See has some great fight scenes. Ted Lasso and Mythic Quest are great comedies, and Servant is good too.

I'd also recommend Dickinson and Physical. Little America from last year was good too.

Concerning the Foundation TV series, this interview gives me hope that they know what they're doing. I like the explanation of why they added Brothers Dawn, Day, and Dusk. clone emperors, in order to have fewer faces in the series https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-features/david-s-goyer-interview-1234983774/

I figure the six characters recurring in each segment will include the clone brother emperors, Eto Demerzel, Hari Seldon as a hologram, so that leaves the sixth as unknown to me

A thing I wrote on another discord:

Ted Lasso and For All Mankind are the essential Apple shows.

also worth checking out:

dramas: Servant, Home Before Dark, Little Voice

comedies: Mythic Quest, Little America, Dickinson, Central Park, Trying

Physical is pretty good but real dark, and Schmigadoon is promising but only had two eps so far (obv it’s had one more since then. it’s okay)

I like everything about Schmigadoon except for the bit where they forgot to write funny jokes. There are a lot of jokes, and there are a lot of talented people delivering them, but the joke to laugh ratio is very very low.

I liked it for the performances and the direction, but the later episodes were way too straight forward. I didn't regret watching it though.

Giving Schmigadoon one more episode because it isn’t funny or especially clever.

Also I hate, hate the character of Josh and how selfish and emotionally constipated he is. Every problem in the central relationship is a result of him not putting forth any effort.

I like Schmigadoon, but I hope it’s a single series and wraps up though. And that Apple does more one off runs and miniseries in general.

Jane Krakowski hasn’t shown up yet, right? Or have I been blind?

My wife really liked it! I got lost about half way in since I was normally doing dishes or something other than paying attention to the show while we had it on and haven't bothered to finish it up yet. Seems well made but I think it's the kind of show that you can't really just have on in the background and expect to know what's going on.

Mathematically, six seasons is all it can run before we go into our future, maybe seven seasons.

Apple TV has been a pleasant surprise all around. Ted Lasso is Ted Lasso and brought me by itself but I really enjoyed Mythic Quest and See. I expected to hate See but found myself drawn in. For all Mankind tho.... blew me away. Really, really good show that just HITS and that season 2 ending: gently caress. Even when characters have gone places where I hate them a little this show somehow makes me love them again. *External - DO NOT CLICK ON SPOILERS UNTIL DONE*
Gordo and Trace RIP Genuinely shocked how much I like this and some of the characters. Molly Cobb is my favourite: flaws and all. Danielle Poole's successful mission made me smile like I was watching Ted Lasso. I hope For All Mankind gets more recognition as it feels like the internet isn't talking about it that much.

Foundation is Apple TV exclusive right?

For any who are curious about Ted Lasso like I was: watch it. It was hyped and hyped and I finally watched it because goons just kept went on and on about it and... it met and exceeded the hype. I was not expecting such a fun, happy show that was not overly saccharine and somehow made me hopeful and want to go out and do things. God I hope the writing and acting keep up and the show knows when to leave gracefully as I was not expecting some silly television show about an american coaching football to grab me so hard. I'm still shocked this isn't a Canadian show as I was not expecting an American involved show to have such a complete lack of cynicism without being a bit scary and involving body counts.

Bill Lawrence is one of the co-creators of Ted Lasso. You can make a number of criticisms about Scrubs but cynical isn't one of them.

In case anyone doesn't know, Molly Cobb from For All Mankind is based on Jerrie Cobb, who should have been the first woman in space.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerrie_Cobb

There's a YA book about her and the other women who were attempting to be astronauts back in those days called Almost Astronauts. It's perfect if you have a daughter who you feel doesn't hate the patriarchy enough, because it's an absolutely infuriating story.

The Russian pencil thing was actually bad for the Russians. The graphite was super fine, could break into tiny pieces, float away, and cause important systems to malfunction. The Americans spent the amount of money they did on the pen for a smart reason.

It has become a big joke over time only because people don't understand why they did it.

I don't know if anyone used graphite pencils. Russia and America used grease pencils. Then the Fischer pen company created a pen that could write in zero g and sold it to both NASA and the Russian space agency.

Wow. I really feel bad for Sam. I hope he doesn’t feel betrayed by Ted. :ohdear:

But of course Jamie would need to be back on the team this season. I’m interested what Roy will do too… will he get another shot on the team too or is he really going to stay in his own plotline?

Also this episode had some sexual content huh? I’m surpised because I thought Apple was trying to keep their shows more family friendly. But… Keeley’s porn of choice being Roy crying was pretty great.

Amazing episode, and yes - Roy is done playing. At that age, you don't come back from an injury like that in the Premier League. Keeley made Jamie go down on her in an s01 ep, the gala one I think? This aint a family show!

It came from a Wall Street Journal story in 2018, which was (according to the WSJ) based on people working on Apple+ shows.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/no-sex-please-were-apple-iphone-giant-seeks-tv-success-on-its-own-terms-1537588880

The article is paywalled, but here's the Deadline summary:

quote:

A streaming series based on the life of hip-hop producer and performer Andre “Dr. Dre” Young was rejected by Apple CEO Tim Cook because of its violent and dark content.

The show, Vital Signs, featured drugs, guns and an orgy, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Cook personally decided against moving forward on it, opting to lead Apple’s proposed content services in a direction different from its competition and toward less-edgy content. The WSJ said the decision was made because Apple was afraid to jeopardize its consumer products sales, an issue not faced by streamers like Netflix and Amazon.

The WSJ also reported that a show featuring Resse Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston was also toned down. Apple also backed off from a Whitney Cummings show about the #MeToo movement (“too sensitive a topic”) and asked director M. Night Shyamalan to remove crucifixes from characters’ homes in his psychological thriller because of fears of alienating religious viewers.

Creatives have been told that violence or gratutitous nudity is not what Apple’s looking for, and a lot of the decisions on what will fly are reportedly being aligned to Cook’s personal tastes, with a preference for family-friendly shows like Madame Secretary and Friday Night Lights, the WSJ reports.

It does make me wonder how much of that may have changed since that article was reported, though - just going from things it describes, The Morning Show was still pretty heavy and I know Jennifer Aniston said it was actually revised to become more focused on Me Too stuff after the reports about Charlie Rose and Matt Lauer came out. And there are definitely crucifixes in a few scenes in Servant (an episode focuses on the girl making them out of straw). Plus, See has multiple masturbation scenes and a lot of violence.
