When I dug a little deeper too apparently when he was interviewed when they were touring Europe he was saying that the money returns just weren't good enough and they were almost breaking even with their tour to Europe with all the costs involved.

I can't imagine that is actually the case maybe in Europe they weren't making huge profit but in the United States a four-piece band like them and the theaters they were able to sell out they would be making good money. He's also a person who comes from extreme wealth I guess so his own perspective is probably skewed a bit.

Which is crazy to me because when I saw them at the 930 Club, I'm pretty sure it was two sold out nights, and then when I saw them at The Anthem, an even bigger venue, I'm pretty sure it was sold out there as well.

Yeah, I saw that Chris Bear is finishing up a solo project.

I really want to like the Clairo album more but I can feel the Jack Antonoff. The past year I’ve been listening to early 70’s music like Carole King, Margo Guryan, and Judee Sill though and can appreciate the similarities.

Yeah, I haven't been to a concert in a couple of reasons for obvious reasons, and I picked up tickets for Japanese Breakfast. I normally see shows at venues that don't use ticketmaster, so it's been a while. It's amazing how a $35 ticket will suddenly cost $60 for no reason at all. At least they have an option now to see what the price will be with all their extra fees before you go to checkout.

They were still trying to get me to buy extra things. $10 for coat check. $20 for early entry to the venue. $30 for access to a special lounge. Not VIP or backstage, just "special."

Wanting to help out a struggling business during a pandemic like ticketmaster, of course I paid for all of them.

Can you believe that I bought tickets to see one of the two shows the New Pornographers are playing with their full band?

I have seen them with Dan Bejar before, but never with Neko Case. When they played with Bejar, he would just leave the stage after his songs. It all seemed very chill.

The few times I've seen them live it was always with Neko, but I'm not sure who else might have been missing.

Confession time: I've really been coming around on the new Modest Mouse. I still think it's their weakest album, but I feel compelled to keep listening to it.

I even got a ticket to see them in October! That'll be my 3rd time seeing them and they'll be my first show since the pandemic started.

I've seen them live with Dan and live with Neko but not both. It should be a good show! I stuck around after a show to get all their autographs once and they were super friendly.

Seven for beauty that blossoms and dies

Big week for NZ music last week.

Most exciting for me was the new album from Anthonie Tonnon, who I will always go to bat for as one of the absolute finest songwriters working in Aotearoa right now, plus he actually lets his accent come through when he sings. Favourite song on the record is probably Peacetime Orders, which is a "meditation on the failure of the Obama years and also a tribute to the Auckland house music scene in the 90s".

Grawlixes also released an album. If you're familiar with French For Rabbits, you'll like Grawlixes, since they share a few members. They're another NZ band who you can hear the accent in, which I always appreciate. It's mainly a break up album (the singers are a former couple), but it's not particularly bleak. Not sure if I could pick a favourite track, but City Across The Bay, one of the singles, is one stand out.

And speaking of French For Rabbits, they released a new single ahead of an album that's due to come out some time in the back half of the year. If you like French For Rabbits and their dreamy folk sound, then you'll continue to like them with this one.

Anyway, that's probably enough kiwi music for the day, but hopefully someone appreciates a little glimpse at what we've got going on down at our end of the world.

Let's Eat Grandma's breakthrough was 2018, not that long ago and they're still very young. They could surprise us yet. I'd like to see more, that record was really good.

I like Snail Mail, but she's kind of at risk of getting lost in a sea of very similar artists, maybe.

What's the thread's take on Dry Cleaning? I slept on them a bit until their album just clicked, and it might be strong contender for record of the year. Its like Life Without Buildings/Sonic Youth/Joy Divison/Television playing at once, I'm seriously addicted:

Oh wow okay, so I heard the SPELLLING song "Boys At School" on college radio and I was like whoa, what is this. Then I was looking it up and I started remembering that this thread was debating it a few pages back. Gave the album a listen and right now I'm on team "This should be my favorite album in a decade, but... the vocals..."

I'm going to have to sit with this one a while. There's so much I love about the music itself, it's so my vibe. That sort of Danny Elfman inspired thing plus some synths, also kind of video game-ish. It's like the music that I would want to make in an alternate timeline where my life went in that direction. But the vocals really are a barrier, they just sound so overwrought a lot of the time. I dunno. Maybe some day it'll work for me. I really want it to.

I would still say "Boys At School" is an unqualified masterpiece. Everything clicks on that one.

I'm feeling the same and am really enjoying about two thirds of the songs on the album. I've also gone back to listen to Good News over the last few days, turns out I love the entire thing now. I never gave it much attention back in the day, partly due to dumb teen logic of 'oh no this is the popular album with the big hit song'.

Looking back after another 3 albums have come out since then, I appreciate it a lot more. I love the banjo in a lot of the songs, Satin in a Coffin and Bury Me With It are big hits for me but I don't dislike a single song. I think Lonesome Crowded West is still near the top for me because of when I listened to it, but this is definitely up there.

Yeah they have been impressing the hell out of me lately. I kind of didn't want to like them because they almost seemed like a gimmick, but really they're just super talented and they're doing what I want more bands to do -- just keep making records and don't worry so much about whether they're the best record ever made.

Also, continuing my SPELLLING trip report: when I listened to the album a second time it felt like 90% of my objections to the vocals faded away. It's still going to be a hard sell to anyone the first time around, but yeah. I'm already coming around to really liking this and I'm probably gonna buy it.

Though in the back of my mind I'm still, like, worried that I've somehow been tricked into liking it.
