I wonder if it really is impossible to moderate effectively or what. I'm assuming that even if people got banned from Steam Community they would just make another account since there's not really any roadblocks there.

But it's one of those things where you have to put in the effort to build a culture where it's socially unacceptable to post like a shitlord and I don't know how many people Valve would have to hire to moderate the mess that is steam discussion.

From the corporate view:

* The forums are a complaint department. You put them out there to contain the worst gamer bitching about your product, in one nice, neat, easy-to-ignore place. If you really want to be engaged, you throw some poor community manager to them once a month to pretend like you give a poo poo what they have to say. No actual developer will do this more than once.

* Moderation teams are a cost center. Their only tangible benefit is preventing your forum nazis from literally posting child porn or organizing lynch mobs in your disposable complaint department. Spend as little on them as possible.

* Building a gamer culture that doesn't suck poo poo is only a consideration if your executives have the slightest bit of empathy and have ever even looked at a forum, played an online game, or spoken to a consumer of their products. Unrealistic.

* Nazi money spends just as well as normal person money. Better, really, because they will rabidly defend even your worst products as long as they can mod in swastikas or whatever gets them going.

* As far as anyone can tell, the existence of virulent Nazis on the forums is mostly not deterring anyone else from buying your products. So why stop them?

I think many people have a bit of a skewed perspective on steam forums.

If you stick to indie games, the communities are pretty chill. At most you might see (somewhat) heated discussion about a min-max strategy or a certain gameplay strategy.

Popular multiplayer games will always have a lot of toxicity, at the very least because they have a significant population of teenage edgelords who have nothing better to do.

In the region where I grew up, most multiplayer gaming was done in internet cafes before the widespread availability of broadband (late 2000s / early 2010s). Those places could get pretty intense if you were playing during peak hours as a team.

Those were the days. Now you have to write a long preface explaining you really, really love the third Reich before saying something inflammatory like "sometimes I think that Hitler may have not been that good of a person".

God yes. My favorite internet cafe story was when this group of girls were playing CS vs some younger boys (all high school age). The boys started trash talking, being super misogynist and angry that girls were beating them. Then the girls' boyfriends showed up, and confronted the boys to make them stop, which culminated in one of the boys actually yelling, "hit me! My dad's a lawyer! He'll sue you!" before the employees finally ejected them.

Half the people are wheraboos for whom historical accuracy means that they can run around with SS avatars and skins but crucially not that anyone may give them poo poo for it or that they have to deal with the historical weaknesses of their 1945 underground-slave-built wat machines that tended to explode on the tarmac.

It's amazing how much the losing side of that war gets fetishized. Whenever I run into a game or community that deals with WW2, even in tangent, there's at least one wehraboo with the Rommel pfp and/or the iron crosses. Putting aside the elephant-in-the-room of Nazism, they seem to fully embrace the aesthetic and rhetorical trappings of a military dictatorship (efficiency! discipline! glossy black uniforms and crisp salutes!). There's also a fair bit of nerding out on Third Reich war machines, both actual and theoretical.

Funnily enough, both of those glorified aspects arguably helped Germany lose the war. Top-down control by a fascist strongman led to major strategic blunders both in the air campaign over Britain and the eastern front, as Hitler put more stock in his gut feelings and the opinions of sycophants than those of career professionals. And the emphasis on prototyping bigger and better war machines led to over-engineered, hard-to-manufacture designs at a time when the Russians were assembling so many T-34s that they were running out of trained tank crews.

Anyhow, I find wehraboos about as off-putting as the people who glorify the confederacy and, unfortunately, any gaming community that deals with either of those conflicts will be chock full of them.

To be fair, they did have some hilariously ridiculous ideas for what constituted a "good" tank. Lots of weight! Slow as poo poo! Can't maneuver worth a drat but hits like a truck! What do you mean the allied tanks move faster than our turrets can traverse?

If it isn't heavier than a city block and mounting main guns based off of artillery pieces, can you really even call it a tank?

I discovered Stirring Abyss a few months ago, some sort of X-COM: Terror From the Deep meets Call of Cthulhu. Tiny indie game, published by Slitherine. Someone started a thread to pool up player feedback/suggestions, and someone else dared requesting female crew in all positions, not just science officers as currently. You can imagine how that went. And of course, it involved historical accuracy. I mean, we know from reliable sources that there were no female crew when a sunken US submarine discovered Cthulhu...

Hahaha, this would never fly where I grew up. The notion of suing someone was just not something that came up.

You either fought or you tried to deescalate/apologize (and be prepared to get called a pussy).

We did once invite the girls from our class to the internet cafe (this was just before puberty). They said something along on the lines of "Is this it, are we just going to watch you guys play CS?" We were like "Yeah!" and then they left.

Fast forward a few years and you can bet your rear end the situation would have played out completely differently.

Why promise it and then spend weeks procrastinating? Like, take 2 minutes and film yourself next to a newspaper, post it on Twitter, done. Is there supposed to be something super special about this video?

Maybe Sandi is the one in charge of the SQ42 teaser...

It's the only one I can think of that acts like a pyramid scheme, blocks off super expensive purchases until you have spent way too much money, and has the players actively defend multi-hundred/thousand dollar purchases.

Adult games sometimes do patreon, with stuff like "give me $2 a month for the latest version of my game", modders tend to do it for free, and the World of War* people can buy their $60 packs every so often but it's still a working game and they can play with their SS army vehicles immediately.

Every community sucks, some suck more or less... but you always get those people. :)

Being female gamers and expecting equality is a huge mixed bag of nuts that usually ends poorly.

You basically just have to get used to playing the brown haired male protagonist with snarky wit and charm.

Though a lot of games are definitely moving in a more welcoming environment where you can be male or female.

The only problem that will probably not be solved any time soon is the majority of those games are still written by males. So ultimately you have a female just repeating the same script lines the male already has. So you look female but all your actions and words are usually pretty male feeling and unemotional. But we're improving at least.
