If you're at a hotel without a reservation and the hotel clerk asks you the name on your reservation, if you mumble your answer incoherently each time, the hotel clerk HAS to give you a free room or access to a stranger's room.

Just that. Motherfuckers keep rolling up without a reservation or even the ability to tell me their loving names! And it's not because of a disability, even, they can speak perfectly clearly, except when giving me the name on their "reservation." Are you here to see your buddy? Cool! I love visiting my buddy at a hotel so I bet you will too! What is their name? A series of mumbles? That can't be right, please speak into the microphone. Hmm, sorry, we don't have anyone by the name of "mumblemumblemumble" checked in with us. Might they be checked in under a different name? No, sorry, there's no one here named "mumblemumblemumblemumble" either. That's rough luck, mate. Please leave before I call the pigs. Nevermind the people who are here to see their buddy whose name they just plain don't know!

Or the dumbfuck guests who leave their still-active keys on the ground outside for homeless people to find, who somehow always choose room numbers and floors that do not exist in our hotel, who then need me to tell them what room they're in. This is one of many reasons we demand ID from a guest needing a key if we do not personally, specifically know who they are. If you're trying to get inside a room here for free, the best way to do that is either work here and have a packed schedule for which the boss will let you sleep over in an out-of-order room, OR be a relative or business relation of one of the owners.

It kinda feels like, all else being equal, hotel guests are like Elon Musk levels of stupid. Some of them are a delight but the vast majority should not be trusted with children or aninals. SPEAKING OF, I have come around on dog ownership.
Specifically, that humans should not be allowed to own dogs, and that toy-class dog breeders should be put to sleep humanely and quickly for the good of all living things.

Its disappointing people don't consider why staff are careful about stuff like this. I lost my hotel keycard once and was almost annoyed at how they wanted multiple id's and such but then I thought, yeah, I want them to be really sure before they give someone access to my room.

We literally only require one ID! And yet it's such an impossibly enormous loving burden on everyone who hasn't yet fallen victim to an impersonator.

I've been watching Burn Notice and none of the ways he uses to get past hotel staff would work at mine without the target's cooperation.

what horror the gas

I tried to shop for costume clothing on Etsy a few weeks ago and the recommended items rabbit hole led me to discover there's like a whole huge subculture of people selling "bridal lingerie" that is the skimpiest stuff you can imagine, modeled by live women, censured poorly or not at all.

Like, I get that some people are exhibitionists and any site with user content will have a porn subculture, but somehow encountering it on Etsy surprised me.

I dunno that any of it was a scan other than I guess buying someone's gently used fetish gear but, still.

A big part of Etsy is custom designed clothes so I find that pretty normal, I think it’s usually all made to order not used, I feel like you wouldn’t usually sell second hand on Etsy

Amazon owns Whole Foods for groceries. For dry goods it’s “Amazon pantry” which I think they manage themselves.

This looks a lot like suffering.
I've noticed in recent years there are a lot of websites using little recent sales popups. You'll be trying to look for stuff and down in the lower left hand corner it will repeatedly flash and disappear. (e.g. "Steve in Texas purchased a green vibrator"). Some of these sales may be real but I was googling how to turn these off without luck (anybody know?) and some of the top results were how to add fake ones to your website to boost real sales.

I doubt any of them are genuine. It's one of those fake things to create a sense of urgency, just like underreporting available stock or claiming that the regular price is a discounted price valid today only.

The brute force solution is to get the noscript extension for your browser of choice and set it so everything is blocked by default.

Works pretty well, there’s a button for temporarily whitelisting a site for when I need to make a purchase or whatever. You’ll probably want to permanently whitelist a couple of the things you use most often.

I... doubt those messages are ever real? Seems like an awful lot of work when posting fake messages has the same effect.

It's always kinda iffy when websites pull that stuff, especially hotel booking sites trying to add some sense of urgency by going all "There are only five more rooms left in this hotel! (with nine rooms overall) Book quickly!".

My favorite was booking a place for a big meetup shortly* before covid with said friends. One found a place, linked it to me and upon loading the site it said in bright red letters "One other person has looked at this recently!" and it's like, well no poo poo :v:

*: shortly as in, we had to cancel it because it was planned for february when the initial lockdowns began

I used NoScript for years but stopped recently; while its very effective at knocking down stuff like that it makes a lot of web sites unusable without reloading a few times and most annoyingly broke a lot of purchase processes that did things like spawn a new window or pop up halfway through for your credit card number. I found that uBlock + pihole is about 95% of the benefit for 5% of the hassle.

Corporate web designers have been pretty effective at designing sites so that noscript breaks the functionality the user is there for, forcing average users to turn it off to use the site. If you know what you're doing you can set up the right exceptions (or use ublock to block just the offensive elements) but most noscript users don't know how to do that.

Trouble with a lot of ad blockers and stuff like that is it can really gently caress up the functionality of sites you need to use. There were no ads on either of them but my UBlock/whatever extension hosed me up with both IRS.gov and the Florida unemployment website until I figured out why I was having a problem.

And good lord, I can't imagine how anyone can listen to or watch anything on YouTube without an ad blocker. I can't find one for my phone or my Xbox and occasionally I try to check out something and Jesus Christ it's obnoxious. Even on my laptop, which won't load ads, it'll loving sit there trying and often hang until I hit the skip ad button. I'm also not watching an ad for a Ford f150 or coca cola to read the loving news

Speaking of the FL UEI website, it was famously inoperable during the onset of the pandemic and no one can tell me this wasn't totally by design.

I finally went down to the Career Center or whatever it was called and explained my problem. My problem beyond going broke I mean. Know what they did? Sat me down at a computer and guided me through the process just like I did at home. With the same result.

And the explanations I overheard here and there being bandied about ranged from how the government can't do anything right to "they're making people actually work to get free money" to how much better it would work if it were privatized.

Privatized unemployment with profit driven websites. Genius level poo poo. gently caress. Imagine an UEI website driven by pop ups advertising poo poo you can't afford to buy. WHy do I think I'm going to live long enough to see this happen?

I mean I'm in no position to know, and I only saw firsthand what was going on in Pennsylvania, but my assumption was the state government was stringing as many people along as possible to spread out the payouts as much as possible. Plus even before COVID struck the Unemployment Comp agency was desperately understaffed even by state government standards.

Well, I'm sure you can imagine how it was in Florida then with Ron Desantis in charge. Also, Florida was one of the states that declined the federal help that boosted the payments so it was even worse.

My UI claim has been under review for 7 months now because of something like this in Tennessee. Had an ad-blocker on and somehow it messed up some fields on the backend, which requires a little more fixing than a normal UI representative can do. Been homeless couch surfing for the last two months as a result!

Now that every website with a decent amount of traffic is getting bought up by conglomerates, I see a lot of “cross-promotion of affiliate content” which they pinky swear isn’t advertising because it’s all owned by the same company :v:

Especially funny when the affiliate is actually a website whose sole function is to post Amazon links for a commission on click throughs. It’s still not advertising! techically

I learned long ago to have multiple browsers on my computer(s) - Firefox, Chrome, Safari/Edge/IE - and to keep one of them completely free of plugins or popup/ad blockers, and to use that unmodified web browser any time I'm dealing with government agencies or HR/benefit systems. Those systems are all incredibly fragile and will fail in all kinds of bizarre and impossible-to-fix ways if they're run in any environment other than the straight vanilla factory standard one.

The thing is, the property actually exists, and used to be owned by a guy with the name in the spam. The guy still owns property so it's pretty easy to track him down. If I were a worse person I'd send the spammer a text with the guy's up to date info. If I were a much worse person I'd try to sell them the info.
