how do you free hand move a stop motion puppet like that and make the movements consistent? Like in Corpse Bride, are they just guessing with each movement or is there a way to precisely measure each change?

these days with digital cameras you just set your software to overlay the last few frames with semi-transparency so you can compare them. traditional painted animation does the same thing with tracing paper.

in harryhausen's case he couldn't do this of course since it was all on film. he was just a master.

i could imagine that in the heyday of practical effects they might have had other optical aids, like say dropping a sheet of glass between the model and the camera and drawing on it with a grease pencil to mark locations, then pulling it out of the way afterwards. those 1970s-80s special effects houses had some incredible contraptions

Thanks for the info all! I tried to do it a few times in my early 20's, made a few 2 second clips and it was so loving painful I just gave up. First by manipulating a doll and then moving to the camera to click the screenshot button (which was maybe 480p?) on a camcorder, then tried with a dslr but uploading all those photos and doing batch manipulation required either some scripting knowledge or paying for something. oh the good old days.

This is really cool!

you could do it now with just a gopro set to take a picture every so many seconds on the video capture side of things

video editing on the other hand still requires a half decent computer, maybe not so much with 1080 but 4k poo poo still hurts my ryzen7/3070 combo

i rewatched all of this earlier this year with the gf who hadn’t seen it. some of it has dated badly but on the whole it’s such a good show

I never liked it heaps the first time around. not sure why i liked it better the second. oh well

i miss it dearly - we just binged it this year too and gently caress, it's just so drat good. loses a bit of steam near the end but man, just such a nice style of comedy. catching up on B99 right now since it's over soon and just finishing up S4 - still knocking it out the park. what a loving ensemble.

I think when I first saw parks and rec, other than the first season we watched each episode as it came out, and I reckon when you can watch a couple episodes a night or so you can sort of get more into it, where as one per week for a bit of the year it just doesn’t have the same oomph. like if an episode falls flat, just watch another!

we watched this coming up on acid and .. we had a chuckle

people always love to point to the "gently caress" scene from like the fourth episode of the show as a great way to get people into it but I think this one is just a much better encapsulation of the show's feel
