IIRC a lot of pinball games had a target called "bonus", I think because it would give you a free game or not depending on if it violated gambling laws in the state (where some considered a free game prize to be gambling)

If I were the Illuminati I'd have killed Kubrick for how bad that movie was. I'm not talking about Eyes Wide Shut, I'm talking about The Shining

I think Kubrick was probably the last artist of film. He never made a sequel, always tackled different themes and styles. He was a true master of his craft that pushed the medium forward. Nobody is doing that now. Even the best movies of recent times, once upon a time in Hollywood and the new blade runner, are stuck in this mold terrified of breaking outside of it.

I have always been obsessed with why the UK had such a moral panic over depictions of ninja weapons specifically for like a decade

Another goon wrote this in a previous UK megathread:

"I mentioned how the Simpsons wasn't considered at all risque in the UK in 1990, but this is the same era that 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' had to be renamed 'Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles' for TV (the movie name stayed the same), and all depictions of Michelangelo's nunchucks had to be edited out because the head of the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) was a completely insane person named James Ferman.

Nunchucks were (are?) illegal in the UK, despite being an incredibly stupid weapon that is more likely to knock you out than whoever you're trying to harm, and Ferman was a huge stickler for arbitrary rules. He's responsible for an enormous amount of media censorship in the UK from the mid 70s to the late 90s - he was the person that blocked The Exorcist from being released on home video (it eventually got released on DVD about three months after he retired).

Ferman's particular hatred of nunchucks extended to how he felt he was "unable to tell the difference between a martial arts weapon and a sausage" in a scene in which Michelangelo uses sausage links to fight bad guys. Ferman stated that the sausages looked like real weapons "to any streetwise 8 year old" and ordered the scene to be heavily edited so as to avoid a "dazzling display of swinging sausages indistinguishable from chainsticks".

Despite this insanity, Ferman was considered to be extremely liberal by Mary Whitehouse, who is basically the UK's version of Phyllis Schlafly.

When Ferman retired, he campaigned to have legislation around hardcore porn severely relaxed, so that he could enjoy his twilight years. He died 3 years after stepping down."

Horror is such a personal subject and topic, its always funny how some things spook the hell out of people and others are just, eh, whatever. Like there is an absolutely poo poo horror film I can't remember the name of at the moment about people getting murdered arbitrarily while vacationing in a rural cabin and since that was a fear I have had since childhood it was unwatchable while the Shining inspired a nostalgic comfort of time in hotels and other resorts (you know, when the axe isn't swinging).

Or put another way, Dr. Strangelove is a good movie but the ending of Fail Safe works much better for me.

I disagree but you're entitled to your opinion and I think you're throwing away a lot of great cinema by singling out The Shining as the only good one.

One of the darkest things I have seen in any video game is the ending of one of the versions of Pokémon X/Y of all things (can’t remember which, I saw a play through). In that game, the villain is an elitist eco-fascist who wants to stop the degradation of the planet by basically killing everyone who is not the 1% (I.e. Team Flare, his organization which you need to play a shitload of money to join) using some ancient civilization‘a technology that was also used to provide immortality. When you defeat him, in one version of the game he simply tries to kill you. In the OTHER he basically goes “OK, I can no longer commit genocide but I still have enough juice in the machine so I can make you guys immortal out of spite. Enjoy hellworld for all eternity, motherfuckers!”, but luckily you escape.

The prospect of being immortal past the collapse of society is probably one of the worst things I can imagine. And they put this in a POKÉMON game.

The problem with the horror genre is that unlike drama or comedy or romance its tools and language all have limited lifespan. All horror movies boil down to the fear of the unknown but as soon as you put it in a movie and a bunch of people see it the unknown becomes known and then it's no longer scary (and eventually reaches the point of parody). Like if you watch Nosferatu now it doesn't move the needle at all but back in 1925 it was terrifying. It's why horror goes through phases like the classic monsters of the 30s, the slasher flicks of the 80s and the torture porn of the 00s. You find what works and you milk it until the audience goes numb and then you find the next thing. So just cause horror films aren't scary any more it doesn't mean they're bad. Nosferatu's still a classic.

Gaius Marius

I think rarity is on to something with that. That said the same tropes that makes horror bad as a genre makes the horror parody genre so incredibly strong. I recently watched both scream the movie and scream queens the tv show and both were excellent.

I like horror a lot and personally I've had positive experiences watching older horror films that still managed to scare me. I feel like the best horror movies maintain scariness regardless of how old they are. In some cases they might even get scarier.

Gaius Marius

I can't articulate my thoughts on horror as a movie genre right now so I'm gonna sleep on it. But having just finished my rewatch of eyes wide shut I'll say the movie really could've used another hour or two. Still a great film but another couple hours would've really elevated it as a creative endeavor
