Well yes but as someone else said it takes away resources from the core game and I would say also splits the community somewhat.

Why does BR have to be a fad? Its a cool, high stakes mode that for a lot of people can be more exhilarating than plain deathmatch or conquest. I'm looking forward to getting back to good ol' conquest but its nice to have that option too

They already have no single player and more studios working on it. By this logic they should cut TDM, Gun master, and rush because it splits the community away from the core conquest mode.

I'm looking forward to whatever the not-BR Tarkov thing is but the fact that they have not disclosed details this late feels like a red flag.

It’s sounding like Hunt Showdown honestly.

Hunt Showdown has

  • Equipment that is purchased/looted and carried between rounds, that can also be lost
  • Currency system
  • AI Enemies of various difficulties that can killed or stealthed by
  • Being stealthy is hugely rewarded and allows ambushing of players
  • Limited ammunition
  • No forced closing circle or usual BR lameness
  • Huge variety of equipment that adds massive depth to the game while feeling extremely grounded

I am doubtful Battlefield would add all these, some of them are too "hardcore" for the generic audience. Or maybe not.

It also has very high lethality but very low rate of fire weaponry, which can lead to some drawn out firefights that a game full of automatics might not have.

They specifically said in a QA that the tools for a BR in Portal will not exist, at least at launch and he didn't make any kind of commitment on it.

quote:

"So for example, we don't have a spatial editor. So creating something like a battle royale, there are kind of two main components that would need to be there. The first is a very robust matchmaking system. As you know, when you get kicked out, you need to throw people in a pool, rematch, make them in. That's not something we're going to support for the builders to be able to create or manage at launch."

BRs own and there is a lot of flexibility in the genre. We’ve been seeing more small format (instance based) BR’s gain a lot of traction lately. Those are games like Hunt, Tarkov and presumably what Hazard Zone will be. They don’t all have to be large scale 100-150 player modes, but I promise way more people are tired of holding the same angles in CS for literally 20 years or only playing 3 lane maps with minimal verticality in COD for the rest of eternity. They offer a tremendous amount of variability that makes players adapt based on what other players do or where the objectives and spawns are in that particular session.

I personally like them, in almost any size and format because they reward players for aggression and creativity. I also don’t like being completely ruined for having a bad team that feeds kill streaks or one that won’t play objectives so we have no chance of winning. When I do have a team, it will be smaller and easier to manage. I can literally opt out of playing with bad players by putting together a team of friends.

Small scale BRs are also less punishing for newer players usually offering them some amount of measurable progression even if they don’t win. They also don’t tend to have the all or nothing rule set.

BR is not bad. It is just that squeezing an entirely different subgame into the main game costs resources, and even if it is another studio entirely it still costs money budgeted for the main game that gets diverted.

I would go so far as to say adding more and more modes could potentially lead to loosing focus on what kind of game you want to make, and Dice don't seem the greatest at remembering what made the last iteration of BF good and carrying that over into the next.

And if you want to do it properly I would imagine you have to rebalance weapons and do a whole lot of other changes for a BR type experience to work. So essentially you are either maintaining two completely different types of game or one part suffers. And again, this is Dice/EA, not a great track record with "balancing" either.

Anyway, as long as the core modes work decently well, we will all be happy I guess.

This is why I don't want a BF battle royale. I play battlefield games because I want large scale combined arms conquest matches, or for a more focused experience in Rush. Tarkov-esque side mode sounds interesting and I'll probably give it a whirl, especially if it counts towards weapon unlocks and the like, as it's something I can play in the downtime between my bros being online.

"Jesus, did I say that? Or just think it? Was I talking? Did they hear me?"
I’ve played a lot of BR games the last few years, and more often than not, they’re terrible experiences if you’re not playing with friends who won’t disconnect from the server at the first sign of adversity. *cough*Warzone*cough*

When you’ve got a squad of friends and you’re in each others ears coordinating things on the map, it’s a lot of fun, but playing with randos is a totally mixed bag.

I mean, dealing with teammates in Battlefield the last two decades who spawn in vehicles and refuse to move forward out of the spawn zone because they’re utterly terrified of dying in a videogame is also a pain in the rear end, but usually that’s only one or two people on a team of several dozen. Having a gung ho imbecile who wants to play the game their way and no other way, in a squad of 2-4, can ruin the whole experience.

They diverted resources away from multiplayer for over a decade into the lovely and forgettable singleplayer. I couldn't be more excited that they diverted 100% of singleplayer's resources into another multiplayer game mode.

Also I've been playing Hunt: Showdown for over 3 years. The BR style game mode has immense staying power, and if it's good will make Battlefield have even more resources dedicated to it due to the increased player counts.

Interesting thought experiment here: when will Battlefield as we know it die? CoD? Medal of Honor already ate poo poo, but the other two big AAA FPS franchises are evolving to stay current. When will they either stop receiving new releases or evolve past the point at which they’re recognizable?

I’m not sure if Conquest is ever going to get boring as long as it gets shaken up every few years so maybe once we’re all crotchety there won’t be anyone left who remembers what a Battlefield game traditionally was and that’ll be the end of that.

Before conquest we had king of the hill, capture the flag, and team death match. Those modes suck for combined arms gameplay with lots of players on a large map. Conquest was made to facilitate large scale combined arms. If Conquest ever dies, it'll be because something better came about that works well with combined arms.

I don't think Battlefield will die unless a lot of horrible things happen. The fact that there's so many knockoffs and similar games and the series keeps evolving shows it has a ton of life left.

I honestly think part of the running speed is some undocumented part of McKay. The different specialists have different armor levels and McKay being the mobility "class" with the grappling hook and 0 starting armor means he may have some faster movement speed.

The hunt isn't a battle royale. It's twelve players max, for a start, which is barely a battle. Aside from that it has very little in common with BRs like Fortnite, Apex, Pubg, Warzone, etc, which all follow the BR formula with some differences.

And yeah, I'm someone who would enjoy Hunt and thinks BRs are unsatisfying and a lovely game mode that are inexplicably popular.
