Yeah same. So far the restrictions are too easy to meet, even if you are inefficient with your setup. You do get more money but like you said I always have more than enough money to get the new parts from the shop, which is the only place you can spend money. I totally agree, I think they should either tighten the restrictions so they are harder to meet, or at the very least institute a grading system where S is like, the most efficient possible setup. I do enjoy building space ships in it, and I like the humor in the dialogue sections, but it's definitely a slim game.

After playing some more the only the only ones gave me any trouble were the stealth ships where you needed to keep the whole ship on the cloaking field.

I think even some optional missions. Like keeping all the weapons pointing forward instead of randomly sticking out, or grouping the passenger sections together. Just little things to make it tougher.

Do you feel it, Zach?
My coffee warned me about it.

The original release of this game is older but it just got a PC release 2 days ago on the Epic Store and I picked it up: Grindstone

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tc7OYt4RDqA

It's a pretty cool take on the widely defined "combat match-3" genre so if you enjoyed games like You Must Build a Boat, Puzzle Quest or Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes then it might be right up your alley. The 'gems' are colored monsters and you're some kind of monster barbarian on a mission to kill as many of them as possible. The idea is that you can only kill one monster color at a time but if you kill 10 or more of them then the titular grindstone drops on the board and during your next attack you can continue killing monsters of different colors as long as you pick up a grindstone in-between. Enemies get more enraged the more attacks you complete and then more powerful monsters drop etc. The gameplay is about planning 'routes' through the enemy mob so that you can fulfill level requirements (X enemies killed), collect as much loot as possible and escape before the board becomes too hostile to navigagte through. There are various weapon, inventory and item unlocks, crafting, boss fights, gimmick levels, challenges that you can unlock at an inn and so on. The game art is a stand out as well.

I dig it and right now the game is on sale on Epic AND eligible for their free $10 coupon so you can get it for $5.

Grindstone is specifically a game in the puzzle sub-genre of "games like Dungeon Raid", the classic phone game from like a decade ago that has been made incompatible due to newer versions of iOS and Android. If you liked Dungeon Raid, oh boy, get ready to have a blast.

I suppose I should say it isn't 100% a Dungeon Raid clone. Instead of being able to start your turn on any tile, you control a little guy and you have to start the turn where he stands and move him around the board. I thought it was a neat twist though, and the game is big with lots of stuff to do.

Spent all day playing this. It feels like how LoopHero felt when you started unlocking poo poo everywhere and you just want to keep going till you lose 5 hours. You mine planets initially at a slow speed through rocks, to unlock more upgrades, to upgrade you workers, to upgrade your base and it all in turn affects your mining drill which is the meat of the game digging to the core of asteroids, moons, planets etc to gain resources to keep your upgrades going. You don't die, you don't lose, so i'm not sure how it's classed a roguelite. It's just a casual game that always gives you a sense of progress and goals you can meet for eternity. For the price, it's pretty fun. The drum and bass soundtrack was unexpectedly awesome.

I think the idea is that since your drill dies every time, leading to persistent upgrades, it VERY loosely classifies as a roguelite. I find that pretty stupid though and almost 100% marketing. Agreed on the soundtrack though, it's good although perhaps could use a few more tracks.

Rising Hell is coming out with the full version this week. I've been playing the early access version for a while and it's an awesome game and great time killer. It gets challenging without being too tense, the vertical levels are fun and the way the combat works is also cool, where you don't actually need to press a button to attack if you just move up or down into an enemy at the correct time. The pixel art is incredible and very vibrant with lots of bright colors, exactly what I love in pixel backgrounds, plus the guitar solo-heavy metal soundtrack is awesome.

You can still get the free demo, and the full game is under ten bucks right now as well. Watch a video of it to see what I mean, the art and general looks are excellent.

Rising Hell is amazing, I absolutely love it. Don't sleep on this one if you like roguelikes, pixel art, metal soundtracks, and/or challenging 2d action/bosses.

Just Die Already looks right up my alley, I haven't played it yet but it's releasing tomorrow. From the makers of Goat Simulator which I didn't love to play but was fun/funny to watch. Thinking of checking this one out because it looks more polished and just downright silly, good game to play with friends.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/979070/Just_Die_Already/

Didn't like this one. It's amusing for a little bit but it's way more empty than you'd expect. You can only interact with certain things in certain ways so I don't think they achieved their sandbox vision. It's temporarily amusing, and probably more fun with a few friends, but overall not compelling and a skip from me

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1519890/Tiny_Space_Academy/

This game is actually way more fun than I thought it would be. Building space ships is fun and harder than you'd think to get everything correct, then when the more complex missions start it is downright hard as gently caress. Not as complex as Kerbal Space Program, and takes place entirely in the 2d realm, but similarly difficult to get your crafts exactly where you want them. A good time waster with a lot more depth than I expected at first.

Main complaint is that the menu and controls are bad and don't have enough options for when you are building ships.

This game has a poo poo tutorial that doesn't explain anything that you need to know to be successful in the game, which really annoyed me. I think this is by design in Mind Scanners.
Once you've figured out the mini-games that's pretty much all there is to the game.
They never get harder and the game never really mixes them up much the status effects are dull and pointless.

Really disappointed with the game. It could have been a lot more.
Instead once you unlock the 8 or so mini-games that's pretty much it for the rest of the game, you just have to do more of them
It gets really boring when you have to take multiple days to cure a patient by doing the same three tasks 15 times.

Really, really good. Didn't want to stop playing this last night, probably played for at least 4 hours. This kind of game lives and dies on its story and this one has a great case at the center of it, and a great setting. I like the permanent saves, you can't go back and change things and it is legitimately possible to end up with a different situation depending on choices/your detective skills. I wouldn't call the detective work difficult but it does require some thought and sometimes calls for you to go back through old conversations and notes to figure out something exactly. Story whisks along at a fast pace, and has a mature (as in complex and political, not smeagol-bait) story with some light sci fi elements. I haven't finished it, so I don't know how long it is, but I hope there is plenty more game left and I'll be sad when it ends.

Impressive that this was made by such a small team, or even one person I can't remember. The animation is a bit of an issue, there just aren't tons of frames probably due to lack of resources. Seems like a pretty solid metroidvania though, you get used to it, and the theme of inner turmoil and the development of a bad memory into a phobia is quite interesting actually. Not an easy game, definitely some challenge in this one. Overall it's not great or anything, decent maybe.

The Only Current Steam Review posted:

Lets start with the objective stuff: The game has no video options, no way to put it into window mode or change resolution. Some of the text is not translated and still shows up as what I think is italian. The actual translation is readable, if wonky at times.

On the more "your mileage may vary" side, the game has little to no strategic depth. You slap three ingredients against each other until you get a potion via trial and error. Initially this is doable, having access to about 10 of them. But as early as reaching level 2, suddenly you have dozens upon dozens. The game does track for you if you already tried a combination, but there is simply no excitement into randomly mushing stuff together until it makes a viable potion.

Potion effects are unknown until you "taste" them. They have to be successfully tasted twice before you can confirm an effect. The success rate here depends on your taste skill. Tasting can result into you getting sick and losing the rest of your week. I was unable to confirm a single effect in about an hour of play, which also means having no idea what ingredient does what, adding a further point to the "You are playing as an alchemist that has literally no idea what shes doing".

All of this would be "okay", if not for the fact that you are not told what customers actually want. No, really. During sales, a customer walks up and the window shows potions applicable to their demand, but whether they reject it, buy it but dislike it, or buy and like it is not something you can viably track. I've had a full counter and shelves of about 8-10 different potion types. I was low on money and scheduled about 6 sales action in a row. I was able to sell exactly ONE potion out of the lot, with no idea what the other customers wanted. The game lets you "postpone" customers to come back next week, but if I have no idea what they want, how am I supposed to tell what to mix for them in the first place?

This is AFTER a lot of the tutorials not explaining certain things. What does getting intoxicated do? No idea until it happens, and even then the effect seems vague. No explanation on you being able to "Overschedule", and what that does. Apparently it has a random chance to make you lose workdays? The stats are not sufficiently explained either

The search continues...

Biomutant is a AA(?) game that I had my eye on for the last few weeks, it has a really cool colorful aesthetic with a world and characters that are full of life. The character creator looks cool too, your dude looks different based on your stat allocation, big and beefy with lots of strength, big head for big intelligence and uh, well I'm not sure what agility and charisma do but they do something.

I haven't actually played it because critical and Steam reviews are mixed. Critical reviews range from mediocre to good with common complaints being poor sound mixing, weightless combat, poor itemization and rewards for exploration. The narrator is also polarizing, with some loving him and others being annoyed. It does look beautiful though and I love the aesthetic, super colorful and varied, cute animal people. At $60, I'm waiting for a sale or at least for improvements. The dev does seem to be looking into some of the issues like the sound mixing which should improve the feel of combat since a lot of people complained that the weapon effects sound meh. There's still a lot of people enjoying it too so I think it'll be worth playing at some point. At the very least, my kid would probably like it since he's a fan of any game where he can run around in 3rd person in fun environments.

Solasta is a very true to rules D&D 5e game, uses the SRD 5.1 rulset so it doesnt have every class/subclass but what's there is good. It has decent graphics, a meh story, but a really good and fun D&D5e combat system going on. If you like dungeon crawling and tactical combat, you'll like it.

its also out on game-pass today.

Isle of Siptah is a massive expansion to the open world survival game Conan Exiles, featuring a vast new island to explore, huge and vile new creatures to slay, new building sets and a host of new features. Fight the elder races in new underground dungeons. Defeat demonic monstrosities that spawn from a storm of pure chaos. Dominate the surge to capture powerful thralls summoned from the mainland.

You arrive at the island shipwrecked and alone. With nothing but the scraps on your back, you craft the tools you need to survive. At first a simple camp and some crude stone tools, with time a fortress and brutal greatswords made from hardened steel or obsidian.

Your eyes are drawn towards the center of the island, where a dark tower looms above the landscape. The violent storm that swirls around it seems to gather strength and unspeakable horrors stalk within. But your most dangerous foe may be the other survivors on the island, as resources are scarce and the fight for survival is savage and brutal.

Start a fresh, new experience on the massive Isle of Siptah. Explore sun-drenched beaches strewn with shipwrecks, dense and tall Redwood forests, broad valleys dotted with ancient Acheronian ruins, a resettled Stygian colony, ominous camps overrun with pirates and the foreboding Tower of Siptah at the island’s center.

Huh, it has the release date as today. Maybe since you were already playing the game you were technically in the beta?

Either way, I am a little curious about this game. Is it good? What's it all about? I remember a Conan game somewhat recently but I thought it was single player and apparently impossibly hard.

Yeah, I guess it was Early Access or something. Weird.

The game is fun enough. I haven’t played a ton, but I’ve enjoyed fiddling in the world. The main quest line isn’t much to speak of.

A - a new EDF game but it's lego blocks and for a younger audience? I'm tentatively interested!

It also has switching between the four classes ala Samurai Warriors, which is a very good fit for EDF I think

Saying that the English language wasn't supported is what stood out to me. You don't see that very often. It does look like a cool game though so hopefully the English is coming as OP said

Tainted Grail: Conquest
Also there's a big new expansion for Conan: Exiles

I've been playing this over the weekend, and I think it's quite good if you like roguelite deckbuilders. There's an overworld you run around in between battles, and a home base you build up, and some quests that persist between sessions -- like someone will ask you to do something and you can complete it over the course of several runs and then that person will join your town and sell you stuff, things like that. There's also a ton of classes that you unlock that all have their own decks (with some shared cards) and play differently. There's the starting class whose gimmick is lasting long enough to get a big special attack, then so far I've unlocked a summoner who summons and activates monsters to block damage and attack for him, an archer class that is all about drawing a ton of low damage zero cost arrow cards, and a sentinel that gets a ton of block and does more damage the longer he can go without taking damage. There's a total of nine classes, so I still have five I haven't seen yet.

It's also pretty nice looking for one of these games, instead of just cards battling it out like some of these, there's animated 3D monsters that look cool.

If I have any small complaints, its that the classes don't seem all that well balanced -- some seem just straight up better than others -- and the game is really hard starting out since the opening class kind of sucks comparatively. But overall I'm having a good time with it. I did get it for free since I was on the Kickstarter for the board game it's based on, but for $20 ($18 right now on sale), I think it'd be worth it for anyone that likes these kind of games.

Do you like The Witness, Antichamber, or Fez?

Then maybe, Sensorium is for you! It's a very small puzzle game (between 5 and 7 hours I'd estimate) made essentially as a labor of love inspired by those games and others in the "puzzle island" genre. The premise is that you have one section for each of the five traditional senses.

The game's biggest strength in my opinion is that each of the sense sections lasts around exactly how long it should (and always culminates in a puzzle that feels like it tops off that section) Between all of the sections there are also some "logic gate" puzzles that interact with the five senses in different ways. Generally, it's a really nicely crafted little experience, with almost everything you come to expect from the genre including interesting secrets and easter eggs.

The game is an indie puzzle game made nearly entirely by one person, so it can be a bit rough around the edges at times, but that's part of the charm. It's closer on the spectrum to the Antichamber side than the Fez or Witness side (which were both very, very highly polished) The person who made it did it in his spare time and released it with little fanfare or marketing. I highly recommend you check it out. Especially right now, when it's just :fivecbux:. I really think it deserves more eyes than it has had on it so this post is essentially me doing my part.

One last thing... have a notepad ready, or some easy digital method to very quickly take screenshots and notes. It's not necessary at all times, but it makes things WAY easier.

Second endorsement here, Sensorium is a great game. It's got the standard "solve all the puzzles related to this mechanic" kind of thing that the Witness has, but it does also have an ur-puzzle that requires you to get out of bounds/mix together multiple senses/solve THAT GOD drat PIANO PUZZLE in order to really "beat" the game. There's a lot going on and it's a lot of fun.
