yeah i need to reiterate, japanese people would see aerith's japanese name and see 'earth.' because the sounds are 90% the same. the game is made by japanese people.

aeris is *further* away from the original intent. if your problem is aerith doesnt sound like earth, then it should be made to be closer to earth, not kept as aeris. what im saying is she should have been renamed eartha.

The interesting tidbit related to that is the two started in the design cycle as one character, but Tifa got spun out to spread some character roles around.

More demos...

Tiny Thor - Decent platformer. Nice pixel art for sure, I think the music is by the Turrican composer as well. It's nice to have a conventional platformer where you just get from start to end of levels. Not everything has to be a roguelite or whatever. But of course idiots on Steam tagged it with METROIDVANIA because anything that you jump in is a metroidvania now! Cliff edge detection could be a little more generous, IMO.

Spirit of the Island - I might give this another chance later but it feels a bit early in development compared to Sandrock. The demo build was 0.10 so... probably at least a year and a half from really getting meat on the bones.

Rog & Roll - Oh I like the 2.5D pixel look of this, it reminds me of those "3D NES" emulators that push the tiles out... except this is consciously (and thoughtfully) designed instead of just duplicating tiles to make cubes. Moveset is fine. Unfortunately I'm dealing with bad lag bursts over Steam Link so I can't give a full review, but it seems cute.

Labyrinth City - I like the art of this but I was disappointed that you don't really have free movement. You are sort of locked to rails and move along a track, at which point you deviate at intersections. Very confused by that because it doesn't seem intuitive or fun.

Moons of Darsalon - So... this is a really interesting game, and I love the Donkey Kong Country-esque aesthetic... but it's not the kind of game I generally get into. Escort stuff has never been my favorite, unless it's something like Abe's Odyssey (or the hidden gem My Rabbits Are Gone) where it's tile-by-tile. I think that if you like that sort of thing though, you should definitely check this out.

Little Witch in the Woods - It looks like this could potentially be a cute take on games like graveyard keeper, the demo has a really long prologue though where you aren't really engaging with the general gameplay loop. Also it launched in 4:3 because of my cintiq being the primary monitor and the game has no settings menu to change the resolution/fullscreen. I'll maybe come back to this one later to give it a fair judgement.

Kitaria Fables - Oh hello! Where did you come from, Rune Factory with Cat? This is still an indie effort so it doesn't have the ambition of an actual Rune Factory game (a good comparison would be how Earthlock is an imitation of PS2 JRPGs), but still, highly polished, nails the PS2 look, is focused on going out and killing monsters first and farming second... my one criticism is that the demo doesn't really get into the real meat of the gameplay loop. Also, it doesn't look like you'll have a workshop of your own to craft from. Instead you have to go to vendors to craft. Also, items in your chest are not counted in your inventory when you talk to vendors or craft, which is going to be a big pain in the rear end in the full game for sure.

Rainbow Billy - I should theoretically like this... it's got a little 3d platforming, it has 'color a b&w world' premise, a weird conversational battle system... It's just that the villain character says multiple times "You can't escape REALITY!" and there are little npcs called "positive thoughts" and this is gonna be one of those games where it's like 'Ohh turns out you were dying of a horrible illness all along and you have to accept your fate' isn't it. Or it'll be like "oh you're a kid whose parents are terrible and you have trauma you are escaping from!!" I just am tired of stories with twists like that. But also it launched in 4:3 and had no graphic options. So that bothered me more. If it turns out there's no such twist then it's all good.

Okinawa Rush - Whoa... this is very janky but cool. An arcade-style tribute to Kung Fu Master/Vigilante but with more conventional platforming design, and a full fighting game moveset. Lots of enemies come at you, but you're a whirling dervish of punches, kicks and fireballs. Cool stuff.

Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.
I kinda liked the Lake demo. It's exactly what you'd expect from the trailer and E3 clips.

My worry is that the set up seems like one of those paint-by-numbers Hallmark movies (or whatever those movies are that my mom seems to watch nonstop when I'm back home for christmas), where the lady from the big city is stuck spending a few weeks in a small town and you already know the rest.

I'll be disappointed if that's all it is, but I'm also still happy to see more kinds of more mundane stories and gameplay getting explored in games.

Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.
I also really liked the Carrier Command 2 demo. I really dig the style and the complexity of the gameplay, though it really seems more geared for multiplayer than solo play (I'm not sure if the demo even supported multiplayer, but I only played solo). I wasn't expecting being able to run all over the ship, and I wonder if that'll factor into the gameplay at all later on or if it's just for fun.

Some of the pieces did seem a little obtuse (how exactly to capture islands and how to set up supply chains, for example), but hopefully those will be better explained in later versions.

Seems promising all around, though.

"There's not much in the way of plot/narrative (magic hosed the world, gotta get one last spell off to destroy all magic forever) but i've played 20hrs of The Last Spell over the last week and have been having a great time.

Definitely smaller scale (your early runs will only have 3 characters, up to 6 a bit later) and it's also a rogue-lite so you're expected to lose and spend metacurrency to improve future runs. "Classes" are defined by the weapon a character has equipped, so if you don't like a particular skillset you can just buy a new weapon and have a new set of skills/abilities.

You're defending your mages for a number of nights while they channel the spell so you build shops and defenses around the city during the day to keep the hordes out while deploying your characters at night to engage in FF Tactics style grid/turn based strategy. Still in Early Access so it's a little rough around the edges but I've really enjoyed what I've played, plus the music is awesome and the pixel-art animations and sound effects really sell the combat. I dont have much to add to the above posters, but I absolutely adore this game. If you're just there for the combat and are the kind of person who plays xcom on max difficulty, Wildermyth will probably be too easy to hold your attention. But the procedurally generated storytelling is great and the legacy feature keeps me replaying it over and over. I've spent many hours on this during quarantine.

Oh man, I reinstalled Nioh because I felt like playing a souls-y game and never got around to finishing it. I played for a few hours, had some fun, but ultimately found the area I was in kind of tedious and frustrating. I remember hearing that the polish really starts to wear off near the end of the game, and I had a good 30-35 hours invested over a year, so I figured the crummy and frustrating mission I was on was one of the last ones.

Then I checked the walkthrough and holy poo poo- I was on the battle of Sekigahara, which seems to be only halfway through the game. It wasn't bad, most of what I took issue with was the high degree of lethality combined with low enemy variety, but I still had a frustrating enough experience with it that I'm morbidly curious how much worse it got.

Nioh actually gets better the further you go. Sekigahara is when it really kicks into high gear.

Nioh 2 improves in Nioh 1 in almost every way if you're into the game but just want a little more polish and enemy variety.
