I highly recommend the Garmin watches. They're excellent. I've had a Vivoactive 3 and now an Instinct Solar, and loved both of them (vivoactive ate it in a bike crash :( )

And if you can get a screaming deal on a non-solar Instinct grab it. I'm talking like less than $100 at this point.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the Amazfit GTR2e? I last tried a smart watch in 2018, but it never really clicked. I want to try again, mainly for sleep tracking and just message notifications. I don't need something super complicated. I'd been eyeing that one and the Garmin Venu or Vivoactive

I just bought and returned an Amazfit GTR2e. It's a really slick looking watch but if you turn on any of the sensors related to sleep tracking the battery life takes a giant poo poo. Like 10% of the battery used in one 8hour sleep. If you want better battery life, you have to turn off advanced tracking options for sleep that meant no sleep stage sensing - something my dying Vivoactive 3 did on release day. For a watch that touts weeks of battery life under heavy use and over a month with basic use, this was hugely disappointing. Also the Zepp app SUCKS - the data is there and reasonably easy to get to but if you need to configure anything on your watch none of the settings are intuitive to the point I thought the options were moving around between menus each time I tried to change something. It was that bad.

I ended up upgrading to the Venu. It's everything I wanted out of the GTR2e with the same (actual, not advertised) battery life and Garmin Connect is an infinitely more useable app for configuring the watch as well as accessing health/fitness data. Big downside though was that the cost was 2x the GTR2e, but with both watches I got what I paid for.

Hey guys, I'm in the market for a new smartwatch/activity tracker. I bought a Fitbit Charge 3 in 2019, but the display stopped working after barely a year, and last month the strap broke, which was the last straw. I did like the design and the actual tracking it did. The app is fine, too.

What would you currently recommend that is similar to it, but with better hardware that won't break after a year? Basic tracking like steps and heart rate, app integration, sturdy but with a simple design and not too big. Low to medium price class. Preferably not made by Fitbit. Thanks for any suggestions.

My sister has one, she's pretty satisfied. You apparently need a third party application, if you want in-depth details about what it tracks, because Xiaomi's stock app is kept too simple. I think she's using "Notify for Mi Band".

I'm sad we didn't get a tease of the one plus watch this morning at their presser. But it seems likely that something will appear on the 23rd.

Also all these rumours about Samsung dropping their next batch of watches in Q2 is very interesting as well cos the active really looks like a great watch.

Whether the Apple Watch is reliable enough is a question, with what it sits on the wrist and can move a lot.

Facebook's ad service has been pestering me with this one for whatever reason: https://getwellue.com/pages/o2ring-oxygen-monitor

Ideally, blood oxygen saturation should be measured by shining red and IR light through a finger, not by reflecting it. Which this ring device above appears to do.

There are actual FDA certified medical products for this situation is this is a legitimate medical concern, she needs to be talking to her doctor about these concerns, not Something Awful.

"I just love beeting off"

I've been holding off getting a smartwatch since basically forever (last couple of years it has been waiting for the new Qualcomm chip to come out for a WearOS, either the next decent Fossil or the ever rumoured Pixel Watch) but have been getting a lot of people pushing me towards getting a proper fitness tracker. Currently I use my phone to track runs and monitor sleep. For the latter it's a bit awkward as it's on the bed, for the former it's fine and works well with Strava but I guess not having a phone strapped to my arm could be nicer.

Garmins look good, the Vivo 4 and the Instinct both seem to tick all the boxes and my understanding from looking at them is the Vivo 4 is a swish looking smartwatch that works well as a fitness tracker while the Instinct is a more bare bones, rugged and longer lasting option. Do these need a phone paired to them or would they be realistic options to play podcasts/music through headphones without one on a run? Will they integrate with Strava for run tracking? Will either of them function as a smartwatch i.e. decent pay integration, able to check messages, store digital tickets/store cards? (it looks like the Vivo is a maybe and the Instinct is, well, barebones).

I've gotten some idea of the difference from online browsing but some first hand experience would really help, especially with how well they pair up with an Android phone (will there be frequent frustration over apps not matching between devices, etc).

Garmin has also just dropped the Venu 2 which is the closest they've gotten to a traditional smart watch and from all the reviews Ive read seems to fix most of the problems people had with the venu 1.

Get a fingertip pulse oximeter, they're like 20 bucks. The Apple Watch is absolutely not a medical device and shouldn't be treated like one, not to mention being hundreds of times more expensive than the medical devices it claims to emulate.

I’m using a Garmin Instinct after being saddened after years of lovely Fitbit hardware dying after 13 months (except my Charge 2, that thing refuses to die). I really like the Garmin hardware, great for my tracking activities but holy hell is the sleep tracking awful. Was looking at sleep last night and it was like 2 hours longer than I was actually asleep for and marked an hour of me being awake as “REM sleep”.

Does the Garmin sleep tracking get any better on their newer hardware with more sensors? The Fitbit stuff was miles ahead of Garmin on this, heck my old Microsoft Band was better.

The Venu 2 I have seems really bang on with sleep stuff and overall does a really good job at the automatic tracking.

The Instinct and venu 2 have the exact same sensor on the back. The sleep tracking wouldn't be any different.

Probably not a wearables specific question, but my Fitbit Inspire HR takes some fiddling to get charging and I think it's because of dirt/sweat on the pogo pin spots on the back of the device. Any good way to clean those? I tried alcohol and a q-tip, which didn't help much.

I've been incredibly happy with mine after a month. Sure, it could be a bit smarter, but only having to charge it once a week or so even tracking a handful of workouts is A+. If they bring in some slightly more granular notification controls it'll be perfect.

just got my fitbit luxe today. upgraded from an inspire hr.

i think the lack of physical button is going to be super annoying, and the new color screen is... fine? the actual display only takes up ~half the face of the device with huge empty spaces on the top and bottom of the display.

it's super disappointing that the default clock face is the only one that really takes advantage of the new color display and all the others are lacking in some capacity. if it's anything like the inspire hr, which i also got early in its life cycle, fitbit will literally never produce new clock faces for this device or update the existing ones.

swiping around the interface is so sensitive that even the slightest flick is going to send you past 2 menu items each time.

the pro is that it's probably the sleekest screen-based wearable on the market (someone correct me if i'm wrong) and that's really i wanted out of it, i just wish it also had more to offer in the experience aside from being a nicer looking device.

Are there any body metrics wearables that give you complete control over your metrics? I'm interested more in sleep tracking than fitness, but both would be nice. The oura is out bc you can't turn off the cloud backup, also they seem to be moving their business to a 'track all your employees' model. It seems like most smart watches similarly insist on google/apple backups? I am willing to pay more for a device that let's me sync my data directly to my phone/pc and that alone.

Alternatively if there's a decent way to sandbox a device so it thinks it's backing up, that could work too.

I think you may be able to parse Garmin's data manually, but..
why tho.

Also Re sleep tracking: there is still no evidence that commercially available fitness wearables are reliable or accurate for sleep tracking.

There is some evidence to suggest that fitness wearables can cause or worsen Sleep Anxiety and Orthorexic behaviors.

I dropped my Withings Steel HR Sport today and either the screen or the crown that activates it stopped working. I messaged their support to see what they have to say about it, but I'm already preparing to having to buy a new watch / health tracker.

I'd prefer a hybrid watch over a smartwatch (and ideally wear a mechanical watch and a screenless health tracker bracelet/wristband, of the kind that doesn't seem to exist), but I'd also prefer going full smartwatch over a poorly looking hybrid watch.

I don't care about music or making calls, am ambivalent about payments and sleep tracking, but activity and heart rate tracking with neutral/subdued looks are important.

I use both Apple and Android (work and private phones), but the phone I take to the gym is an Android.

Thoughts:

- Withings Scanwatch - Quite pricey, but if it looks more like a watch than the Steel HR Sport does, I'd be fine with that. I don't hate the app, although maybe I should.

- Garmin Vivoactive 4 - Also pricey (locally), but I dpn't have an opinion otherwise.
- Garmin Venu 2 - Intriguing, but a bit too expensive.
- Garmin Venu SQ - Looks like a good compromise between cost, features and looks.
- Amazfit GTR2/GTS2 - About the same price as Venu SQ where I am and the specs look very good on paper.
- Apple Watch SE - More expensive and I slightly hesitate to get yet another Apple device.
- Fitbit Versa 3 - Going back over the thread, it seems opinions are souring on Fitbit, but I don't have an opinion otherwise.

Fossil (and Skagen and probably their other subsidiaries) make some decent hybrids. E-ink display under mechanical hands, nowhere near as precisely fitness-focused as the list you had but they do cover the basics like HR+step with notification readouts and complications/data widgets. Plenty of low key style options and easy to find under $200 (often under 150).

I like them for the convenience of reading incoming texts/calls and having a watch with several and bonus functions. The HR and step counter stuff is more of a neat trivia thing than a workout helper for me since my job's pretty active. Battery life is at least ten days per charge.

The only two screenless devices I’m aware of are the Oura ring and the WHOOP band.

The Oura ring is primarily a sleep and recovery tracking device.

The WHOOP band is somewhere between the Oura ring and an Apple Watch.

I own both - had the Oura ring for a couple years and it’s a solid device. I bought a WHOOP out of curiosity. So far I’m impressed - the recovery coaching on it has been pretty excellent IMO.

Biggest drawback is WHOOP is a monthly fee thing. Meaning you don’t buy the device, you’re paying for a membership. If they release a new device, you get it for free.
