Pretty sure jam can be made in a myriad of ways and nutritional content varies wildly across the board

It's almost always just sugar, water, and fruit. You can add other flavorings but anything else might just add to the calorie content. Fruit actually has a ton of sugar but fruit is good for you. I was reading something from the NHS (UK) a while back and they basically said that eating any fruit far outweighs the sugar content so you can mostly discount it. But they almost always add a ton of sugar to jam. I always get the 25-50% less sugar kind.

I think it has to do with fructose vs sucrose. Plus it actually has vitamins, minerals, and fiber. I'll try to find the NHS article on it. I'd like to see it again anyway.

edit: from https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well/how-does-sugar-in-our-diet-affect-our-health/

quote:

The "of which sugars" figure describes the total amount of sugars from all sources – free sugars, plus those from milk, and those present in fruit and vegetables.

For example, plain yoghurt may contain as much as 8g per serving, but none of these are free sugars, as they all come from milk.

The same applies to an individual portion of fruit. An apple might contain around 11g of total sugar, depending on the size of the fruit selected, the variety and the stage of ripeness.

But sugar in fruit is not considered free sugars unless the fruit is juiced or puréed.

This means food containing fruit or milk will be a healthier choice than one containing lots of free sugars, even if the 2 products contain the same total amount of sugar.

You can tell if the food contains lots of added sugars by checking the ingredients list.

edit 2: here's what I was looking for

quote:

Sugars also occur naturally in foods such as fruit, vegetables and milk, but we do not need to cut down on these types of sugars.

Outweighs probably referring to micronutrients but also don't forget the fiber content of fruit both gives feelings of fullness and helps keep from getting a sugar high. Which is a sign of a pending inconvient headache for most people but is concerning for diabetics; you can generally work some fruit in to sate your sweettooth as a diabetic while syrups, jams, and candy will tend to be off limits if you want to keep your toes.

Certainly there are all sorts of good things to know if you have specific dietary issues

And I don't think anyone is really surprised by "fruit is healthier than a pile of granulated sugar" I was just curious what the rationale was for posting it in this case because a lot of times it's naturalistic woo

Now with less breakage.

One thing about some regions of US cooking I appreciate is the love of pickles - it's not like we don't use them, and you may get a pickle with a restaurant burger, but the pickle threshold seems lower over on your side. I mean, you probably got it from the Germans or the Polish, but still. :)

I think my favourite starter was one I got at a Russian restaurant in Helsinki: a neat pile of perfectly salt and crispy pickles, cut into square sticks and stacked like a square campfire, with a bowl each of thick sour cream and honey to dip them in.

e: I did not have the bear meat - it was like $40 for a moderate portion. The reindeer was good, though.

Are chainsawed bears a popular decoration somewhere around America?

I'm sorry this is from the wrong continent, but I feel like this captures the same spirit. We have a town called Ilomantsi where the main thing is an annual bear statue saw-off. Here's some pics from this year:

And this year's winner, surprisingly touching work titled "Refugees":

We visited the place this summer, and the whole town was filled with past years' competition works. Bears everywhere.

Yes they are a big thing in some places here, specifically in Washington and Oregon I recall seeing fuckloads of them

I think Big Animal Carvings are a sort of Northern Rural thing, from Maine to Alaska

Southern Rural is more 10x10 tents on the side of the road selling watermelons and trump hats

I do see people selling furniture like that sometimes too, like wooden porch swings. Never cool carvings, though

Yeah, I've seen those a lot around New England and upstate New York, but I don't remember any around the parts of Virginia and the Carolinas that I've been in. There's definitely lumberjack competitions up here too.

There's a restaurant chain in California called the Black Bear Diner that has a chainsaw sculpture of a bear at each location. They also serve gigantic bearclaw pastries that are like 2000 calories. Very Americana.

Black Bear Diners vary in quality and quantity of food, but overall they're pretty decent.

Northern California is infested with chainsaw sculptures, especially up top near the redwood forests. Lots of chainsaw bigfoot sculptures if that's your thing (it should be).
