Seems like it's legitimately going mediocre for Team USA at this point. - Silver at team gymnastics, Biles injured - Ledecky not dominant; men and women's swim team in general kind of underwhelming - Silver at softball - Women's soccer and men's basketball teams struggling Women's basketball won and women's water polo still look good. Biles could come back and win a few of the individual gymnastics events. The shooting teams have been alright. It could be worse, I guess.

first American gold in taekwondo first American gold in foil? one of the fencing disciplines at least some great American weightlifters coming up double American golds in skeet, one of them being a guy's third gold in the event We've won the most total medals & only behind one gold, lol @ saying US is mediocre because the glamour events haven't been US sweeps at this point

Omnikin posted:first American gold in taekwondo yeah and will probably still rack up a bunch in track and upcoming swimming events. Ladecky has only been underwhelming by her own insane standard and like someone else said her best events haven't happened yet, she's primarily a distance swimmer. And even in stuff where we're struggling relative to expectations we should probably still be favorites in three of the four basketball events and win a bunch of individual gymnastics stuff.

I'm finding myself rooting for America for the first time in years. I've been so jaded due to our country taking a big poo poo the past 5 years and it made me feel less... American. Almost guilty due to how much I "hated" us. But now I feel better because I want the US to win and I'm behind them. It's inspiring to see these athletes represent us. U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!

I am watching some American horse prance about very nicely on TV right now. I don't know about horse prancing, but it seems to be kicking rear end at it.

Now there is a brown horse, and it is prancing perhaps even better than the first one.

Is mitt Romney’s horse still going to the Olympics?

I checked out a stream of the dressage just to see what it's like and the the announcer immediately said "and this horse... he's just absolutely loving it. he's so strong and beautiful and true.... I just hope he never realizes that there's very little people watching him"

I think the horses do it purely for the love of the game, so he'll be alright

How is horsey dance an olympic sport but not Dog Run?

HootTheOwl posted:How is horsey dance an olympic sport but not Dog Run? Horsey dance used to be a series of military exercises. I think up until the 1940s the teams were made up entirely of cavalry officers even as the cavalry ceased being used in active warfare. The moves themselves are from like Napoleonic era warfare (horses in formation have to adjust their speed and collection/extension of their gaits) so they were irrelevant even back then, but it's a good test of how well trained the horse is and (more importantly) how well trained the human is; there's a lot of teeny tiny adjustments in balance, grip, shifting weight, movement of the rider's lower leg and foot to get the horses to do the thing. Eventing at the Olympics used to be fuckin' bonkers too, the cross-country course was basically "take the worst terrain you would ever find on a battlefield and gallop really really fast over it". Now it's just "take the craziest jumps the course designer has come up with and gallop really really fast over it" which is slightly less dangerous.

I hope the US soccer team turns it around because when they won their last tournament they partied super loving hard and I hope this time they win and invite Alexander ovechkin to party with them, causing a party singularity that destroys earth.

TheMadMilkman posted:To be fair, her best events are the 800 and 1600. Someone in I think the swim thread made the point that Michael Phelps really wrecked the loving curve when discussing US Olympic swimming because when he was competing the press could hype him up as the dude who was going to win every single gold, and then he did. Ledecky by contrast got hyped up and only has a paltry 3 medals, only one of them gold and she had the nerve to not medal in one of her events! (when she was swimming two in one day and got gold in the other one) Like realistically, the US has the most of every single medal in swimming and almost double the total medal count of the next closest country and is looking to increase all counts even further over the next few days. They're really only underwhelming in the sense that they no longer have a person who can win gold in a bunch of different disciplines because they are the best swimmer of all time (they instead of someone who can gold in her specialist areas but still medal in other areas because they're only one of the best swimmers of all time)

(when she was swimming two in one day and got gold in the other one) I think the difficulty here is following up an Olympics where you do blow everyone away. That's what Ledecky did in 2016, she was practically at a Simone Biles "everyone else might as well not even bother" level of performance. They hyped her that way and she delivered. Now, five years later, she's not quite on the same form and it's unsurprisingly disappointing some folks.
