I watched the first two episodes of Kevin Can gently caress Himself and honestly I’m pretty unimpressed. The social commentary was good and Murphy is excellent of course but after that there’s really nothing there. I don’t really know what the actual premise is, or how it’s going to sustain a series. There’s no sense of how the plot‘s going to develop beyond “sitcom wife is unhappy!”, and that’s really thin.

Also it is definitely not a comedy. Like it’s pretty much a straight drama and the majority of the multicam jokes are deliberately bad so not actually funny. None of this bothers me, but I felt I should bring it up given how annoyed people get about shows billed as comedies that have very few jokes.

Re: Mare of Easttown and The Killing,

How do these shows compare to the various 1 season Netflix Harlan Coben mysteries? The Five, The Stranger, Safe, The Woods? I watched the first 3 but haven't watched The Woods yet, however I love those single season mysteries to death, probably my favorite genre of television period.

The mystery side of Mare is mixed, but the character work is incredible. I haven’t seen any of the Netflix shows you’ve mentioned to compare, though.

What about... hmm.. Broadchurch? The Fall? Unforgotten? Wow I've watched a lot of this poo poo. I think "Collateral" is the one I liked the least.

Season 3 of The Killing is legit a great standalone one-season crime drama, which doesn't require any knowledge of the first two season. It's a pity that the rambling plot of the first two seasons turned so many people off the show that barely anyone watched it.

Yeah season three was great. Season one would have been great if it had actually wrapped up at the end of the season instead of dragging it to season two.

I'm still finding I, Sniper on Vice really good, but my original thoughts of how I don't really need a 10 episode docuseries about one subject to be dragged out over the course of nearly 3 months are still ringing true. I wish I'd kept it until I could binge them over the course of a few days. The episodes just don't differentiate enough as it is, and it hurts it.

Wait we're talking about shows to watch after Mare of Easttown and not mentioning Happy Valley? It's maybe the best of the "complicated cop investigates sexually violent offender" shows that were everywhere in the 2010s. Not a false note struck, never tries to make the criminals more complicated or smart than they are without ever downplaying the harm they can inflict. Maybe a perfect show.

Mare of Easttown is probably most directly comparable, both in character work (both writing and acting) and the quality of the mystery, to the first season of Broadchurch.

It was extremely good yeah. Second episode less so but maybe watching them back to back was just too stressful for me. A lot of anxiety between the two of them.

On that note, Amazon is doing a special on Channels for Prime and you can get AMC+ (along with others) for 0.99/month for two months.

I'm probably going to add Epix to catch up on a few things and maybe I'll burn through some stuff on AMC+ too (which has a ton of Shudder and Sundance content.)

Really? Mare of Easttown is so derivative of Happy Valley that it makes my teeth ache. The leads are basically identical.

Yeah, that's the one. Okay to good first season, Eve Myles doing high camp in the second, and porn makes you a rapist in the third.

National Geographic's Mega Hammerhead documentary delivered on its promise of showing entertaining hammerhead facts and conservation. The only annoying thing is that it was clearly made for TV, not streaming, because they keep coming back from a commercial break and reviewing for people who just flipped the channel, and half the time they do, they play this misleading "It's headed right for you! Get out of the water!" clip, and later when they get to it in the actual show, it's about swimmers who were nearby when a hammerhead was hunting a stingray, and it was curving away and back to its prey, not toward the diver, though it was still pretty important they get out of the water with one that close.

First I've ever seen it used that way... how is it even meant to be said? Bow like the egyptian ranged weapon? Bow like the once lil Bow Wow? Bow like the gesture you make your enemies and subordinates do before addressing you to maintain the sociopolitical hierarchy?

Even worse here is in the sentence after they use "bowed" again, but in the way humans normally use that word, to say it's exiting something. That or they're intetionally doing some wordplay, which seems like cheating since they decided to use a made-up unclear definition of bow to make that wordplay even be.

Reading it in that context made me think it originated from nautical sense. Like is that a thing, launching a boat is 'bowing' it?

Also going back a bit, I rewatched Dirk Gently a couple of months ago and agree 100% with everything said. I would love some more but gently caress Max Landis. I love the aesthetics and performances in that version so much I can't bring myself to even try the Stephen Mangan version.

If you lot like mysteries Top of the Lake was good until the last episode. Still glad I watched it. Elizabeth Moss was great.

And I'm def not recommending The Killing, it was bad enough that the watch thread very quickly turned into a mock thread. But I'm not that much into the genre, outside of things like True Detective S1 and so forth, so maybe take a bit of salt with that.

Looking it up now, I'm shocked that Broadchurch season 1 was in 2013. For some reason I had it as being a decade or so earlier. But I suppose it makes sense given like half the cast were on Doctor Who.

Prepare for a bit of choppiness in S1 as the aired order was messed around with a bit to get things moving quicker and gain an audience. I don’t think it was ever rectified for dvd/streaming so some plot points don’t make sense (from memory Dave has his van in an episode before he buys it etc).

And yes, great show and still missed.
