Addressing Variants of Concern: Moderna has four development candidates against SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern, including three which have been administered in a Phase 2/3 clinical trial. Initiation of a clinical cohort with the fourth candidate is planned in the coming weeks. The Company’s strategy is to develop booster vaccines against current variants of concern and against potential future variants of concern.
  • mRNA-1273.351: Variant-specific candidate against the Beta variant
  • mRNA-1273.617: Variant-specific candidate against the Delta variant
  • mRNA-1273.211: Multivalent candidate combining the Beta-specific variant and mRNA-1273

Next-generation vaccine against COVID-19 (mRNA-1283): The Phase 1 study of mRNA-1283 is fully enrolled. mRNA-1283 is a next-generation vaccine candidate against COVID-19 that encodes for the portions of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein critical for neutralization, specifically the Receptor Binding Domain (RBD) and N-terminal Domain (NTD). It is being developed as a potential refrigerator stable mRNA vaccine that will facilitate easier distribution and administration by healthcare providers.

BTW does getting a COVID nucleocapsid antibody test done for a kid require a doctor's referral, or can you just walk into a local urgent care and get it done? Also is this a $40 or >$400 test, or is that just not knowable until the insurer-provider billing process quantum superposition collapses?

I just got an update about my cousin, who I lost track of after he got banned from all family events.

The first thing I learned from my aunt is that he got engaged in January. The second thing I learned is that they both got COVID recently, and his fiancee died of it. She says they just wouldn't stop going to bars, parties, etc. The third thing I learned was that he wants to hold a 'traditional Irish wake' at their favorite bar, which doesn't have outdoor seating.

So, to summarize: his soon-to-be-wife died of COVID due to irresponsible partying, and he wants to hold a event that involves copious amounts of drinking (making masking basically impossible), at a bar, indoors.

Next Gen Moderna (mRNA-1283) is in Phase 1 safety trials:

https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT04813796

More info:

https://bioprocessintl.com/bioprocess-insider/facilities-capacity/moderna-inks-deal-to-build-mrna-facility-in-canada/

quote:

The results from Phase I are expected to be available soon with Meline stating “what we then expect is that indeed, assuming success with the 1283, it would be replacing the original 1273 vaccine [once] we get approval for that.”

While it has not been disclosed what would happen with 1273, mRNA-1283 is expected to be evaluated in further studies for use a booster dose for previously vaccinated individuals.

So if the Phase 2/3 trials go well, they can incorporate it into a booster that doesn't need special refrigeration, including the hybrid flu/RSV/COVID booster

Yeah, it just is. Not liking it won’t change it, nobody has some cheat code that makes it good, these are just the rules of the only game in town. Figure out how to have fun with it or don’t, that’s the only available choice here. The future will be more like this than it will be like the past, it’s wisest to use this time to figure out what that means for you. In all probability, these will turn out to have been relatively easy years compared to the ones ahead. If it’s your intention to be around for the real poo poo, and it should be because this is the only game in town, this is the time to set yourself up to be a slightly more effective human being than you otherwise would be.

That sounds grim, but it really doesn’t need to be. For example, I’ve been gradually and poorly learning a tiny bit of Spanish. I’d be lying if I said I don’t think that will be helpful as the climate falls apart and refugees are pushed north from Central America, but it’s also just kind of nice to sit down and look at how a language works and do something with my brain that I’ve never really done with it before. Plus I fuckin love it down there, and if I somehow ever got a chance to go again, it would be cool to have language skills above a preschool level. This gives me a thing I can do today that makes me happier and smarter today, and also sets me up to be slightly better at something that will be nice to be able to do, no matter what the future holds.

Getting good at cooking is a good one. Don’t stop when you’ve got enough recipes to fill out a week or two, look into different styles from around the world, figure out why people developed the techniques they did, learn how to make something from nothing. Once you think you’re hot poo poo, go vegan for a couple months, learn how to cook without the crutches you’ve been leaning on. This is a crucial ability in any survival scenario, cooks were working before we had civilization and we’ll be there to turn the lights off afterward. More than that, it’s also the kind of thing that can turn a third date into a spouse, or hungry strangers into new friends.

I wish I had a yard, because gardening seems like one of these types of things. It’s very good to be responsible for life and help it thrive. When everything goes to poo poo, you have experience that will help you grow your own food or drugs or textiles. If things turn out okay somehow, you know how to have a lovely garden and have a hobby that makes you go outside and care for things. You can’t lose.

One I really wish I had the means for is woodworking. That poo poo isn’t going anywhere. A person who can make useful or pretty stuff out of a common resource is good in an apocalypse and also at every other point in history. I used to work with a guy who drew his own porn, and I made many jokes about how he’ll be holding all the cards once society breaks down completely, but he also just likes to draw, so he’s happy no matter what.

I don’t need to list examples all day. Find an activity that is in itself sort of pleasant and interesting and that could also help you or others later on, get better at it than you are now, and you’ll at least have successfully passed some time in a way that didn’t make you crazier and more useless.

A very good post, and my comrade, you should try bone carving. Bones are cheap and plentiful from the pet store and all you need are some cheap chisels from the hardware store. As a bonus, if you have cool friends, you can decorate their bones for them after they die. Only uncool people would have a problem with this.

In a sense, that's true. When I got diagnosed with heart failure, I was told that I needed to switch to a low sodium diet.

Fair enough, but what does that look like? The hospital got me a nutritionist that gave me a photocopied list of fruits, vegetables, meats, and nuts which are naturally low in sodium, but when I asked about recipes, I was told that there are a lot of good cook books out there, but that they didn't have any to specifically recommend. Brands to look for for pre-made things like breads or whatever? Read the nutrition labels. We don't have any recommendations. A recommendation for a nutritionist for me to see for more info? Check with your primary care doctor.

I was basically told to make a gigantic change to my life with zero info other than that lovely, photocopied list that I could have put together in five seconds of Googling. I ended up spending a shitload of time researching foods to find out what was actually low sodium (and finding out that the hospital probably shouldn't have been feeding me some of the things that they did) and finding my own nutritionist, but it's super loving lovely to dump a huge lifestyle change on somebody with no real guidance while they're in the middle of dealing with everything else from a major diagnosis like that.
