Prunus Girl has room for different interpretations. Trans girl, nb and cis are all perfectly valid reads on the story depending on your viewpoint. It's a bit messy in that way

It's also really good regardless

Yeah part of that is that the character basically refuses to be pinned down as any one gender.

If anyone's fine with reading a 1 million word completed quest based on Bleach that's so much more gay (and in a way that ties into the story's themes) and focuses on a group of characters who got screwed over in the original story and fleshes them out in a way that blows the original out of the water, I highly recommend Now You Feel Like Number None:
https://forums.sufficientvelocity.com/threads/now-you-feel-like-number-none-bleach-arrancar-quest.37531/
Story only:

So, if I watched like a dozen episodes of Bleach and then dropped it with a resounding "meh", but liked the basic concept and setting, would this be interesting to me? Or do you have to have gotten much more into the original to appreciate it?

This is definitely the work for you then. Number None improves upon the original in a number of ways but retains the cool concepts and setting.

Number None freely tosses out large chunks of existing lore and changes pre-story canon outcomes as it likes anyway.

I never watched Bleach but I enjoyed it immensely anyway. From what other Bleach fans have said it treats the concepts and settings from canon with more respect than the original.

To be fair it's mostly the much-maligned Thousand Year Blood War arc stuff that gets tossed out, and some elements are still used from that anyway.

Seconding Number None. I found it through the bleach thread, which led me to a couple other popular quests on Sufficient Velocity and Space Battles (Puella Magi Adfligo Systema and the Communication Quests respectively if you want to know. Don't go into those expecting the same sort of rep however).

OK I finished Lady in Mystery, 10/10, greatest VN ever.

Honestly a lot of it is just designed to appeal to me so I got too much bias. 1. Its about lesbians 2. Its mystery themed 3. I love disguise motifs in stories. While my favorite is prince and the pauper stuff, women disguising themselves as men in historical fiction is pretty high up there.

The TL is roughhhh in places, so expect that. Also the mysteries are something you are more of a passive observer to, don't expect something like umineko where the game is going to challenge you to do your own detective work. And there are some tone issues, and one route feels like its from an entirely different vn at the end.

It made me smile a lot. And all the love interests are nearly as equally as charming, I would have a hard time saying my favorite.

I mean just look at this, Woman disguised as a male detective x Woman disguised as a male thief~ Wow! What more do you want!

If you hate it don't blame me! It was literally created just for me.

I love it! 10/10!!! Lesbians!

https://dynasty-scans.com/series/an_absurd_relationship
https://dynasty-scans.com/series/office_romance_womens_division

autobio comic about a lesbian lady

im going to use this an excuse to recommend vampiress lord, the #1 vampire yuri

for gender stuff The Witch's Servant And The Demon Lords Horns is a thread favorite though it has a bit of a weird start. i mostly read goofy comedy stuff not really rooted in reality when it comes to trans themes, but himegoto: juukyuusai no seifuku and yuureitou are both very problematic and heavy works that have elements of that I love, though, not going to be for everybody.

the flowers games are also good lesbian vns, first one's a bit weak but the second one is a solid story about two girls who just kind of hang out and slowly realize they like each other in a very awkward but natural way and the third game is about a huge lesbian who has depression because catholicism's relationship with lesbianism is weird and she doesn't think any of her friends would like her if they knew she was a lesbian (half of her friends are lesbians)

differnet people have different experiences with depression?

Endorph

https://dynasty-scans.com/series/so_do_you_want_to_go_out_or also wanna go out is a seriously good college-aged lesbian thing about two women who get together because they're lesbians more than any kind of spark, and the push-and-pull of them legitimately liking and caring about each other but having different needs, compulsory heterosexuality, the idea that maybe they're just desperate, etc. it's also very funny sometimes so dont think its just a bummer or anything. highly recommend it, also recommend supporting the official english release (as 'how do we relationship?' for some reason) if you do wind up liking it.

also given is a pretty good gay dude anime if you want some variety. good sound design since its aobut musicians, and the main romance works well. havent read the og manga though.

i guess i mean the depression stuff is somewhat relatable but like less in a "wow she really understands it and this makes me feel less alone in the world way" and more of a "this makes me really sad for her" way. even with the optimistic tone towards the end of each of her works (that i've read anyway idk about the most recent one) it just makes me really hope she can find or has found more of a support network to help her manage just being alive better. i don't really find it that uplifting or funny at all, it's just so raw and uncomfortable.

i'm glad other people can get something out of it though i guess

Endorph
Jul 22, 2009

some people get a lot out of work that makes them feel raw and uncomfortable. i dont meant that in a dismissive way but like, in a sense finding something that has barely any catharsis and is just a collection of bad things that happen with no real rhyme or reason can be comforting, because that is how a lot of people experience life, especially with depression or mental illness. which is a bummer but also not untrue. finding art that explores that feeling is rare, because closure is so standard a part of storytelling that even most autobiographical works try to fit the events into some kind of narrative with a firm conclusion. Even tragedy has a sort of closure to it. Finding something that utterly lacks that element is more true to life for some people, which helps them feel like they're not alone. That sort of storytelling is so prevalent, even in real world depictions of mental illness, that never managing to fit some sort of arc into your struggle with mental illness makes people feel like they're broken. So a depiction of mental illness that goes 'you might just be hosed, but you're alive.' is comforting, in the sense that they don't have to shoehorn their battles with it into that kind of pattern.

Like some people just never get a support network. They live, they manage, but they never have that moment where they feel like they've found a place they can belong, or whatever, there's no moment where they get noticeably better. That's just what life is like sometimes.

Theres nothing wrong with saying why you don't like something imo, though it was a bit dismissive to throw in "I guess" at the end.

I think Endorphs post was somewhat interesting as someone who likes stuff like that but never thought much about why, and she wouldn't have had much reason to make it if she wasn't responding to the other person.

He's the current arc's villain's son, who idolises a dude his dad killed like a million years ago and wants to be exactly like him, to the point of disowning his dad and deciding to help the heroes.

What's funny is that everyone on the villains' side treats him like a man, no question, so they're 100% accepting of him being a dude. Just, you know, not of him helping the heroes.

I like to picture how the conversation went down, actually :allears:

Yamato: "Dad I'm not a girl I want to be a boy."
Kaidou: "That's okay, son."
Yamato: "More specifically, Kozuki Oden."
Kaidou: "you WHAT"
