I've really come to like the record-a-message feature that I guess is in all modern messengers by now. It's like texting, except with voice. It's asynchronous, so

  • you can make a longer point (it's insane how much you can actually say in like, 3 minutes of audio) because you can't be interrupted
  • you can think about what exactly you want to say instead of having to come up with something sensible on the spot
  • it's persisted in a manner that people might actually hear it back (even if a regular meeting has been recorded, nobody goes back and listens to it)

but it's also audio, i.e.

  • you can add sublety and tone that is hard to put into text (particularly if you're unsure about what you're saying, talking is much more forgiving than text)
  • it's way faster to produce! This post which would have taken like 2 minutes of audio took me probably 10 minutes to type out on the phone (flipside is that text is way faster to consume)

voice notes / voice messaging is an absolute scourge. either text me or call me but don't ramble into your phone for 7 minutes trying to get to the point where i have no way to reply, interject or otherwise contribute to the conversation

I like video calls for work tbh. It's nice to talk to another human being and see their face.

just going to leave this here:

video chat is weird because it gives you that little window of yourself. I don't spend a lot of time looking at myself in the mirror generally so this ends up distracting me.

However in my early 20s I decided to learn how to raise my eyebrows differently on each side, I learned this gradually while brushing my teeth every morning and night in front of the bathroom mirror.

So now if I am bored and see my reflection I check if I can still do it... basically out of habit.

So yes, sorry if I look like I am auditioning for Ace Ventura 3 while you are talking this months metrics.

But it also allows you to get on with your job while stuck in 3 hour meeting from hell that you are only half listening to. I get so much churn work done during those.

edit: Will the also invent the rear end in a top hat that just leaves a voicemail that says "call me?"

that image of the arse-kicking machine is also from a patent. Here's a line from the patent description:

quote:

amusement apparatus that includes a user-operated and controlled device for self-infliction of repetitive blows to the user's buttocks including a plurality of rotating arms
bearing flexible extensions for Self-paddling the user's buttocks.

Lmao:

quote:

...Typical prior art devices provide a paddle that can
pivot once, upon being triggered, to Spank a hand or buttocks of the user. In U.S. Pat. No. 920,837, issued to De Moulin, a device is disclosed for lifting and Spanking of the user for
Secret Society initiation ceremonies.

my mom does this to me all the time.

"hey son it's your mom, give me a call"

i get the impulse to want to avoid text communication since it also sucks a lot. it's just that humans are bad at communication especially when it's asynchronous, so we're just doomed to make each other angry over text or voicemail or (insert future tech here).

beats the voicemail that's just 14 seconds of someone trying to put the receiver back on the handset, while having a seizure, during an earthquake
