A few weeks back some drunks doored my car and one of my neighbors actually threw himself physically in front of their car so they couldn't just drive away and called the cops. Really cool that he did that for me but jesus christ would I never do that in return. That can go bad real quick.

As a kid I spent an inordinate amount of time observing them and trying to figure out how they communicated with their glances and body language. After a few years I managed to get enough of a handle so I could get across stuff like "go away" or whatever. It wasn't perfect because for like a "please stop looking at me I am Eating" I was never sure of where my eyes should be, etc. Also I never figured out what a wink was, but the nod they would give was pretty clearly an affirmation (There's a lot more contextual detail here i cbb to type out)

But she was the last of them with that specific socialisation so I'm the last being alive to understand that particular set of signals (there are going to be generalities between dogs but ykwim) :(

if nothing else i'm just so loving relieved to hear that it's not getting worse. since we're dealing with a sample size of one across the globe we still have no idea what to expect so it could just randomly decide to kill my rear end in the next year or two. but right now i'm telling myself we have a firm trendline established and that i'm good for now

Thanks, I really do appreciate it. She's 13 so it's not unexpected. We had an ultrasound yesterday that showed some masses and she has been bloating with fluid in her abdomen, so it's not looking great. They are testing to see if we can determine a type to sort of get a sense of where we are, how much time we have, and what to do to keep her comfortable.

This one is just extra hard because my wife found her as a stray kitten. She was so sick that the vet thought she wouldn't survive, but my wife nursed her to health, and they've had this incredible bond ever since. So every day has been a gift, but my wife is still devastated.

It just loving sucks how much we get attached to these little jerks and how short of lives they live.
