I want to reverse the polarity of a motorcycle digital dash. simple LCD. normally black characters on a white-ish backlit BG. I want to swap the lighting for red LEDs and invert so that the digits and indicators show up red on a black(ish) BG.

I've seen projects on this but a lot of them are from different types of displays and I'm nervous about ripping an OEM cluster. How tricky is it to install a new sheet of polarizing film rotated 90 degrees, generally?

i sadly probably can't find a reversed LCD for the DRZ's cluster. I do have a trailtech speedo left over from when i was considering turning the Ninja into a streetfighter, but would like to use the stocker if possible.

only feedback i got in another thread was "it's hard and you'll probably crack it, get a spare to practice on first"

on my old calc and stereo i could reverse the polarity by flipping the filter over so I think you don't need to do any 90-degree rotations but i have absolutely no intuition for how light works so maybe this situation is different somehow

my ublock origin crapped out and had to be reinstalled for some reason, so this is your periodic reminder to include

in your custom filters list. it removes the infuriating "more videos" thing that obscure the bottom of the window every time you pause.

my lessons were also pretty useless, we just sorta splashed around

to this day i cannot front crawl, and while i may manage to not actually die for a little while in open water, it will not be graceful or efficient

that sucks - id say get more lessons so you can learn that stuff just in case you want to actually walk past water that is chest high

i didn't learn till like... i was 12? I think. floating, then dog paddle, and then freestyle - you'll pick up on it fast

plus diving off boards which is scary as it looks higher than it actually is haha

i was terrified of deep water until mandatory swimming lessons in jr high. i knew how to do all that stuff. teacher made me stay after class and wouldnt let me leave until i jumped in the deep end. it took her putting a pole in as an assist and i was still terrified but right after i jumped in it all clicked. i never got to thank her before she died a couple years ago

we spent every summer canoeing and kayaking so my parents made us learn to swim from like age 2. in retrospect i wish i'd done the lifeguard certifications because that's a killer job for a teenager. oh well.

it is strange to me though when an adult literally cannot swim. i know there can be a class/culture thing there (or at least urban/rural) but it is still odd. there's so much water in the world

same lol. well kinda i guess. i can tread water and not drown but im not exactly a strong swimmer. just never spent much time in the pool/beach as a kid.

it was pretty embarrassing when i did my BOSIET training several years ago. it involves practising and completing a number of helo submersion and escape drills:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztt-19eVbog

anyway when we suited up for the pool on the second day the instructor asked if anyone wasn't a strong swimmer and i was the only one who raised their hand and i had to wear a special helmet lol. to make matters worse i managed to fail the final drill where you're submerged upside-down and have to escape. my harness got stuck so the diver had to help me out and i didn't escape through the airframe window so i had to do it again.

was still fun and doing off-shore stints as a specialist (fly out as needed, one week tops, non-fifo) paid megabucks.

maybe you could do networking in the north sea lol?

edit: my BOSIET expired in 2018 which was fine as id stopped being in a role where i had to do off-shore stuff. not sure whether id be willing to renew it lol

it looks like a differential GPS system. you install a ground station at a known surveyed point and it receives GPS positioning data from the satellites, then compares what it's getting to its known location and broadcasts correction values to nearby receivers so they can accommodate for space weather and other error sources and increase precision. that is pretty common in surveying and some other fields.

the precision landing stuff is different from how it's currently done. a traditional ILS, whether on the ground or on a carrier, has narrow beam radio transmitters lined up with the runway and the plane follows the beams to land. GPS approaches are common these days, but i don't think there are GPS RNAV approaches that will actually get you right onto the runway -- they will all have a minimum decision altitude where if you are on the approach and you hit e.g. 500 feet AGL and you still don't see the runway through the fog, you have to abort the landing because the GPS position isn't guaranteed to be precise enough for a touchdown. there are ILS systems (category 3) that can guide a plane right down to 0 feet, but they require expensive precision transmitters on the field and so are only seen at big airports that regularly have heavy weather.

so basically i think the idea here is to use a ground station transmitting to nearby aircraft to improve GPS accuracy enough to enable ILS landings at any location -- particularly relevant to the VTOL F-35s they are showing in the video -- without having to install the fancy transmitters. there's also probably some security benefit over existing deployable ILS systems, since an ILS is literally a radio beacon shining into the sky saying "this is the exact location of the runway" while this GPS thing could be used over an encrypted datalink.

that's my interpretation

thanks for the reply Sagebrush, interesting stuff!
