NO SPOILERS. What happens when your long-running franchise finally achieves mainstream success after 10 years, just as you've definitively wrapped up your main protagonist's character arc? You introduce a new one and do a soft reboot! Yakuza: Like a Dragon is the eighth mainline title in Ryu ga Gotoku Studio's Yakuza franchise, starring newcomer Ichiban Kasuga in a whole new saga. On New Year's Eve of 2001, the Arakawa family of the Tojo Clan finds itself in dire straits - a high-ranking member of the family has murdered a lieutenant of a rival family. Ichiban, eager to repay his patriarch for everything he's done for him, takes the fall, and is locked away in prison for 18 years. Upon his release, Ichiban realizes that the world has changed while he was gone and everything he knew has been turned upside down. Kamurocho, the traditional setting of the series, has been taken over by the Omi Alliance of Kansai, and his beloved boss is now the head of the Arakawa family of the Omi. This will be an informative LP where I show off the main story and as much content as I can manage. I'm joined by my Chapter 01 - Light and Shadow Chapter 02 - Bloody Reunion Chapter 03 - The Town at Rock Bottom Chapter 04 - The Dragon of Yokohama Chapter 05 - The Liumang Man Chapter 06 - Ignition Chapter 07 - Geomijul Chapter 08 - Bleached Black Chapter 09 - House of Cards Chapter 10 - Justice Tempered by Mercy Chapter 11 - The Odds Chapter 12 - The End of Yakuza Chapter 13 - Coin Locker Baby Chapter 14 - Passing the Torch Finale - To the Pinnacle Premium Adventure April Fools' 2022 Update Other Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio LPs we've done Yakuza 0 (Cut commentary) Yakuza Kiwami (Cut commentary) Yakuza Kiwami 2 (Cut commentary) Judgment (Cut commentary) ChaosArgate fucked around with this message at 19:37 on Jun 10, 2022 |

The first Yakuza game to have an undiagnosed schizophrenic as the main character, looking forward to it. I just beat it myself about a month ago, but it'll be fun to see if I missed anything interesting.

That reminds me of that one episode of Star Trek where Sulu saw his father get shot in the face and then took over a yakuza clan.

Regarding the "end of the 21st century" stuff as discussed in the first video - there is actual debate over whether a new decade starts on year 20X0 or 20X1. It's one of those silly "is it a gif or jif?" arguments that can be very serious business for some people.

I think the only bad English Yakuza VA I can recall in the games I've played is Hamill's Majima, which is weird, because Hamill is usually a drat good VA.

I'm still on the fence wrt buying this game, mainly because of the combat system. Seeing it in action like this will definitely help me make a decision.

Personally, despite liking the game, I felt like the combat system was probably the weaker part of it. It was very close to breaking out of the generic jRPG mold, and while it's not bad, it's just a hair's breadth shy of being really good, which is a shame.

So you’re just skipping Yakuza3-6? Don’t blame you, Yakuza 7 is better than all of them put together. Enjoy yourself! I will enjoy watching.

I'll get around to those eventually, but I was just so enraptured by this game that I immediately wanted to get to work on doing an LP, just like with Judgment, haha. Since this game's more or less a soft reboot with few story ties to the original game, I figured I could give Ichiban a spotlight sooner rather than later. Geemer posted:I'm still on the fence wrt buying this game, mainly because of the combat system. Seeing it in action like this will definitely help me make a decision. The combat system's got a few odd warts, since they pivoted to this genre like 8 months out from release, but its pretty fun if you're ok with a relatively basic turn based JRPG battle system. It reminds me a bit of Chrono Trigger's system. Solitair posted:Nani!? English voice acting in a Yakuza game!? Judgment and Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise also had English VA! According to Scott Strichart, they had enough data to show that not having a dub was a significant barrier to entry, so they tested the waters with those two games and the reception was solid enough that they went for it here too! And they also have some improved animation tech that lets the models better match the English dialogue with mouth flaps!

Its really obvious how low down on the ladder Ichi is compared to Kiryu. Hes practically a nobody working the dregs of Kamuro.

Here's some more comments now that I've watched the video. I like to think Mitsuo's back tattoo is the same as the phoenix on his jacket, for an obvious gag should we ever see that tattoo. Jo Sawashiro is voiced by Brian Bloom. He's my personal favorite character in the game. In an alternate universe, Captain Sawashiro is very happy Ichi got the guy's wallet. He uses the credit and ID cards within to totally scam and ruin the poor man. Ichi naturally is not told about this.

Its tone is very emblematic of the franchise, and it’s a proper sequel that doesn’t require any knowledge of the previous games, without breaking continuity.

He's surrounded by all these guys who want to get rich and powerful by doing crimes, and he's like "I joined the yakuza to help people." He'll do crimes - no problem - but not for immoral reasons. I mean, yes, he WILL do crimes, but most of what he does is entirely legal, depending on how limiting Japan's self-defense laws are.

Tiggum posted:Also depending on how much of what the player experiences is canonical. Is he actually stabbing, shooting and beating people unconscious, or are we supposed to understand that there was actually a brief scuffle in which no one was seriously hurt? The gameplay and cutscenes present two very different narratives. Hey, Kiryu has never killed anyone. Ever. Especially not those 200 or so people he's gunned down during car chases, and all those other people he shot and stabbed were just mildly embarrassed and recovered once the bruises went away. Just like how none of the necks Majima's snapped ever killed anyone.

I picked up Judgement based on your LP and loved it. Was hoping you would get around to this. Still on the fence about getting this due to the change in the combat. Would like to hear if people like it or no? Can anyone explain the whole deal (or link any good articles) about these drinking clubs(what is the proper term)? Is it more about companionship? I find it really odd and fascinating. I have many questions!

They are called "Host(ess) clubs" and are featured quite extensively during the series, especially in Yakuza 0. Basically, Japan has quite prude laws against pornography and prostitution. The free market tried to move around it and to fill the demand with the given supply. That's why there are countless businesses, which aren't real prostitution but as close to it as the law allows. The clubs themselves are (baring backroom dealings) just that. You go in there, and a bunch of pretty girls party with you and goad you into spending excessive amounts on food and alcohol for the table and give huge tips. It's a prude strip club. I don't want to demean women in that industry. I guess you need more than just looks to manipulate patrons, which is a skill. cant cook creole bream fucked around with this message at 13:39 on Aug 8, 2021 |

The Japanese sex business has tried to exploit as many loopholes as they could find. Another example of this are Soaplands, which got mentioned in the first episode, specifically shangri-la. Customer comes in, pays for a bath, then a massage with a happy ending, except on the books they only paid for the massage, and the sex happened of the masseuses discretion after they get 'acquainted' with the customer, so its not 'prostitution'. Though from what I know japanese law against prostitution is kind of strange and oddly specific. In that prostitution is specifically 'Paid penetrative sex between two strangers'. The new combat system took some getting used to- I hadn’t played any turn based RPGs in a long time. But the characters are fun enough you want to learn how to fight as them. So it wasn’t too bad. There were certain fights I wanted to be more challenging but that may have been because I played on Easy. Other fights I wished were less repetitive, but that’s a common issue with this type of game.

Sorry, Ichiban, it's quite hard to find somewhere to get a duck and a hose at this hour. A duck, anyway. Hmm, the last time a protagonist in this series unjustly went to prison for a best friend, he ended up Chairman of the Clan. Wonder if this will work out as well. I too enjoyed the pun enemy names.
