I'm kind of curious, are prospective mods contacted ahead of time about taking up the position or do they just log in one day to find a new link to the mod forum and a PM that says something to the effect of "CONGRATS YOU'RE A MOD, EVERYONE HATES YOU NOW!"?

They get contacted ahead of time in case the person doesn't want to be a mod, but ages ago they'd sometimes just mod people without even asking. IIRC there was one person who never realized they became a mod.
