Quirky personality shooter is the name of the game nowadays. Which I'm down for so long as the quirky personalities are on the titan buddies alongside their serious human companions.

You have a ... source for that? I though it was because of familiarity.

From a dev on Reddit, glutinousriceball

quote:

Yes, we used the RCF engine initially because it ran well on the PS3. (Titanfall 1 was originally going to be for Xbox 360 and PS3.) Back then, making a PS3 game work on a Xbox 360 was easier than the other way round (making a Xbox 360 game work on a PS3). I think the coders really liked that engine, but the tools were a bottleneck, so we switched to Source.

RCF is the Ratchet and Clank engine, lol.

From a 2013 Polygon interview with one of their engineers:

quote:

The ironic thing is that we wanted an engine that would work on PS3, because that’s the riskiest platform in current gen. When Portal 2 came out and it seemed to be a pretty decent PS3 game, that was the point when we decided to go with Source.

Cool!

I can't imagine what the R&C engine tools were like that they looked at source and went "yep, that's so much better tooling"

Especially since Portal 2 is so incredibly far from huge mulitiplayer battles that work at different scales. It's so claustrophobic and graphically simple. Looking back at gameplay footage it obviously worked well, but...

Isn't Battlefield 2042 doing something like this? Each class is a specific character now.

Though I wouldn't call them particularly quirky or even iconic... kinda not even sure why DICE is going down this path.

Have you played the first Titanfall? The AI voices weren't like that. They were mostly different languages (Japanese & Russian were popular iirc) but the Jeeves one who spoke like a butler was really charming :3:

Oh I haven't played Fortnite but Apex isn't really like that. They play the characters up in promotional trailers for events and stuff but in-game? The only thing that I can think of is Octane having the most hilarious running animation that I have ever seen and the game would definitely be worse without it.

Oh, and I think one of the custom animations for Revenant inspecting his scythe has an amusing malfunction where it goes floppy :3: Pathfinder has a really good one too with his boxing gloves if you have them unlocked, they malfunction as well and one pops out on a spring :v:

God drat I forgot about MAG, I used to play that so much. One of countless great studios in Sony's developer graveyard :(

Big Titanfall battles would be awesome however, they just need to not make the maps gigantic like Battlefield and I think they'd definitely need to return to the titan mechanics of the first game rather than TF2 for something like that.

Swiss-cheese design with partially destructible terrain so that Titan fights or enough Pilot munitions can change the map.

Has Not Actually Done Cocaine
I've talked about this before but my thoughts on what Titanfall 3 needs;

1) Titans need at least one of the following; Shields being inherent(rather than having to to either always take the Battery perk or have to steal one before summoning your Titan), and/or they need to be able to automatically recharge from damage like they did in the first game

2) Pilot anti-Titan weapons need a massive nerf, the way they are in 2 is too strong, essentially makes Titans suboptimal to actually use if the enemy team are reasonably good at playing as Pilots(personally I feel that the balance should always somewhat favor the Titan in these encounters, at least if it's 1v1)

3) continuing from the previous point I'd suggest a rebalance in how anti-Titan weapons work, with most of them either being good at damaging Titan shields or Titan armor(like the Thunderbolt would be great against shields but meh against armor while the Archer would be the opposite), also how overall powerful they'd be would be affected by how easy or hard they are to use(like the Archer for example would now be a bit on the mediocre side when it comes to how much damage it does due to how brain dead easy it is to use)

4) Titans continue from 2's system of specific frames and loadouts but some of 1's degree of customization would return as well(like maybe each Titan would now have two or three different main weapons they can choose between and more in the way of various other ways to customize how a given Titan can play, Monarch definitely feels like it was a step in the direction this could go)

5) while I do definitely feel raising the player count is a good idea(larger team sizes makes having a bad teammate or two less game ruining of an experience than it is in 6v6 or smaller team games), I'm not sure the game would keep it's magic if Pilot/Titan counts were at full Battlefield size, I'd probably go with somewhere between 12v12 and 16v16 as the ideal(especially if the AI grunt aspect also got ramped up in scale to match)

Yeah, while I don't mind the trend that Team Fortress 2 started with every character having to be a unique personality but Titanfall is definitely better without it. We're faceless grunts/robots and we're fighting other faceless grunts/robots. It's perfect and let's you just focus on the gameplay. I don't need lore behind every single character model about their quirks, struggles or their preference when it comes to clapping some buns. It's like the try to make the characters more interesting than the gameplay.

Also gotta say high player count titanfall would absolutely suck. The ttk is so low, everyone would just be getting obliterated by someone they had no way of seeing constantly. I wouldn’t mind if the different tactical ability models had more personality either. I don’t really get why everyone is railing against that in this thread right now lol. You can usually just turn character voices down anyway. I like that the cloak guy is wearing a ghillie suit, for example

I'm railing against the 'tudification of everything in videogames. it has nothing to do with distinct character classes in titanfall 2, which I enjoy, and everything to do with how lovely a marketing gimmick the fortnite paradigm is, not to mention how awful it tends to be in terms of artistic cohesion. it's just a sloppy way to present a game when you can't decide on a unifying aesthetic. i don't like funky hip day-glo neon + comedy stylings, it needs to die

SUNKOS

I dunno, some retro futuristic glowing neon paint job for titans would look pretty fuckin' sweet imo. I have a very particular aesthetic in my head however and it's very far removed from Fortnite, but is in keeping with the visual style of the simulation aspects of the game (the neon orange & blue from War Games, for example). What they introduced with the paint jobs in TF2 was really awesome as well, particularly the WW2-styled shark teeth design that looked excellent.

I agree with the people mentioning partially destructible terrain, titan shields and overall design being more like the first game, the excellent map design from the first game and 12v12/16v16 seeming like a good number for players (with increased AI units and bringing back stuff like being able to hack turrets around the map - they should expand on that even more because it's cool).

Stan Taylor posted:

I think those of us that are excited by the prospect are thinking more of the original TF than the sequel, since the original was basically the Burnout of FPS games in many ways and the more chaos, the better  Respawn made incredible maps for the first game and have a solid respawn system (:v:) so I think that they could pull it off.

Then again I'd also like to see the return of burn cards so

Being a Geriatric Millennial, even the thought of playing a character is absurd. I don't want to be Rouge Dragon Six with a cool backstory about his tragic past and amazing character design or whatever. I want to play a faceless soldier person whose only distinction is the weapons loadout I choose. But poo poo like that is even harder to balance and video gamers are a horrible plague that has to minmax everything so classes are now :turianass: characters :turianass: with fixed loadouts so everything fits into a rock-paper-scissors kind of balance.

I really blame Team Fortress 2 for all of this. I remember in '99, on the original Sierra Forums there was some guy posting that the developers had scrapped the game and were ditching the Quake engine and starting over with an in-house engine and going with a cartoonish aesthetic. That was obviously insane as we were all still gushing over the E3 videos of voice-synced soldiers fighting in a modern war setting. We got that person banned for spreading misinformation.

Ah, 1999, one of the golden years for PC gaming where two of the biggest FPS games in history (Unreal Tournament & Quake 3 Arena) introduced a wide and diverse cast of different characters for people to play as, ranging from Xan to various Necris future goths such as Loque (and his notorious 100% accuracy) in UT to a gigantic eyeball which uses arms as legs and a dude zooming round on a hoverboard in Q3A.

:hellyeah:
