I never got around to appreciating Kirby that much until I got older, tried to draw my own comics and began to recognize what I was really looking at in his art and the techniques he was using. The guy was a story telling machine and the idea that he drew those pages from top left to bottom right without slip sheeting or doing much in the way of thumbnail sketches blew my loving mind. You can look at an entire book of Jack's without any word balloons at all and know exactly what is happening in the entire story. He made Stan's job infinitely easier. I also really enjoyed looking at his pencils before inks were added. It's just gorgeous to look at. Any aspiring comic book artist (or even movie story boarder) should really take a close look at what he was doing.

Kilmer is good in Heat even though I don't like that film as much as others. I also thought he made a pretty good Bruce Wayne if not a decent Batman, but nobody besides Keaton and Affleck have ever really nailed both parts of that role; same with Superman since Chris Reeve. My favorite Kilmer role, movie and performance was in a little independent movie called Wonderland about porn star John Holmes, his insane drug habit and his role in a cocaine fueled triple homicide that is mostly known from the Alfred Molina scene in Boogie Nights and the subject of a few really good documentaries. Kilmer is fine.

What do you guys make of the recent Sons Of Sam documentary on Netflix? I remember reading Maury Terry's book, The Ultimate Evil, when I was maybe 13 or so and being intrigued by it. Later on, as I was Subjected to Geraldo Rivera and, Satanic Panic and then, later still, delved into the West Memphis Three case and I decided that this was all bullshit but now I'm wondering. Still not sure I buy it and I wouldn't call Berkowitz credible. All this crap is hard to believe but the doc lays out a compelling argument and I no longer thing that Terry is a hack. ANyone watched it?

It was as much about Maury Terry's unhealthy obsession than Son of Sam really. I thought the theory of multiple shooters and the connections to the Carrs was pretty compelling but I don't buy any of the Satanist stuff. The real turning point for me was the prison interview where the dude just completely led Berkowitz and totally hosed up. I've been looking for the full version of it or a transcript but what I saw was leading and feeding 101.

Untold: Crimes and Penalties on Netflix is completely bonkers and more entertaining than anything I've seen in a while. Brief rundown: mob boss buys minor league hockey team, gives it to 17 year old son to run. He turns it into a combination of Slap Shot and WWE.

thanks to this thread, i watched the untold hockey episode, the malice at the palace episode, and that p-funk doc all in the last 24 hours. all good stuff. i didn't have Amazon video subscription, but a Google search under "videos" bright me to a site called "tubi" that let me watch the p-funk doc with ad interruptions (that can be blocked if you use the Brave Browser)

I think it is a few years old but Drunk, Stone, Briliant, Dead, the story of National Lampoon showed up in my Prime feed so I watched it. I was not aware just how influential National Lampoon was. It's basically a comedy line of demarcation between the current and the past. It's worth watching if you don't already know all about it.

This thread is long and old. I’ve been binging some of the crash course history YouTube’s and also listening to the history of rome podcast. I love the serial format of them and was just wondering if there’s any decent history documentaries on p much anything older than the last 100-200 years that delve into a topic or society or civilisation. Preferably ancient history but either way. I can see a ton of movies on Netflix for example but just who knows what is trash or good.

I’ve been going through all the punk and thrash docs on Tubi, there’s some really good ones and some really boring ones. The Descendents doc is super good. The Pennsylvania Hardcore doc is super boring but good for making a list of pa hardcore bands to check out.

"The Filth and the Fury" is a good punk documentary. Also, "Hated" if you have the stomach for it. I seem to remember watching a CBGB doc but can't recall the title or if I'm confusing it with the film starring Alan Rickman

Is there a dedicated “Get Back” thread somewhere where I can gripe about the lovely blurry digital upscaling job? I’ve seen better upscaling on videos from the 1800s than what Peter Jackson apparently has access to.

They do discuss during part 2 that they were using 16mm film because they expected to use the footage for a tv special. But as it kind of morphs into using the footage for a movie they lament that they didn’t use 35mm. So I do kind of wonder what they raw untouched footage looks like.

The worst part of Get Back for me are the long segments that they only have audio for. They put random footage over and the mouths don’t match and they keep cutting to random people milling around.

I’m watching Wild, Wild Country on Netflix at the moment. Pretty freaking awesome documentary of the insane cult antics which abounded in Osho’s purpose built city in Oregon in the 80s - about 6 hours in total, I’m halfway through and it just gets crazier and crazier. Strong recommend
