Your brokebrain sin is absolved...go and shitpost no more!

Twenty minute trip report: the Legos game has a chill vibe, cute storytelling of a parent and kid going camping, and nice graphics. The gameplay of moving around, and building with, the bricks is neat; it is intuitive and even just a few minutes in they've done some neat things mechanically to build up from "remember when you played with blocks as a kid?" into more videogame-y stuff.

The graphics do seem to chug a bit if I crank the settings up too high, even though my computer hits the "recommended" specs. You will want to crank the settings as high as is tolerable though, because the game is extremely pretty.

Phantom Abyss looks kind of interesting, although one issue I see is that there is basically no reason to rush through a certain level. Logic dictates that the person who first conquers a certain temple will be one who takes their time and goes slowly to avoid mistakes. Which isn't the most exciting gameplay, generally. Still, a neat idea.

quote:

Phantom Abyss is a massive asynchronous multiplayer game that casts players into procedurally-generated temples and tasks them with retrieving the sacred relics hidden within deadly chambers. Intrepid adventurers will dodge scores of hidden traps, leap treacherous chasms, and flee relentless guardians through branching paths until one of the relics are claimed or the devices of death overwhelm them. Be warned, you only get one attempt at each temple and failure or settling for a lesser relic means you will never see that temple again...

The cleverest players will use the phantom runs of failed attempts from other players to their advantage and avoid the missteps and mistakes that led to their doom. Once the legendary relic at the bottom of each temple is found, the temple goes away forever and becomes the priceless trophy of the skilled adventurer.

I've been playing Phantom Abyss for a couple of days now, and it's fun and addictive. Mirror's Edge meets Indiana Jones.

I thought it'd stress me out. I HATE being chased and want take my time finding secrets in games. This has a Spelunky ghost (or Resident Evil Mr.X) that pressures you to keep the pace up. It still worked out for me though. The movement controls are a bit floaty, but also so versatile that you can traverse the levels any way you want. It comes together to make a really rewarding loop where you bounce around to find treasures while dodging traps and the things chasing you.

Mind, I haven't gone to the hardest parts yet. They appear to be much more intense with more aggro chasers and more elaborate traps.

You start seeing familiar level segments pretty soon, though that works in its favor. There's a time trial feeling to it once you're familiar with a place and can rush through, picking up all the treasures. You don't really need to be fast. It's just fun to go fast.

The one negative thing I have to say is there's a bug that often disconnects you when you finish a run, resulting in you losing all the stuff you found. It sounds like they'll have it fixed in a few days. Maybe wait until then before picking it up. It's still alright with the bug, but it breaks progression.

Ah! That makes sense and definitely addresses one of the concerns I had. I'd rather move fast and die more than move slowly and die less, especially in a first person parkour thing the sensation of speed is kinda crucial.

Yeah I agree. Haven't finished it yet, but I will say that so far the puzzles do not strain the braincase. This is a very chill game in every way including difficulty. Not to say that you won't occasionally have to get rid of what you've built and start over to try it again.

This one is really nice. Absolutely gorgeous with the oil-painting type look, interesting puzzle platforming, vague but intriguing story without any words. The spear mechanics are the unique part and they work amazingly well to come up with all kinds of puzzles and unique areas. Looks great and plays great. 11.69 right now which seems very fair.

I like this a lot too, although if you aren't interested in just taking in the art and the hilarious little details then you probably won't like it. You essentially just navigate through crazy mazes with tons of fun details, chasing a man who has a magic stone that can create a maze out of anything. There are collectible items hidden throughout each level, although you can also just go straight for the end. It actually can get hard occasionally when the way forward is less than clear. I wasn't familiar with the artist but it is really gorgeous.

Super Magbot is a level-based platformer with the really fun mechanic of having two magnetic types, which either attract or repel from panels on the floor, walls and ceilings. Gameplay is good though, pretty tough but once you nail it most levels can be over in under 10 or 20 seconds.

I'm 21 hours in to Spellcaster University, and I don't recommend buying it. It's extremely grindy. The loop is draw a card, build a room or enhancement, wait for points to accumulate so you can draw another card. Periodically you get a popup letting you choose more students. Somewhat more periodically you get a popup that some faction or other wants you do do something, and your choices are controlled either by which cards you have or by how many points you have. At some point -- normally after you have committed to several classes -- the skull of the previous headmaster tells you that you have to pick some classes to specialize in, or in some overall magic category.

Very rarely, you get an interesting minigame where you're assembling a force of students to storm a dungeon. You pick the students, then decide whether to fight each battle or run. That's the major strategic part of the game, and it's a pity it's randomly triggered.

Note: There are magic categories (Nature, Arcane, that sort of thing) and then magic classes within those categories (herbalism, druidry, and that sort of thing). You can assign groups of students ("houses") priorities by category, but not by class.

The fundamental campaign is that you play four (five?) I forget individual schools and try to achieve bonuses by training the right sorts of wizard. Each school closes when the counter toward the Dark Lord's winning is reached. At that point you abandon the school and start afresh, with none of the advantages of the previous level. Each time you start a new school you have to take a deficit (students are slower, teachers are worse) and may take a bonus spellbook if you achieved any of the previous level's objectives.

At the last school, you are told that there are specific objectives you will have to reach in order to win, but what the objectives are only show up during gameplay.

The art and animation are really fun; it's nifty watching the wizards walk around, take classes, and occasionally get turned into pumpkins. The objectives are frequently annoying. For instance, when you get the "which classes to specialize in" popup, one choice may be to graduate midwives, meaning that you need to get students to specialize in Sacred magic, Heroic magic, and Herbalist magic. The problem is that Sacred and Heroic are subclasses of Light, and Herbalism is a subclass of Nature. This means that if, say, you got a card for Druidry and started that class, some of your Nature students are going to go take Druidry when they should be taking Herbalism. It's a matter of chance.

So. Most of the time you're a passive passenger watching students walk around and occasionally turn into pumpkins. This pales.

New games:

Sun Haven is releasing in Early Access. A fantasy farming/life/romance type game with three different worlds (not sure if they are all in there now) and 7 races. Haven't played this one, not generally my thing.

quote:

Build your farm and relationships with townsfolk, or forge ahead on a quest of magic, monsters, and dragons. Level up through a skill tree in 8 person multiplayer, or adventure solo!

You’ve just arrived in Sun Haven, a medieval town full of people from all walks of life doing their best to make their beloved town thrive as it once did. As a farmer, miner, fisher, warrior, craftsman, and even a mage, you’ll find that adventure awaits you here. Your hard work will let you upgrade your farm, restore shops in Sun Haven, and even bring in new neighbors! As you bring the hustle and bustle back to town, the EXP you earn from each quest will help you level up to advance through a main questline journey. The main quest itself takes you through two captivating towns outside of Sun Haven. The mythical Elven town of Nel’Vari rests deep in the forest where the Elves live in balance with nature. The rumored monster city of Withergate features a bustling nightlife that never ends - literally - since the city is covered in neverending darkness. Your experience in these places will grow your skills dramatically, but how you focus that growth is entirely up to you. If you prefer a sword in hand, then slash away by all means. But if a watering can is more your style, then there are nonviolent alternatives to overcome dangerous encounters - even with the final boss! Either way, it’s up to you to wield your abilities and become the hero of your own story.

Loopindex is a puzzle game where you control two robots and can loop commands, albeit in a very basic way. Played a few levels and seems like a pretty decent puzzler, apparently it has over 70 levels which is neat. Could also be fun to play with a friend but I don't have those.

quote:

It's time to explore the virtual land of Loopindex!

Its vast, uncharted lands are full of puzzles to solve! Play alone, or team up with a robo-friend, and use logic and timing to clear each area. The difficulty will test your ingenuity as you explore the unique “loop mechanic” at the core of the gameplay loop. You’ll take on levels full of traps and discovery, befriend virtual creatures, and even battle against cool bosses.

Curved Space is a pretty interesting little action shooter where you control a small craft that hovers on surfaces and so can be on the top, bottom, side etc. of structures like asteroids or space stations. Do combat with various kinds of space spiders in what seems so far to be a branching storyline where you choose your timeline. A good number of different weapons, some very unique, and a unique lashing and dashing mechanic. Camera was really bothering me in this one as it pointed down too much and I couldn't see far enough ahead, but increasing the field of view and camera height helped a ton.

quote:

Curved Space is an intense arcade-style twin-stick shooter that takes the classic formula and plunges it into the weirdest reaches of space. Battle cosmic space-invading spiders across curved landscapes where bullets hug the terrain while the horizon drops sharply out of sight.

Inspired by arcade classics, players will have to hunt for weapon power-ups and upgrades while dodging enemy fire, blasting interdimensional bugs, and wrangling some enormous boss monsters. Simple to learn as you fight your way through the branching story-driven campaign, but tough to master as you chase the glory of the leaderboards.

Phantom Abyss fixed its disconnection problems today. I highly recommend it to anyone who's into first person platforming. Spelunk through temples, get chased by temple guardians, steal relics. Good times. The game hits a point where you have all the unlocks and there's no incentive to keep playing, but it's a fun ride all the way there.

It's cool how it incorporates the ghost-runs of anyone who's died in a given temple too. They become time trial ghosts like from racing games. They'll interact with temple traps, which can both screw you over or help you, and you should try outrunning them to loot chests before they open them.

It looks like a turn-based roguelike except that when you bump into enemies, you're put into an Earthbound/Undertale style rhythm battle, where you select an attack and then have to get the timing right to execute it. And press space at the right moments to scan enemies.

The aesthetics are killer, the game is WEIRD and I don't even know how to evaluate it, it's like it came from another planet. I really like it!

Does anyone know what the completion condition is for the quest in the beginning to "Pass your EIRINet Trial?" I've run a bunch of missions and it hasn't completed yet, and I don't see any way to look up what the goals of it actually are.
