Society is wonderful. I love the sudden ending that would be the lead-in to the third act of any other movie, but all the money and enthusiasm obviously went into the orgy.

It's not even a cliffhanger or a gotcha. It's more like "tune in next week to find out how it ends", oh wait oops it's a movie. I'd say overall it was somehow moderately dumber than the first one, and the first one was really dumb. Pro: Cillian Murphy <3 instead of John Krasinski. Pro: more poo poo actually happened. I am really willing to suspend my sense of disbelief for post apocalypse stuff. Books, movies, games, usually just fall back on fudging stuff to keep the story going, and that's fine for the most part. Not everything needs to be The Road. And I don't want to be one of the "b-b-but gasoline wouldn't even work" people. That poo poo gets annoying. But there is something about the complete lack of attention to detail in AQP that drives me nuts. It's not even worth doing a play by play of all of the things that make no sense, because almost nothing makes sense. They just set up this ridiculously loose set of rules they decide they can break whenever they want. There's zero consistency to anything. It's such a lazy looking apocalypse too. Does electricity still work? Yeah all the street lights are still on when we need the lighting but then the next area looks like it's been abandoned for 20 years. Let's go to the pharmacy that just puts everyone's prescriptions out on retail shelving for some reason? Plants just look glued on everywhere. Why are they growing in a circle around a hole in a train lol. Ok now I am being the gasoline guy, but that poo poo is lazy as hell. Also the scene with the Redneck weirdos was the dumbest, most pointless thing. The movie somehow felt 30 minutes too long at 90 minutes.

I watched Stephen King's Sleepwalkers the other night, and it's currently at the top of my list for movies I want to see another run at. I'm guessing the biggest problem is that it was written by Stephen King, and based upon one of his own unpublished short stories. It's got that weird 90's pre-Scream forced camp energy that never quite works. I feel like especially in the early 90's there was a trend where horror took a look at the camp factor of 80's slashers, and attempted to emulate it without understanding it, so it just comes off as silly. It also spends most of its time with the antagonists, who are basically just horny incestuous crackheads. It doesn't really work in this situation because they're straight up unlikable. Then there was the violence against cat puppets, it was really shocking for a movie with its tone, and once again didn't quite fit because it was unearned. The good parts were definitely Clovis (although ACAB), wet puppets, and weirdly this is probably one of Stephen King's better endings, but it still wasn't great.

But I only heard about the movie after people kept posting the "butt head" with no context, kind of like how people posted that final shot of Sleepaway Camp without context until I watched the movie knowing what was coming. Still a great movie, but if you had no idea that final sequence was coming it'd be so much better.

I watched The Empty Man and Spiral this weekend. Spiral was good torture porn but entirely predictable and Chris Rock looks like he’s got a migraine every time he tries to act. The Empty Man was weird as hell, a bit too long, but I still liked it. Reading this thread, I don’t think I’ve ever watched sleep away camp or the original prom night and I’m ashamed of myself since my favorite horror is slasher horror.

Yeah, this. It makes me very happy in spite of the extreme violence promised for Kills. In the original movie Michael is brutal, but he is more methodical than impressive and that's what makes him a classic figure. Witness how he pins Bob to the wall and then inspects him, like a butterfly collector after pinning a specimen. Michael kills with his hands until he finds a knife or a strangling cord, then he kills with that. If he drops it, he picks it up again before he moves on. The stuff that happened in the sequels with al fresco kills didn't really ring true with me, so it concerned me that Michael seemed to be reverting to the Halloween II style with things like the neon tube stabbing. But when Green and McBride both said (paraphrased) "you don't need to know where he comes from, only that he is" I knew that they both get the essence correct. But I saw it a while ago and I might be just be misremembering or desensitized, so I'm not sure how accurate my judgment is. I really enjoyed it though, I know that much. I like snowy horror movies and horror comedies and Werewolves Within delivered on both.

Of course now I have a shiny new Arrow Blu Ray but I still refuse to get rid of that tape.

gently caress! The 7th Victim is fantastic. What a mood. Love it, love it, love it. That shower scene! The scene with the poison! Both are so unnerving and imposing for how simple they're. And then that entire section with Mimi near the end is perfect and deranged and gah! The pacing felt off at the start but the weak connective tissue actually was working in favor of the movie at the end. The devil worshipers were so human. Even at the end the shaming them with the prayer rang so hollow. The one scene where a member lets something slip to the lead felt so much like the group getting outed. Also how unsubtle can this line be quote:My dear, we were intimate. The times we use to have together! I bet she never told you about that - you're too young. The fact that there is this emotional malaise that hangs over the entire movie that is finally broken through by Jacqueline's lover knocking the poison out of her hands and breaking down is so suddenly heart wrenching and evocative. Gah! And that ending. great movie — 5 bags of popcorn, gently caress

I threw on a trashy Amazon Prime horror (as I usually do) tonight and was surprised it was released this year and featured a lot of fun makeup and creature designs - despite being badly written and with a terrible plot I had an okay time. Dawn of the Beast should be renamed Come for the Big Foot - stay for the deadites!

It's how you get a movie like Stepfather 2 after the first one, Child's Play 2 after the first one, etc. It was almost like the filmmakers were trying to get across this idea of "Don't take any of this too seriously"

I watched Edge of the Axe last night, a largely ignored slasher movie that's on Arrow's streaming service. It felt like a fairly unique slasher movie to me. It felt like there were stretches where it was actually easy to forget there's even a killer around, and it has a pretty Shyamalan tier twist ending.
