Kabaneri went to poo poo the instant Bibi appeared two thirds of the way in and derailed everything. That show would've been AOTY 2016 if he never existed. The movie at least redeemed the franchise.

I have bad news, from someone who read the LNs in the Rokka thread:

Xy Hapu posted:

STUPID LN SPOILER DON'T READ: Adlet was brainwashed somehow?? by a fiend general into thinking he likes Fremie for the purpose of loving up her trust issues even more for reasons?? So he's basically been manipulated this entire time into manipulating Fremie into liking him when he really doesn't, presumably so that the author can masturbate as he writes the scene where she finds out and has a full emo mental breakdown. As far as I can tell that's where the translations end so who knows how stupidly that will be resolved. I am guessing that there will be yet another ~*crazy reveal*~ where it turns out Fremie is the vessel for the demon king or some poo poo and they needed her to really hate humans in order for her to turn into the demon king, then I guess later Adlet turns her back with the power of love and then the series ends. There are also more nuggets of greatness you can find scattered throughout the rokka wiki such as the fact that cow girl can resurrect dead people a fact which I am 100% sure will never be used to create cheap, ultimately hollow drama.

I assumed we were talking about all anime endings (not just anime-original ones) and comparing the endings to the beginnings (not the middles).

Come to think of it, there's a lot of anime with a promising beginning that the middle doesn't really live up to, but has a decent enough ending in the context of the middle. Aldnoah Zero, for instance.

Listen, Kabaneri is AOTS simply for that one ripped engineer they spent like half an episode’s budget animating.

I mean, there's a lot of daylight between "The ending made the show" and "The ending ruined everything."

For example, I didn't mention Dynazenon as a great ending, but it was rock solid and left the show on a good note. It just wasn't as good as the show could be in its best moments. Nothing wrong with that. It's just that some shows did even better. (And other shows set expectations so low at the start that even a bad ending was a shocking improvement.)

i dont even know how to categorize wegg cause it literally feels like the first episode was written by someone entirely different from the rest of the series. but i can't say the other work from that writer i've experienced was very coherent either really

"Hi Everybody!"
The Vivy finale was pretty so-so for me. Broad strokes, it was pretty good, but the way it ends is pretty bad considering it's exactly the future they were trying to prevent where animosity for Androids should by all rights skyrocket after they went Kill All The Humans. You can't infer the poo poo shown onscreen was planetwide and then walk it back afterwards with a death toll that would absolutely be in the millions on a global scale. I feel it could've gone better nudged back a day further with the ticking clock being towards the start of the rampage rather than satellites falling on everything.

Also, you just can't do a thirty-minute countdown on-screen getting to zero accompanied by three minutes of singing, that's not how anything works. :cripes:

Overall it's still a really good series, albeit one let down by an odd set of decisions in the ending that feel wholly arbitrary.

there's some good characters and some good individual episodes but it rapidly loses any focus on the strongest elements of the first ep, meanders a bunch, backtracks on the first ep's lesbian undertones as hard as it possibly can, starts introducing a ton of extremely stupid sci-fi conspiracies, and dedicates a third of its runtime to setting up a plot point that it then goes 'actually, we AREN'T doing that plot point! fooled you, huh? aren't we smart?' about. and also every bad guy is just a weird sex monster that yells about how much they like doing sexual assaults and then the girl gets to go 'actually, sexual assault... is bad!!' usually after a vivid recounting and sometimes flashback to said sexual assault. and also it has an ep where it tries to be supportive about a trans dude but A) it still does the sexual assault thing and B) every other character who is at all involved in the magical girl stuff is, well, a girl, and the show specifically talks about 'girls suicides' as the common thread connecting everything.

there's a lot i like in it but i sure wish the stuff i like was in like, a good show

the writer's good at dialogue and striking lines about social issues, but hes mistaken pithiness for having like, deep insight into literally all aspects of society and thus that gives him the go ahead to indulge all his worst impulses, basically.

What even was the ending of Rokka? I watched it ages ago and I vaguely recollect that I mostly liked it and that the ending wasn't bad enough to spoil that general feeling? But, all I can remember about the ending is that the girl with bunny ears that could summon swords and was set up as the friend/romantic interest of main protagonist in the beginning turned out to be the traitor working with demons all along and after that got resolved, they found one more corpse which implied that she wasn't the only fake chosen/possible traitor, (also that whole stuff with the obviously suspect half-demon girl being actually innocent and pretty cool and basically a girlfriend of the main protagonist by the end) and that's about it, so I'm almost certainly forgetting stuff.

After they figure out who the real traitor is and escape the trap they're stuck in, another seventh member of the Six Heroes shows up and goes 'hey guys what's going on, did I miss anything'. Roll credits. I found it more amusing than annoying, but a lot of folks were extremely mad about it.

Iirc, they actually made the President a little less busty than in the Manga. And yeah, she's basically a nudist/exhibitionist, recognizing that her body is an asset and also art-worthy. She's like an aspect of Senpai, in that she's all about Art for the Sake of Art.

They seem to have changed the rivalry between Nagatoro and Pres a bit so that Senpai has more agency.

I was surprised they decided to cap the season off with the Art Club competition, but I'm retrospect it makes sense since it not only prompts that incredibly cute exchange where Senpai asks Nagatoro to be his model, but also gave the animators an excuse for the schmaltzy memory scene with Nagatoro bring earnest.

There's a callback to the thing about Art requiring love that is incredibly fun, so I can't wait for the next episode, though I'm overall bummed that there won't be more Toro-antics for a while. :(

Ah right, so I misremembered, it was another Hero, not a corpse. Honestly, it is a pretty dumb way to end the anime, but it wasn't even bad enough to spoil the ending itself for me, much less the entire series.

The latest episode made a number of changes to make Senpai more assertive and less self-defeating. Notably a couple instances of him still being wishy-washy about how he can't possibly win (but will try anyway) were removed, and instead of having him try to catch Nagatoro falling out of a tree (and failing, causing her to land on him) he actually does manage to stop her from falling into the pool until she freaks out and drags him in.

In hindsight it makes perfect sense to end on the Art Club competition, since that was basically the first time Nagatoro and Senpai's relationship really peaked in the manga. It should let the anime go out on a strong "yeah, they're going to end up together eventually" note, which is a good way to end when you're not confirmed for a 2nd season yet.

I think Rokka was way more fun to watch because of the thread interaction, like I probably wouldn't have stuck with it except for watching it as a group like that. I was not happy with how it ended at all though, and while it didn't retroactively suck all the fun out of the experience of watching it, it did tank how I felt about the show as a whole and I certainly had no interest after that in any sort of continuation.

The sequel hook in the ending is just really easy to point to because up to that point it was a show that was very sincere about itself, and that stinger at the end is incredibly insincere. It stinks!
