Playing vicky2 and I'm a newb, is there an effective strategy for reducing aristocrats? Playing russia and I noticed I have a fuckload of aristocrats... I am just promoting clergy and buero early game.

Turn up taxes on the rich, reduce taxes on the middle class, build factories so they turn I to capitalists instead

ultimately though you're better off not worrying about aristocrat numbers they'll handle themselves without you doing anything and just focusing on clergy and admin.

For an unrelated hint, the techs that increase your research points in the culture section are your absolute top priority for research, followed by the techs I'm the same section that give you more focuses, and then the techs that increase your education rate.

aristos are fine, they give an RGO output bonus so you don't necessarily want to actively discourage them. just get your middle class and soldier pops online

It's painfully difficult in V2 to really make big changes to your pop composition and you basically need to have the stars align to see fast changes. Aristos I think might change to capitalists; but I can't even tell if they even demote looking at the wiki. As others said you're way better off promoting clergy/clerks/capitalists before trying to reduce Aristo's.

the real way to get rid of your aristocracy is the same way you do anyone else, piss them off until they rise up as reactionary rebels and then shoot them a bunch.

I still think it would be neat if it were possibly to see aristocrats being exiled with diplomatic ramifications that implies and resulting in major changes in the interest groups of those places. i.e in response to the October/November Revolutions in Russia capitalists and aristocrats fleeing to the West which hardens the Liberal/Conservative parties and makes it harder to be allies with Socialist/Communist states (and perhaps giving the West cb's similar to the Revolution mechanics in EU4).

I would be awesome honestly, if the domestic political situation was something you actually had to carefully manage in order to work against the status quo and you couldn't just do whatever you wanted; especially in multiplayer. Certain alliances historically were just plain impossible that happen all the time in multiplayer.

Yeah, I always beeline Medicine, because those disease events suck. Worse, you get a new pop-up every time it spreads, so it's also annoying, which makes it so much worse.
It's one of the most annoying parts of playing an unciv.

Victoria 2 is a game of snowballing and you want your good numbers to be going up, and you want to minimize your time when numbers go down. And raw popcount is a big number to just lose by percentage thanks to, like, loving tb.

Yea, its like 1850 and my soldier pops turn red as soon as their recruited. I am guess this is bc I'm taxing the poo poo out of the poor and have started building factories, so everything is transitioning into craftman?

Soldier pops? Are you...paying them? You have a slider for that.

Unless you're talking about artisans, that would be pretty normal for a lot of countries and there isn't much to do to stop it besides educating and industrializing.

No that's normal, you see you get 1 soldier unit for each 1000 soldiers pops per province (increased to 3000 after the first). So you can get a lot of individual provinces that have like...1001 soldiers. And then you build a unit and 2 soldiers die or demote and now you don't have enough soldiers in that specific province to support the unit. If you have 20 provinces with 999 soldier pops each then you can support 0 soldier units.

you have to make soldier pay competitive to attract them, pops won't tend to promote to soldier at the base rate (middle of the slider)

Technically I'm not sure if soldiers actually are paid more with a higher slider, or if the slider merely affects the rate in which they promote. It would make sense to me that a higher military budget affects recruitment broadly without necessitating the average pay being any higher.

they are, you can see their needs shift to being unmet if you bottom out the slider

I’m curious about the pie charts. When I started doing serious data visualisation in corporate strategy teams I found that nobody used them, supposedly because they aren’t actually very intuitive to process. To the degree that it sort of felt like pie charts were obsolete. Have they had a renaissance or is it just that they’re good for the use case somehow?

E: or just Vicky 2 nostalgia?

Pie charts are quite bad at conveying information tbh. People do like how they look though.

I think games use them to escape the "excel simulator" label. They look much more friendly than a line chart that would carry the same message. I'm working on data presentation at my job and pie charts often have much simpler logic from the design point of view. You don't have to worry about scale (how do you present a line chart with the value set of 985, 12, and 1?) or labels (the legend is separate so you don't have to worry about trimming the text).

Area charts are basically just better in every respect but as you say, they make the game look more officesofwarish. That's why we went with both, so you can choose whether you prefer aesthetics or readability.
