These things have always been visually neat but then ruined by the fact that fondant is used thus making all of these inedible garbage.

the fun starts when you can see the icing clearly isn't fondant, but you can't tell if it's the tasty sugary kind or the kind that tastes like cream-flavoured lacroix and will cover your tongue with a waxy paste for the rest of the day

Yeah color CRTs were all over the place, but garish was the go to. In the 70s there was pre-googie stylings that were evolved from 1960s aesthetics with lots of pop colors to make things stand out more on video. These high contrasts also stood out more on B&W televisions. There was also a lot of throwback stuff which had tons of earth tones to it (the Gay 90s aesthetic was a popular motif). It was a confusing time.
