie tip is that station defense missions are basically free money, since the station itself will do most of the work for you, so they are a good thing to grab when you are still flying around in your dinky starting ship and can't really run cargo or fight anything.

"Destory criminal traffic" ones are for the random unarmed civilian ships, too, not anything that'll fight back. And it seems to spawn more of them if you ahve the mission active.

Quick advice: I have X3:AP, I bounced off it a while ago but that was because I thought it was primarily a Freelancer/6DOF-fighter game, and didn't realize how much gameplay was industry/empire-building/hugeass logistics stuff, which is much more my jam. Should I just dive back into AP, or does X4 in 2021 have enough QoL fixes/improvements on the formula to be the unambiguously better experience?

Zereth

In my experience it's a lot easier to get into the empire building stuff in x4. Bun around doing easy missions until you can scrape up cash for a miner (which are more consistent money than a trader) which will start making you money on its own, then get another one, until you can start building your own station (which has a fairly low bar to entry since they're modular and can be built up over time as you get more money)

X4 is in a good place. I'd recommend starting with X4. The UI alone is a big upgrade.

A lot of what X3:AP does is straight better than X4 even now, but the problem is that everything you need to do to get to that stuff is drastically worse

Farnham's Legacy adds some neat stuff but at least at launch the economic sim was fundamentally broken (not even how X3 leaves holes for you to fill, just totally dead), Terran space (if you won the lottery to get the mission for it) was busted, and the dynamic relations were fun but made planning things a real hassle. I wonder if the recent patches made any economies kickstart

This is, admittedly, a driveby post only half relevant, but Avorion is basically the X series but you build your ships/stations/fighters out of blocks for those interested in that sort of thing.

I’ve played a fair bit of Avorion and it’s pretty fun but I seem to recall the economy side of things was weak compared to X. Shipbuilding is neat though

Couple of good ones so far:

  • Improved behaviour of station-based mining ships working for stations that require multiple resources.
  • Improved station-based traders to prevent them prioritising resources that are produced by their station even when those resources are in shortage.
  • Improved AI pathing to fly around hazardous regions where possible. (Related to FrickenMoron's post)
  • Improved range and force of container magnet for M, L and XL ships.
  • Quite a number of changes regarding AI ships shooting at boarding targets and simply not engaging

I think X4 is a much more playable game than X3AP just because the interface is much better and it looks much nicer, but it is still not a very good space fighter game IMO, in fact I might say X3 is better at that in some respects as it is much more high stakes in the dogfighting department. X4 is OK but I haven't entirely twigged with the unmodded fighter combat since X Rebirth tbh. So if you're still wanting something that's a space fighter game I don't know if you will like it?

If you do want a space economy simulator though I think X4 is pretty good at that, much more accessible and playable than X3 was in that regard, in most respects.
