Sci-fi movies and shows have advanced technologies but they use it very stupidly. They really need to maybe not be so dumb. In Star Wars, why isn’t everyone using lightsabers for everything? Door locked when you’re storming a base on Endor? Cut through it with your pocket saber. No escape path from the trash compactor? Lightsaber your way out of there. Your dad being a real dick and cutting your hand off? Next time don’t crawl out on ledges, idiot. Not really a lightsaber situation, but you get it. And what’s this manually aimed lasers nonsense? Clearly no one can hit anything, especially storm troopers. An astromech droid with a blaster attached to its head can probably take out the whole empire. Better send two just in case. Also the lasers on your fighter ship don’t have to point forward. They can point anywhere. They can rotate. You don’t even need a pod chair to aim them, you can have a computer do it much better than your Jedi reflexes can. In fact, get the humans out of the fighters, we have droids that can do that and handle much higher G’s than puny humans. Sci-fi writers are hacks with few exceptions who don’t consider how anything would be used in real life

In Dune, apparently shooting a laser at a shield makes both sides explode, so everyone uses swords like cavemen. They never thought of setting up a laser gun on a tripod and firing it remotely. The person that comes up with this would be the new emperor.

In most scifi worlds they fail to mention any advanced milking technologies which I find highly improbable. Still requiring a human partner to milk me in the year 2077? Yeah right

My favourite sci-fi thing is that you have like "normal" sci-fi I guess and then "hard" sci-fi. But to make all the space travel stuff happen and poo poo the hard sci-fi just uses theoretical stuff that doesn't exist, just has a name in the real world. I dunno, I think it's pretty funny people getting bent out of shape what name and vague reason they use for faster than light travel. gently caress it, call it microcosmexpanding or something, it doesn't matter. In conclusion, sci-fi is one of my favourite genres.

Why would anyone beam down to any planet without a pocket shield emitter that can save you from taking a disrupter blast to the chest. Or better, just use your big screen tv to zoom and enhance whatever it is on the surface you need to see. Absolutely no reason to have "boots on the ground". Are forcefields/ray shields plot armor? Seems like using those solve every possible issue with space danger including, but not limited to lightsabers.

According to the tng technical manual, which tng adhered to for the most part, a hand phaser on setting sixteen can explosively vapourise half a kilometre cubed of solid rock. the reason for the type 3 phaser rifles is because they have a larger power source. Presumably the phaser rifles can just blast over a kilometre So in DS9 when they are fighting in the trenches, why dont they just crank it up to 16 and blast the entire other people to poo poo and call it a day

Just take generic patriotic movies like the sniper one, replace all guns with laser guns and give everyone a dumb uniform. It's now sci-fi, you're welcome.

We have advanced technology that we use stupidly in real life right now, just look at Tesla. I’m more concerned about this new wave of nerds that grew up reading wookiepedia who thinks a sci-fi story is dumb because the weapons don’t work with “real-life” military doctrine they learnt from ww2 documentary’s. It’s the equivalent of complaining that people don’t act rationally in horror movies Like no, the Rise of Skywalker wasn’t bad because the “logical” thing to do was to have a anti star fighter escort ship to protect their fleet of star destoryers.

All the sci-fi shows now have holographic floating displays, which look like they'd be absolutely terrible to use because you can see through them. Just spending all day getting horrible eye strain because you're focusing on a little floating word two feet in front of your face trying to ignore all the people walking by your desk just behind it. Your floating display is capable of making opaque things, there's no reason you can't put a solid background on all the windows.

The Management posted:And what’s this manually aimed lasers nonsense? Clearly no one can hit anything, especially storm troopers. To be fair I'd say the stormtroopers being absolutely terrible is mostly just a Jedi thing and it has been flanderized from there, what we see of them in IV and V is basically just some brief running firefights as they chase the heroes and really no body has amazing accuracy. poo poo, the first Star Wars movie has a line which outright says that the blasters are clumsy and random, and it's very much in evidence in the shootouts we do see in that movie, where everyone's accuracy appears to be pretty terrible and there's a whole shitload of smoke. It also shows the blasters to be incredibly destructive, direct hits basically fry people (Greedo, Luke's aunt and uncle I assume), can destroy huge vehicles (the sandcrawler) and blast apart obstacles sending fragments and debris everywhere, in fact I'd bet that most of the blaster kills we see in the first movie aren't from direct hits. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNoCDvJpmPU&t=63s I've always felt it's a shame that the sequels and subsequent media deviated from this and essentially just made them normal guns that shoot lasers for the most part. That's probably too many words about that.
