I noticed lately that my cat doesn't notice when people walk into rooms and stuff, just now I tried clapping behind him and he didn't respond at all. Do I need to do anything extra to care for a cat who has gone deaf, he's 17 the internet suggested it's sorta normal for them to lose their hearing with age?

yeah, the same reasons you and I lose auditory acuity as we get older applies to cats. depending on how much he is used to hearing things you might have to adjust for the fact he won't hear dinner or the sound of a door slamming when you come home. sometimes they get very loud (because they can't hear you/hear themselves) so you have to make yourself more visible to comfort them. it'll depend a lot on the cat.

it's also possible there's a temporary thing that could be reversed, you should talk to your vet for an exam. an ear infection/blockage is not uncommon either.

At the risk of beating my drat drum again, you might look into a liquid diet or liquid supplements. 'Kitty milkshakes' saved Alfador's life several times, because even if he wouldn't eat anything, he was willing to drink.

CliniCare RF is my absolute go-to - so many times it kept Alfador going, the little weirdo - and CliniCare Blue is also good.

Seconding the vet exam for the deaf cat, just in case. But yeah you're going to have to get used to making yourself visible since he won't be able to pick up on your subtle sounds anymore.
