bitcoins disappearing is kinda tricky to evaluate - there's no external driver for any given price of bitcoin (except maybe some temporary limits imposed by cost to mine 1), so it's hard to say why the number in circulation decreasing would have an impact at all.

Like company shares pay a dividend in dollars, demand for even minor currencies is generated from taxes and real economic activity, used plastic bottles can be deposited in those recycling machines. Drugs and other sorts of crime are the closest, but I suspect that's all actually done in local currency with very short lived exposure to BTC, if it hasn't already moved to stablecoins

from my perspective, the fixed supply of bitcoin is relevant mostly to its ability to be a currency, not its status as a speculative asset. like in a hypothetical world where bitcoin was used as a currency to finance projects and pay people it’s clearly unworkable because of its inherent deflation. at this point already 90% of the bitcoin supply has been distributed. if it’s used as a serious medium of exchange, what happens as it covers increasingly more economic activity? the “cost” of bitcoin goes higher and nobody would bother investing any.

but as a speculative asset the fixed supply is not unheard of. if you just want to hold it to sell it to someone else later to make a buck maybe it doesn’t matter as much.

Hackers are investing in each other’s operations—just like VCs invest in startups

quote:

Over the past few years, ransomware operations have become increasingly sophisticated as they shake down everyday internet users, giant corporations, and government agencies for ransoms that can sometimes total in the millions of dollars. Now, according to the cybersecurity firm LIFARS, the underground world of ransomware is essentially developing its own venture capital ecosystem, with ransomware attackers pooling their funds to back new criminal operations in exchange for a cut of future earnings.
No crypto, no ransomware.
