In case no one has brought it up yet: FADE

Wikipedia posted:

FADE introduces deliberate errors in some of the sectors of the disc (which resemble the errors a scratched CD-ROM/DVD-ROM has). When the disc is copied, the error-correction mechanism (both CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs employ error-correction techniques) will notice the errors and automatically correct them. When the game is launched, the game's executable looks for these errors, and if they are present then it is an original. If they are not available, then it knows it is a fake. There is no notification or error message that tells the player that a fake disk image has been detected, which makes it very difficult for software crackers to determine if their crack has succeeded in defeating FADE. FADE will introduce many issues in the game, rendering it unplayable, giving the impression that the game is simply "buggy". For example, in ARMA 2, FADE will begin by gradually decreasing the accuracy of the player's weapons, making it very difficult to hit a target. FADE might reverse the left/right controls of vehicles, or make them randomly start and stop moving. Eventually it will turn the player into a bird and display a message saying "Good birds do not fly away from this game, you have only yourself to blame".

The only game i cared about loving with players of pirated copies was Lexi Cross because that game loving ruled and it was impossible to find a legit copy. (I bet I could snag one on ebay or whatever now but i don't have anyone to play it with anymore so vOv)

there's probably something existentially shaking for a video game character when a giant crab attacks you and you look but it doesn't have a glowing weak spot.

escape velocity nova had a character named captain hector that would say hi during the early use of the game as shareware. if you played too long without registering he would start to attack you. he was pretty strong but you could still shoot him down lol

tended to be the case with most good shareware utilities. expect you get way more paying customers calling it shareware with no downsides to being unregistered (a nag link or so maybe) than just begging for donations

not least you could reasonably have your employer to buy licenses where you'd never get them to donate

can't remember, but probably something with retrying ftp servers on a timer, like try to reconnect every three minutes.

it was a thing for semi-public pirate ftps that you were only allowed to try a connection every couple of minutes or your IP would be banned.
