We can play the safe route and note that Nanashi did a series of vanilla NaruHina books right before Nagatoro. The spiritual path to romcom opened up at that time.

If anything the growing trend in some circles to a more "puritanical" fandom is way more worrying and way more of a smoking gun

yeah this is something I hope we can avoid here at least, it really sucks the way some people in fandoms think that "I don't like this / it makes me uncomfy" is a good reason to harass artists into closing their accounts (or worse)

Going back to that “good endings” list, as much as I love Giant Robo I’m not sure if the ending really works. It closes one arc but hints at a much great conflict involving Big Fire’s leader and then they never got the green light to continue that story.

Xam’d is another that started really interesting and got weird at the end. I don’t remember enjoying the second half.

To make a long-story short, :same:

To engage in a little wall-of-text-y dumbassitude for which I am unfortunately known for: I quit F/GO, FEH and Genshin during the week starting on May 3rd, 2021 for many a reason (mostly for the first two):
  • They started to feel like another job.
  • Some of the grindier aspects had begun to take its toll.
  • Being a mostly F2Player (I did buy the beginner's package for FEH that included a 5-star Bow-Knight Lyn with it), some of the PVP aspects started to feel like a steep hill to climb.
Mind you, I had played F/GO for over a year and I had returned to FEH and had been playing it for 7 or 8 months by that time, so for those it kinda felt like my interest "fizzled out" after a while. Genshin, though? I had played that for maybe a couple of months (started on late March, so maybe like a little over a month? I dunno I fight for my friends and I'm dumb :guitar:) and, like, I know there are dumbass players of all sorts for all fandoms/communities, but holy bastard son of gently caress the amount of harassment that a not-small-chunk of the Genshin Impact community pile onto some artists was on a whole 'nother level.

With FEH and F/GO, it was kind of a decision I took and meditated upon. Like I went to bed on the Saturday Night of May 1st and even talked to my wife about it a couple of days/maybe a whole week before I uninstalled both after I clocked out of work that Monday. I kinda felt a little sad, because I was planning to commission an artist to draw my staple team on FEH (B!Alm, B!Edelgard, Balldigan and B!Camilla, for those who care) and maybe one for my fave Gilgamesh in F/GO too. For Genshin Impact, tho'? I was on Pixiv and I was seeing some super rad Kaeya art and I was like this close to hoping I could remotely smack some fools for harassing/calling an artist names. It was probably the most "gently caress it!" decision I had made in all of 2021 when I chose to quit Genshin like two days after quitting the 2 aforementioned games. Especially because it wasn't a standalone thing, whether on twitter, reddit, pixiv or any other place of that ilk, the loving zeal of some fans to just behave worse than loving anti-fans kinda made me go "gently caress every second of that, I quit". So I did. And now I no longer play any mobage aside from stuff on my Vita, my 3DS or my Switch.

Anyway, yeah.

it's an extremely complete story, multiple characters have complete well defined arcs and development. Like yeah there are future mysteries but nobody is really left hanging character wise.

It's a fine enough game but not really enough to go out of your way for. It has the advantage of being an actual game as compared to many other mobages, though. The puritanical anti fans are by far a minority that you never have to interact with, though they are very weird. You can find plenty of fan stuff of all stripes without ever seeing them.

Speaking of the originals, from what I can tell the TV series and OVA are standalone but is there any particular order they should be watched?

I’d say do the OVA first before the original TV series - there's less characters and differences in the plot that aren't carried over to the TV series. Personally I find the TV series more enjoyable, the entire first half of it is good character development. Also the OVA is way more fanservicey. Spoiler example but the plot of one episode has the girls in a volleyball match against the boys school (which doesn't exist in the TV canon). Their outfits are really skimpy in a plan to distract the boys. The joke is it does not work because reasons.
A negative point towards the TV series is the last two or three episodes have a plot point coming from so out of left field it's from the next stadium over. It's hit or miss, it was definitely a miss for me the first time I watched due to the sheer WTF factor. Now I just laugh.

Watch Nomad.

I said this in the Nomad thread, but the latest episode just emphasized it. This show has a problem at the moment, and I don't know that it'll manage to land well despite it in the last episode.

In the original Ashita no Joe, there was a kind of divine madness to the boxers, something that carried forward to the first season of Megalobox. Joe and Rikiishi were driven by this sense of necessity, fighting and dying (well, maybe dying in Joe's case. It was really unclear.) because something drove them to destroy themselves for a cause they could barely explain to themselves, let alone to anyone else. They were more and less than the normal people around them, and their tragedies carried more than a little whiff of inevitability.

These were Boxers. These were men whose glory was in the very things that would destroy them. This is how they burned themselves until there was nothing but pure, white ash.

And that setup lead into the twist of Megalobox's ending in a way that worked, at least for me. Joe and Yuri managed to break away from their grand narrative, managed to satisfy that self-destructive death urge at the heart of the world, and they were able to be human at the end. That's why Joe's last scene worked. Unlike Joe Yabuki, Gearless Joe could walk away.

Season 2, at the start, was about a fall and Joe clawing his way back to humanity and companionship. We saw his tragedy, we saw how he started to be lifted out, both by his own hard work and the struggles of others. Well and good.

But now he's better. There's nothing driving him, no endless roaring need that he could die in the pursuit of and feel satisfied. He came home, and he's pretty much done with boxing. The latest episode did the same thing for Mac, pulling him back home after he went away. This last fight isn't driven by two people with burning passion. It's a kind of "Eh, I guess" arrangement, with the real risk coming from an AI maybe going crazy rather than from the decisions of the protagonists.

Might all come together in the end, but that combined with the fairly cardboard villain has left me disappointed in the last act of Nomad so far.

I'm loving Nomad. Vivy was great even if the ending leaves some major questions unanswered and wasn't quite the thoughtful scifi I was hoping it would be. Spider is largely a disappointment for me but at least it motivated me to read the LNs, Shadows House is cool, Thunderbolt Fantasy continues to be the epic wuxia fantasy I've always wanted; 86 is awesome. I guess My Hero Aca is still my weekly shonen? Some of the other anime not mentioned like Super Cub I'll probably binge/revisit later.

As for gacha games I've basically stopped playing on my Japanese FGO account and Arknights because I just don't really have the time; I'm continuing my NA FGO account but mainly only because it has enough focus on its story continuing the Nasuverse that I think aside from occasional spurts of effort to get the "free" servants I'm largely done with it. It gives me something to do while on my exercise bike.

I just am tired from not being able to make productive headway on my personal projects outside of work and felt like I really needed to cut out stuff in order to make time for stuff I think is really important.
