In the early 80s there was this semi-joke political movement in Texas calling to build a fence around the whole state. Of course, it was never done, but the sentiment never went entirely away, either. In the mid-00s, when the idea of a whole border wall was still mostly a fringe proposal just bubbling up from its roots in the fascist Minuteman Project into the larger political consciousness, there was a survey of Texans that found 20% support for a border wall between Texas and Mexico. But in that same survey, there was 12% support for a border wall around the whole state.
