 Ore ga Omae o Mamoru is a DS Metroidvania...ish game released in 2009. As you might have gathered from that title, it was only released in Japan. The finished translation patch I'll be using for this LP was released on May 25 2021 and can be found here. It's been releasing piecemeal for a while now, though. I won't be talking about the quality of the translation much (mostly) since it's fine. Pretty good, not perfect. Mostly Not immediately obvious from the title screen is that this is technically an otome game. It was published by Otomate Forte who focus mainly on otome games that are not visual novels. This game starts with about 20 minutes of cutscenes. Also the gameplay is... kinda hard at times! I'm not the best at action platformer stuff but this game is very difficult early on. It eases up eventually but the first couple hours are very poorly balanced. It also spikes way up occasionally. It's not so much a difficulty curve as it is a difficulty seismogram. I don't normally mention it, but this will be primarily a screenshot LP (as usual) but with additional videos sometimes for dungeon delving bits here and there. The core gameplay loop really would not be fun to watch in its entirety. Plus, did I mention the 20 minutes of cutscenes? Prologue Into the Ruins The First Layer The Inescapable Labyrinth...? So, this looks interesting, but help me out here a little, op. First of all, I have no idea what an Otome is. You did intrigue me with the Metroidvania part, but what's the selling point of the game beyond that? So far, it looks glacially paced and extremely derivative - in setting, art, and gameplay (you compare it to Monster Hunter, Etrian Odyssey and of course Metroidvanias, but is it more tan just a pastiche?). What's so cool about the game that you decided to LP it, and why did fans translate it?

It looks closer to the Phoenician alphabet, a little touch of the Greek one, it's too simple for cueniform syllabic though. The candelabras are also an interesting fashion statement.

it's the darndest thing, really. our protagonist is just so good at killin' that he instinctively stabs towards weak points, designed to bypass the skeleton and hit vital organs, killing instantly ...unfortunately, his enemies are just skeletons, so that means he just stabs the air inside their ribcage. whoops.

Everything is idealized and dreamy and fantastical. It's marketed towards girls/young women who daydream about what romance is like, so the men all tend to be very pretty and fit into roles like "the bad boy who is secretly very caring", "the flirt", "the stoic one", and "the eccentric one." Then there's a sub-category called Josei, which tends to be marketed towards adult women. The story tends to be a bit heavier or denser than otome and romances are more grounded in reality. They also tend to have more sex, but it's not as though otome games shy away from that entirely." In short, one of the reasons why I Will Protect You stands out and was likely picked up by fans for localization is because it's an Otome title that has actual gameplay to it (Metroidvania gameplay, no less). Otome is a niche genre within a niche genre in the West and the only real English publisher of it is Aksys, who mainly focus on localizing Otomate's games. So that's why our protagonist looks very effeminate and refuses to wear a shirt under his cape. I was thinking it was copying the same styles of the first 4 metroid-vanias on the GBA and PSX where they always had a white-haired effeminate-looking main character.

Bit of both, I suppose. Most boss fights I'll put in the effort to do it intentionally where I can, but for everything else I'm mostly just going with the first take. Some of it is just straight up luck, though.
